Eris she/her Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Hello all. I’m sorry that I post a lot but I’m addicted. But anyway. I am a social support worker and I have been working with this kid (who has ADHD and possibly on the spectrum) in helping him plan and write characters and story elements. He likes to write open world stories but lacks comprehensive understanding other people’s emotions. Thus his character writing isn’t the best. So I promised him I’d bring quotes from Sanderson’s work to show how multilayered the characters are. The reason why is because they both do similar things as in writing expansive worlds and such. However I can’t pinpoint quotes I want to use. Can anyone help? Quotes that I’m looking for is how the character describes themselves and how others perceive them. The characters I’m looking for are Kaladin, Shallen, Jasnah, Renarin, Adolin or Dalinar. Or anyone who has enough quotes like that. I’m trying to stay away from Mistborn because I’m trying to encourage him to read those for observation and learning purposes.
Ixthos Luke/Luke Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 @Eris If you don't mind some of them coming from a villain, there are characters in Warbreaker who are excellent. Not just villains, but Warbreaker is all about the disconnect between how characters see themselves, how others see them, who they are, and who they become. Also, and I know this is the Stormlight section, inside the Cosmere section, but Mat from the Wheel of Time is also great as a character who thinks one thing, says another, and does a third.

I haven't read those yet But I need direct quotes for the exercise as in exerts. I'llcheck the coppermind but last time i looked they didn't have what I wanted in particular
Ixthos Luke/Luke Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 @Eris I don't think I have enough time at the moment to go search through them to find good quotes ... but I can point you to certain scenes in Warbreaker (its been a little too long since I read Wheel of Time to think of good examples of Mat, other than (Wheel of Time spoiler) Spoiler In the Fires of Heaven, Chapters 42 to 44 or 45, when Mat just wants to leave, but ends up saving several people, forming his own army - thanks to skills he never wanted - and kills the enemy commander ... all while wanting nothing to do with any of it. And he formed his army because he couldn't just let some people walk into an ambush. Also, before mentioning Warbreaker spoilers, and trying to make them as non-spoiler as possible, I recommend reading Warbreaker, and making note of any scene where a character is attributed certain characteristics, especially by themselves. You will see them change, or a reveal about the true nature of what they meant. So, as mild a set of spoilers as possible - to the point they are only kind of spoilers for Warbreaker Spoiler Lightsong's attitude towards himself, and his arc. The dynamic and statements Denth makes about himself to Vivenna. Bluefinger's interactions with Siri, and her interactions with her new husband, especially how she initially thinks of him vs later. Vashar's portrayal throughout the novel and what is revealed about what he is actually doing. And, of course, how Vivenna and Siri initially are, and how they change. According to the Coppermind, the key chapters for some of these - and I recommend reading the whole book, its a fun read! - are Chapter 9, 10, and 35. And 6 and 11. There are more, but here are some. 1

THanks friend it is on my list to read but I really do need the storm light ones like I have some but not many because it is easier to teach and explain something you know rather than what you don't know
Xavier Iriarte he/him Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 I don't know if this is what you're looking but here are some from Kaladin, my favourite character ●Sometimes he dreamed like that. Other times, he found it hard to care about anything ●"You go be what you are". What did a man do if he didn't know what he was? Or even what he wanted to be? ●Work, then play. That was enough for them. Not for him ●His mind betrayed him and whispered things that were not true. Distortions. In this state, he could believe Dalinar had lied. He could believe that he secretly wanted him in prison [...] Kaladin could believe that bridge 4 was happy to be rid of him, that they pretended they wanted to be guards just to make him happy. They secretly wanted to go on with their lives, lives they'd enjoy, Without Kaladin spoiling them. These untruths should have seem ridiculous to him. They didn't. I think these quotes reflect a lot of who Kaladin is. If you need any more help just ask! Journey before destination. 3

