Max nodded, feeling her hand and tightening his own fingers around it. They had discussed children, only a short while ago. The thought that they had discussed having children, and then this... there was a bitter taste in Max’s mouth.

He burned zinc, feeling it’s metallic warmth inside of him, the Allomantic power flowing through him. But instead of using it, or even enhancing a Riot, he stored it in his Nicrosil-mind. For later. He’d need it.

“That’s good. We’ll have to see where he went. Maybe send a Canton taskforce to meet him.” He looked to Althea. “And a Ghostblood one, if you think you should.” He sighed, taking a bite of the chocolate cake. Work always seemed to invade home life.

She replied and looked at her cake. As much as she loved cake, right now she didn't feel like eating any. And so she stayed where she was, leaned against his side her hand holding his.

"The Ghostbloods will be involved one way or the other. It's my duty."

Max nodded. So, the children of Ghostblood members. Max swallowed his cake. He and Althea had thought that even with high positions in big guilds, they would be able to defend anyone who was threatened because of it.

But this was terrorism. Now any relative of a Ghostblood would feel unsafe. And rightly so, if this Vesuvius continued.

“I wonder if we could pull more guilds into this,” he said. “Killing children is bad enough, doing it against a specific guild is bad, if we convince other guilds they might be next, they might feel obliged to help, especially when they see what he did to the children.”

He paused.

"There's a war between the Diagramists and the Keeper's brewing, PlasmaCore is stiring things up as well. I don't want to spread our remaining forces too thin."

“That’s a good idea,” Max said, leaning back in his chair.

“Diagramists and Keepers. They’re both allies, any sort of conflict between them is not to going to end up good for us.” He sighed tiredly. Today had been a long day.

“And PlasmaCore, well, who knows with them. All I know is that they have an opening party, and parties in general around here tend to break down pretty fast.”

He paused for a second, thinking. “Do you think we could find Vesuvius there?” He shook his head. “No, probably not. He’d be arrested, i imagine.”

Max sighed tiredly and she had to smile at him, despite everything what happened, or the part where she was tired as well. He was here, and sometimes, like she'd done now, she realized that it was enough, that it was everything she needed.

"Why should they arrest him? We never accused him of anything. Which reminds me - I should inform Lusk. It was never really settled if what happened falls under our jurisdiction or not, but he should know."

"Still I'd prefer if we knew something about him, before we stirred up a lot of attention to the matter. Some unknown guy attacked us sounds terrible and I think we should care about how we look, how we are perceived."

“You’re right,” Max said. They hadn’t actually accused him of anything. “Gathering information is probably most important right now.”

 He waited for a moment, tapping his plate idly. “I’m sorry,” he said to Devaan. “This was supposed to be just inviting you to dinner, but things got more serious. I hope this all didn’t ruin your night or anything.”

She answered his glance evenly. If he endagered those she had sworn to protect, she would probably die trying to stop him.

Althea smiled at Max touching her emotions. She liked when he did that, and she knew why he tried to calm them now. The situation was getting complicated. Sitting up she let go of Max hand, changed her bodylanguage and her face to something more formal, official.

"He will pay, you're right we all agree on that. But I won't accept a Ghostblood getting harmed."

She told Devaan calmly, but her voice was firm.

"And no matter what personal reasons you have for wanting to kill him, he threatened my guild. I will be involved in hunting him down. This is a matter of the Ghostbloods. If he's only a criminal I don't care if you kill him, but if he belongs to an organization of some kind, there might be the need for a trial."

Devaan felt calmer, he noticed Max touching on his emotions but quickly dismissed it.

"Let me know how you feel after talking to the families of those children. I'll keep damage down though. The only deaths I cause will be Vesuvius and his allies" He told Althea.

Althea listened to Devaan's words and to her own surprise she was disappointed. He treated her like a child. Did he really think she'd gotten her position by cooking, by playing things nicely? She liked who she had become, but that didn't mean she'd eraaed everything she was. She knew how the parents would react, but the dead were dead. Vesuvius needed to pay, but he needed to do so in a way the living weren't harmed.

"I think you missunderstood."

