"If you're talking about dragging people," Tena said seriously to Zaphoid. "I happen to be an expert. If only because of my experience on the streets. Gangleaders become professionals at kicking people's teeth out as well, so I'm open for that, too.

"That sounds complicated," Tena continued to Mace, "but I'm reasonably sure you're the smart one, so you can figure it out."

Ah, sorry

As Lusk was pulled away he regan conciousness. I'm... out. I'm out!

He needed to do something. Fast.

Escaling the people holding him he ran for the stepping platforms. Age his body to its most athletic, age 30, he jumped from platform to platform. As he went on the second last one it collapsed beneath him, but he grabbed on the last one and Luke dim self up. Looking at the rope ahead, Lusk took a step back before charging and jumping at the rope. As soon he held onto it he began changing age., becoming young to be more light and becoming his depressed obese self to gain momentum. Once he got enough momentum he let go, making his body 6 years old to be as light as could, sailing over the wall.

Next were monkey bars. Lusk cursed. He didn't know how to do monkey bars. Luckily, his schoolboy self did. Using Atium Feruchemy to age to 12, he hopped on and began going through the monkey bars, occasionally making himself older in case he couldn't reach some.

Last but not least. Another wall. Throwing a harmonium cube up onto the wall, Lusk aged to a kid, reducing his weight. It was a Lurcher cube, and pulling Lusk by his knife, was able to get him over the wall. "Ta da." He said.

The obstacle course was fun, I wanted to do it. Feel free to still reject him though.

Tena sat down on the grass of the Canton of Combat, and pulled her laptop out her pack, setting it on her lap. She typed in her password, then waited for the homescreen to appear. When it did, she clicked on an Internet browser at random (Alleyweb was one of her favorites) and went to the Alleyzon website. She looked up Tia cards, then ordered three to her house.

Huh, Zaphoid thought as the unconscious man jumped up andcleared the obstacle course in a matter of seconds by using a clever combination of Feruchemy and harmonium cubes. I'll have to reconsider.

Zaphoid called up the last aspirant, Shifting Shadows.

"I believe you're the last person, right?"

What race is Shifty anyway?

Human.

Shifty smiled. Then he ran. He jumped from platform to platform, snarling ferally. Then he soulcast, making a rope. HE swugn across the monkey bars, skipping them. He looked up at the wall. Smiling, he climbed. Within twenty seconds, he had completed the course. "So. Am I hired?"

Lusk blinked. That was fast. Hastily he youngened his psychology back to 20 seconds prior, where he wasn’t embarrassed at being outdone by someone named Shifty.

Ah, that’s better, he thought.

Silas put on a fake sad face.

"Now now, I exist too. Can I use suit for the course?"

I did the math and the suit+Silas+Dakhor stuff-what would be the usual weight of Shardplate= about 1.79 Shardplate strength enhancements.

Pry had no idea why she thought entering unknown property was a good idea. But she did it anyways and found a bunch of people in front of an obstacle course that looked physically impossible for a ferring of her sort. Being an Acute, however, she ignored that fact and walked over to some of the people. She also didn't bother to ask what was going on since that would make her seem more out of place than she already was. Pry really had no idea of what she was doing there.

Shifting Shadows was growing impatient. "Can either someone go, or do I have to break your rusting necks and do it myself!"

Works for me.

Shifty walked out, following the alpha. "I will await at the original location." He smiled, then howled, sprinting on all fours away.

No problem. I looked through the thread and it wouldn't have quite worked anyways.

Pry wandered off. These people were strange, even for her.

As Tena sat typing on her laptop, she looked up and saw a certain tall figure approaching the group of employees-to-be. She slapped the laptop closed, then carefully set it in her backpack and slung the pack on, standing up. She crossed her arms and glared at her grandfather as he approached.

Lenare in no way looked like a grandfather, save for the old, wise look in his eyes. He appeared to be in his early twenties, black hair unmarred by gray and skin mostly lacking wrinkles. He was lean and pretty tall, with long arms and high cheekbones that gave him the impression of being even taller. There was a new addition to his face: the upper left side was covered in dark gray fur, one of his eyes was circular and yellow with no whites visible, and, most noticeably,he had an upright wolf ear in the place of his normal left ear.

Once he was about ten feet away, Tena said, "You got a Bestarin Aether."

"Yes, I did," he said, his voice a slightly scratchy baritone. "My collection is almost complete, but I'm missing Sand Mastery and an Aviar."

"Odd," Tena said, "how one of the easiest Investitures to get, an Aviar, is one of the last you get."

"I'm probably not going to be able to get Sand Mastery, as I think it's a genetic ability, and my spren has forbidden me to spike it out of one of them." That was a lie. Lenare hated harming people, and wouldn't spike someone if his life depended on it.

"Remind me, how did you get Selish Investiture?"

"I had a Ketan master teach it to me. Dahkor is... not an option, and I'm not Aonic." Before Tena could ask him something else, he added, "I heard you adopted a kid."

"He's not a kid anymore, and he's right there." Tena pointed at Silas, then said to her son, "This is your great-grandfather, Silas. Grandfather, this is Silas."

Lenare smiled at his great-grandson. This is not exactly where I thought I’d be a thousand years ago, shaking hands with my great-grandson, happy. His early years had been spent Worldhopping to avoid the being made into a Steel Inquisitor, going to Roshar first and meeting his spren. Cici sat on his shoulder, wearing a business-like pantsuit and looking at Silas balefully, her expression unreadable.

