"So where do you live right now? In the city, or outside? If it's close you could come by now and then and eat with us. I promise, I'll be better prepared than this time."

"I live in the city, so I'd love to stop by more often, I'll be sure to let one of you two know whenever I leave town or get back, I suspect I won't stay in alley city for the majority of my time."

What's that smell?

It's food.

No, idiot. That smell coming from upstairs

I don't know Hellbent. I'm not the one with heightened awareness and senses right now

It smells a little like blood

I don't think that's any of our business.

We should check it out

We should stay here and eat dinner.

Devaan pointedly ignored the rest of Hellbent's urging to do something, and continued the conversation. Still eating his meal.

"So Althea, tell me a little bit about yourself, history wise. I'm curious"

Althea made sure she kept her smile. Althea, why had he stopped calling her Thea. She had messed it up, somehow somewhere along the lines. Had it been too much to invite him again? She had no idea. She had thought it went well, but obviously she had been wrong. That meant, no personal questions, maybe?

What did I do wrong?

She asked Max and when she replied she made sure to keep her voice friendly. She'd stopped fooling Max a long time ago, but Devaan didn't know her, and she was good at hiding what she really felt. Hopefully he would buy the act.

"Originally I'm from Roshar. But I grew up in the Alleyverse, never knew my parents. Max and I wanted to go there sometime, as I'd like to see the world where I was born."

"I joined the Ghostbloods as a teen, worked in the labs for years, climbed up through the ranks and here I am. I spent a lot of time studying investiture."

Nothing, dear, Max said, hearing Althea tell her past, observed what she left out. You shouldn’t think so much about this. Relaaaax, he said soothingly.

“Agreed,” Max said. “I know we went to the Steamwater when I was a kid, me and Mara and the others, but we were thinking of an expedition around the planets one day,” Max gestured vaguely to denote travelling, and smiled. “I’ve never been to Nalthis, so I can’t wait for that.”

"You haven't?" Devaan asked in surprise

"I'll let you two know next time I'll be worldhopping if you want to tag along"

A small note is slid under the front door, accompanied by a loud knock.

"I'll grab that" Devaan told the two. He opened the door, no one was outside.

He picked up the note. It read:

Devaan. Vesuvius blew up the children. You better make good on your threat.

Devaan froze. Shocked.

He actually did it.

We'll kill him for it.

We sure as hell will.

Devaan pocketed the note and sat back down.

"It was just a message to me, that's all" He told Max & Althea

"When you go to Nalthis, Hallandren is an exotic place. The returned are really interesting, but aren't used to total worship."

Althea narrowed her eyes at him, before she remembered to stay friendly. Just a note for him? At their place, which he had admitted that it was hard to find? So either that note had been for her or Max, or he had told an unknown amount of people where they lived. Both options were sitting heavy like a stone in her stomach.

"Sure. If it fits, we'll gladly come with you."

She replied and felt her hand tighten around her fork. Relax, she repeated Max words, and then looked down at her plate. Max was sure this was Devaan, she trusted Max. Relax, stay calm. Carefully she checked her emotions, her feelings. Nothing seemed off, but then she'd been tricked before. Suddenly she was glad that he'd declined to stay here, that he would travel a lot. She was probably too suspicious, but that was what had kept her alive for years. And when someone who was an almost stranger to her, started having notes delivered to her place and answered the door without giving her a chance to react - it set her internal alarms off. Especially here, at their place.

Her foot softly touched Max shin, she hoped he would understand that he should take the conversation over. She started going through every conversation they had so far, sorted through facts, mentally creating a list of things he knew, how he might harm them. She looked for clues to show if it was a stupic coincidence, or if she had missed something, if the part about him being something like Max father had blinded her to other facts.

He shrugged. "Yeah, I guess you're right." As he said this, Solstice woke up, and promptly started crying.

He picked her up, and his grin spread. "As long as nothing happens to you, or her, I'll be happy."

Althea paused and touched Max’s shin lightly. She seemed worried about something? Max felt a bit guilty, he was enjoying Devaan’s visit and meanwhile she was worrying.

“How did whoever sent that note know you were here?” Max asked, taking a bite of the lasagna. It was pretty good, it reminded Max of when he and Mara had snuck out once to eat at a inn instead of at the training grounds.

Mara. Max sighed.

"They've been tailing me for three nights now" Devaan said absently

"I know who the messenger works for. They have no intentions of harming anyone. Essentially just checking up on me from time to time."

Devaan finished his lasagna and sighed.