She told him, her voice still calm, but colder than before.

"I won't let you harm those belonging to my guild. I will protect them. And if murdering Vesuvius and those supporting him should in any way endanger those I count as mine, I will do anything to stop you."

Kill a man and face the consequences, or let politics take over? Things are already tense. This will make things worse.

Max thought about the problem. Diplomacy. He was always bad with diplomacy.

“If this goes wrong the Ghostbloods night not recover from the political backlash,” he said, scooping up another part of his cake. “We’ll see if he’s connected in any guild, and then we’ll put him for trial, which he will lose, and when he does, it’s only a matter of who’ll execute him.”

Max took a bite of the cake again chewing thoughtfully, then swallowing.

“He’s going to die either way. Hell, you can kill him yourself, we just need a trial, which will at maximum be an hour considering how he already confessed to the crime, to not make a political mess out of this.”

He rested his spoon down. His cake was finished.

Althea listened to Max step in, grateful for his support. She wanted for this to work, not end with a situation where she and Devaan opposed each other.  That would leave Max between the front lines, and that easily counted as worst case. He loved Devaan, and screw her pride she would do a lot to see him happy. Everything short of breaking an oath if she was honest with herself.

"A trial." Devaan replied, after a pause and she relaxed a bit.

"Thank you."

She told him gratitude colouring her voice.

“Yeah, everything’s going fine mostly. We had a new batch of operatives coming in, and they’ve been incredibly helpful. Still, there isn’t much use for Canton operations nowadays. Maybe after what happened with your death, tying up loose ends, but not anymore.” He looked out the window, narrowed his eyes.

“Yet. With what’s been happening so far, it’s possible we’ll have more operations take place. I some of our scout teams on watch.”

He lessened his Rioting in response to Devaan, at least on Devaan. Althea didn’t seem to mind and he smiled at her.

Devaan noticed the rioting lessen. That would be enough to ask for.

"Apparently the Keepers and a couple of other guilds are having a bit of an argument over the existence of the Yetis, that combined with the church of the white rose attack might mean we have to become more active. Another war may break out soon." Devaan grimaced for a moment, dredging up old memories.

"The canton is in a position of advantage, compared to many other guilds. We aren't a great guild, we don't have the armies or the force of guilds like the Keepers, TUBA or the Ghostbloods. But that's not what we value at the canton is it? You train your forces well, because sooner or later this powder keg is going to explode and there isn't much we'll be able to do to stop it. Scouts are a good start. Silphio's already there, talking with Returned and some Keepers."

Another War

It seems to be that way.

Are we fighting in it?

We don't have a choice, really. If we don't more people will die than if we do fight in it.

There's also the matter of her.

Althea returned Max smile, leaned back and listened to their conversation. Another war - possible, or PlasmaCore changed the rule fundamentally. In the end the only ones she trusted to be around in another fifty years were the DA, the rest? It was a wonder that the sixteen year peace had happened at all. She would do what she could to protect her guild, but if she managed to steer them savely through the trouble only time would show. She started to ask a question, but then kept quiet, they had time, and the two needed to catch up.

Smiling she leaned against Max side again and wrapped his arm around her. He didn't lessen his rioting on her and now that they had found a solution she gave in, relaxed in the calm. She had enough time to worry about her long list of problems later.

“I’ll get onto it,” Max said. “Ideally the war never happens at all. Both the Keepers and Diagramists are allies, hopefully we can make a compromise between them.” Like how Max had made a compromise between Devaan and Althea. “If everything goes well, there will be no need for a war, but it breaks loose anyway the Canton will be prepared and ready. We might even have to get some more evacuation centres up.”

He saw Devaan grimace at the talk of war and Max had to wonder if that was because of Hellbent, or other reasons. Max hadn’t seen much impact of the Seven Day War on Devaan, though he did sometimes have fleeting memories following it. With Mara, scared of the Monster. It had been years since he’d realised the Monster had just been a drunken Devaan. And now, was there still trauma?

“So, ideally no war,” Max repeated. He felt Althea wrap his arm around her and he leaned into it as well. She seemed happy for the time being, and that counted as a success.