They are perfect though do you know some of when other people are describing him? Same for when Kaladin describes a another character if Kaladin is your favourite
Xavier Iriarte he/him Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 (edited) These are direct quotes, all of these are said by the narrator in Kaladin's perspective. I'll go look for more! Journey before destination Edited January 5, 2019 by Xavier Iriarte
Eris she/her Posted January 5, 2019 Author Posted January 5, 2019 @Xavier Iriarte Oh please do and thank you
Xavier Iriarte he/him Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 (edited) Here are some more ●"Son," Dallet interrupted [...] "you are going to be fine" "How can you know" "Because, lad. You're in Kaladin Stormblessed's squad" The other soldiers nodded in agreement ■This conversation between Dallet and Cenn (a 15 year old recruit) shows how everyone sees Kaladin as a larger than life figure and infallible ●"With so many wounded on the field, how can we think that the runners will come for us?" "Squadleader Kaladin bribes them" Dallet said. "They usually only carry off lighteyes but [...] the squad leader puts most of his money into bribes" ■Another conversation between Cenn and Dallet that shows how Kaladin deeply cares about the people around him, much more than money ●"I'll have to stay behind," Kaladin said "What?" Moash demanded "Someone will need to'" Kaladin said "If i stay behind i can support the story [...]" "we're not leaving without you" Sigzil said. Many of the others nodded. ■Kaladin offers the bridgemen the oportunity to escape and finally be free with the only cost being Kaladin stays. They refuse. That's how much of an impact he had on them. ●"How do you know," the king asked him, "how to be a hero?" "Your majesty?" Kaladin asked "A hero [...] everyone loves you bridgeman. You saved Dalinar, you fought shardbearers, you came back after falling into the storming chasms! How do you do it? how do you know? ■Even king Elokhar treats him with reverence, everyone knows he is a hero, brave and seemingly always knows what to do ●"Ha!" Lunamor said. Finding a smile on your face, Kaladin Stormblessed, is like finding a lost sphere in your soup. Surpising, yes, but very nice too" ■This speaks to Kaladin's attitude, he is always worried, angry or sad, rarely happy ●Rlain nodded. Kaladin was a good man. For all his faults, he tried more than the rest of them ■Rlain, a parshman, always felt left out, but even he could see Kaladin tried hard to make him feel at home ●"No," Elokhar said. "You'll do what i command. Be extraordinary, Captain. Nothing else will suffice" [...] Those rumors had become a challenge, creating for everyone the notion of a man who was like Kaladin, but at the same time greater than he could ever be. ■Everyone looks up to Kaladin, but sometimes he feels like he can't fulfill the role of "Kaladin Stormblessed" ●He felt good a lot of days. Trouble was, on the bad days, that was hard to remember. At those times, for some reason, he felt like he had always been in darkness, and always would be. Why was it so hard to remember? ■I just love this because it feels so real. When Kaladin gets hit by depression he can only look at the bad things, and focuses only on the negative aspects of the situation. ●After what he's been through, Adolin thought, i wouldn't have expected that anything could faze him. Not even Elhokar's death. ■Kaladin put up a facade, on who is always strong, but deep down he cares about everyone, and he hurts. ●Kaladin is tougher than a wind-tossed boulder, Brightbess, Teft had told her. He survived bridge four, he survived the chasms and he'll survive this ■This further proves my last statement. Everyone believes this facade that Kaladin puts up, even when he doesn't believe in himself, everyone else does ●They weren't supossed to go up there, but sometimes rules didn't seem to apply to Kaladin Stormblessed ■Kaladin is very intimidating, people that know him respect him for who he is, but people that don't know him respect him for how he looks ●Even in a battle with multiple radiants, there was something about the way Kaladin flew, the way he moved ■Even Shallan who is bethroded to Adolin, a very handsome man, recognizes Kaladin as being special, and attractive Sorry it took me so long, i went through all 3 books in my Kindle and this is what i found, hope it helps! I'm hoping for a positive feedback on this method of teaching characterisation