"Thank you so much, that was amazing"

Althea thought about his words. Trust him? Could she do that? Could she trust him, just because Max did? She looked at Max who was enjoying himself, then at Devaan. The list of people she trusted was short, only few people associated with her without a second thought and as she knew that, she kept her mask, kept them away. It was easier safer. Her fingers touched Brashen and she looked back, at the last years, at who she had been. She took her time, realized that it was about more than only staying Righthand or not. It was about her life and which path she wanted to take, about her destination.

Her eyes rested on Devaan and she realized he hadn't flinched once at their colour, at her hair, instead he'd told her she was a good match. He'd been friendly from the first second, and she had been so afraid to mess it up, had hidden behind her suspicions and masks. Had looked for clues, for lists, for something to hold on. But this wasn't about a list or an argument. This was about her family.

"I'd like you to be a part of this."

She told him slowly, making a decision. It wasn't logical, but it felt right.

"To come by now and then, when you are around and have the time. If we have children to get to know them."

"I never had anything resembling a family before Max, so I can't promise that I know what to do, but still I'd like you to know that here is a place for you."

"If you want to, of course."

She added hastily and looked at Max for confirmation.

Here we go

Flashes of memories flooded Devaan. From lifetimes ago.

Sheonar? The hell am I experiencing

A woman, lying next to Devaan, curled up with a book, being lit by weak gaslight

That same woman, now older, a wedding ring on her finger.

Devaan at a graveside, piling in the last of the dirt.

DAMMIT DEVAAN. SNAP OUT OF IT.

Another woman. Hundreds of years later, giving birth to a child.

Devaan dropping off the child at a lord's manor.

Devaan at a graveside, piling in the last of the dirt.

You owe me for this Sheonar.

Hellbent briefly took control and smiled at the two of them.

"I'd love that"

How long until I'll have to bury them too?

Are you really this broken? Pull yourself together.

Devaan's mind went silent for a time.

Thank you. You pulled me out of there.

You owe me.

I'm aware.

Devaan resumed control, pushing down the memories.

"You mentioned kids? Got any plans?" He joked, laughing as Max turned a soft shade of red.
"I'm just messing around. But of course, I'll be sure to stop by more often"

Max’s smile brightened and he put a hand on her shoulder. The way she said it, it seemed she’d made a decision, to trust Devaan. It was a lot to ask of her, to trust someone she’d met only for a short while, but Max was glad she trusted him, trusted Devaan. He tightened his grip a little, affectionately, and let go.

“I agree,” Max said, almost finishing his lasagna. “And stopping by would be great.” He noticed Devaan had meant the children topic as a joke and so didn’t answer, letting Devaan laugh at his little blush and laughing himself.

Althea felt Max place a hand on her shoulder affectionately and smiled at him happily. Maybe she hadn't messed this up. As he only laughed at Devaan's comment regarding children, she didn't answer as well, and filed it away as  some joke that was lost on her. She hastened a bit with her lasagna, as both of them were more or less finished and she had obviously spent more time thinking and worrying than eating.

"What about some dessert?"

"Dessert sounds amazing" Devaan told althea

"But not if it requires too much work" He hastily added. Althea seemed to be more relaxed around him now, which is good.

Seriously Devaan we should check out that smell of blood

“Nonsense,” Max said, standing up. “It won’t be much work at all.” He walked and collected his and Devaan’s plates, as it seemed Althea was still eating, and placed them in the sink.

“Do we still have some cake in the fridge, Thea?” He asked.

Althea finished eating and followed him into the kitchen, taking the empty roasting pan with her. She grinned at Max.

"You know me. What do you think?"

She placed the dirty dishes into the sink and fetched three new plates and forks.

"There should be some icecream as well."

The Mailman hurriedly walked to the door up to the front door, I am so late, he thought before knocking, Please be here, please be here.

"Hello," he shouted, "I'm looking for someone named Althea, is she here?"

Ambrosia shook her head. "Sorry, Walker, Melody, I'm going to be gone for a little while."

She turned, walking up the stairs, then approached Silas. A spike of fear went through her, and she laid her hand on his shoulder. "Silas, honey?" Her voice was wobbly, betraying some of the fear, but not the full terror that she had within her. "What's wrong?"

Max nodded, taking out a small chocolate cake from the fridge and carrying to the center of the dining table. He brought a knife as well, to cut it into slices with.

“How’s... Hellbent?” Max asked Devaan. “You’ve got him permanently in your head, right, that must be terrible.”