Oh, don’t tell me you think you think he’s a spy or something, Lenare thought to her.

He doesn’t look right, Lenny, she told him warningly.

You said the same thing about Kezeras when you met her. Anyway, which one of us is the logic-spren?

I am not a logic-spren! She paused. Okay, maybe I am a logic-spren. But my judgement stands. He was raised by that crazy granddaughter of yours.

She is not crazy. The granddaughter in question stood with her hands on her hips, lips pursed with a decidedly-not-pleased expression on her face. She was so serious, always oppressing her emotions. But Lenare knew her well, and saw the way she was glancing at the tall half-Koloss half-Terris man standing nearby. Oh, child, Lenare thought. He’s too self-centered for you. It was obviously from the man’s posture that that was true.

She’s been crazy about this one for a while, Cici observed. Coming from her, that had to mean at least ten years, since she’d been bonded with Lenare for over a thousand years.

Yes, she has. But things were brewing of late. Something would happen soon, Lenare was sure of it. Many powerful people were going to be brought to their knees by what would happen soon, and Lenare suspected many would bite the dust by the time that was over. And this man, Mace, was a Fullborn. He’d be dead soon.

“Not long for this world,” he muttered unconsciously as he looked at Mace.

***

Tena was mortified. Was Lenare saying that Mace was going to die? She shivered. Get over yourself, he doesn’t care. It was clear. It was true. She just had to convince herself to stop caring about people so much. Transfer that energy to something important. Or take a break. Think about things.

“Sorry, everyone,” she said, surprising herself. “I’m going to go home. Bye.” Even Lenare looked surprised, and he was over a thousand years old. “Bye,” she repeated.

Then, she waved to Silas, Lenare, and Mace, at that last her heart fluttered. That was annoying. She winced, and dropped a coin, Steelpushing on it and sending herself flying in the direction of her house. Many plates of metal were set on the tops of houses as a highway for Steelpushers, and she used those until she landed on the balcony of her house.

Mace wandered aimlessly, waiting for everyone else to complete their trials. He found himself walking along a beaten dirt path that headed towards a small reflecting pool. He glanced over his shoulder to check that he could still see the rest of the group.

When he looked back, a young man was standing in his way. “Hey, Mace! How you doing?” the man cheerfully exclaimed.

“Grole,” Mace responded coldly, squeezing his hand into a fist.

“You remember me!” Grole grinned, exposing his two rows of perfectly whited teeth. “It’s been so long. How are the-”

Mace cut him off. “Why are you here?” he asked curtly.

Grole gestured to the large crate resting by his feet. Mace was sure it had not been there before. “Time to fill these. But first…” He handed Mace a vial of grey liquid.

Mace checked the label, popped the lid, and drank its contents in one gulp. “He came through?”

Nervously, Grole ran his fingers through his hair, brushing it backwards. He started to say something, but Mace cut him off again.

“Yes, I know, slow moat.” Grole nodded appreciatively as Mace furrowed his brow. He burned the bendalloy and cadmium Grole had given him, creating a small speed bubble around them, and a larger slow bubble around that. Anyone approaching them would get stuck in the invisible ‘moat’.

He noticed Grole begin to speed up, so he imitated him, tapping steel as well. The shorter their meeting was, the better. Mace also swallowed one of his goldminds, preparing for the task at hand.

Grole opened the crate, revealing dozens of freshly forged goldminds. His hands were shaking as he pulled the first three out and handed them to Mace.

“Klasten stole this gold from that building. Why are we doing this here?” he asked.

Mace put the goldminds on and began compounding the metalmind he had swallowed. “Let’s just get this over with,” he answered. When he noticed the cut on his leg heal, he began storing the excess health he was creating in the new goldminds.

He held out his hand and Grole passed him another one. “Are you storing identity?”

Mace rolled his eyes. “Obviously. This one’s good for more. Give me another three.”

They fell into a routine. Mace would swallow one of the goldminds he had recently filled, then compound it to fill a few others. Shortly, dozens of the gumball sized goldminds lay littered across the ground.

“That’s it,” Grole finally said. Mace nodded, and the two of them quickly placed them all back in the crate. Mace then pounded the lid back in place.

“One more thing,” Grole said. There was a note. He passed a piece of paper to Mace.

The older man scanned it, then nodded.

“Time to go,” he said.

“Yeah, I guess so. It’s been fun working with you, Mace. Sure you don’t want to come to the exc-” Grole trailed off as Mace glared at him.

“Tap all the speed you’ve got,” Mace ordered. “Get to the vault as fast as you possibly can. If anyone comes within a mile of you, use a Tia. When you’re done, come back to me. Unfortunately, I may still have need of your services. Now go.”

Mace dropped the bubbles. Reluctantly, Grole picked up the box, shot Mace a wink, and started running back the way he had come. He was out of sight in seconds.

Sighing, Mace stopped tapping steel. Now moving at normal speed, he continued his walk as if nothing had happened. As he did, he slowly ripped the note into small pieces, then threw them in the pond.

It appears I have work to do, he thought as he paced. There are new forces at play in the world.

Okay, bye

Zaphoid cleared his throat and called out to the person wearing a suit of glowing armor. "Hey, what're you doing there just standing? Get out!" Zaphoid realized that his manners were a bit brutish, but did not rectify himself.

"Okay everyone, testing is over! I'll send a message to you tomorrow and you'll see if you're taken. See you guys later!"

And with that, Zaphoid pushed himself away from the crowd, directly on top of his shack. He wanted to draw more plans.
