Jruesch2 he/him Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Recently, having stated that Harmony is probably more powerful than any other Shard, it got me wondering. At the shattering of Adonalsium, did all the different Shards receive the same amount of power? Since shattering of Shards is possible, I wonder if that means they were weakened from Investing too heavily, or if they were simply weaker from the beginning. ... Thoughts? 1
+Invocation Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Quote Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] For Adonalsium to create the universe, therefore he must have infinite power to create an infinitely sized universe. Therefore, infinity divided by sixteen is equal to infinity. Therefore, why don't the Shards have infinite power, which they clearly don't, because they can be killed? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] The power can't be killed. The entity controlling the power can. Infinite power existing and being able to access the infinite power are different things, and a finite mind, even added to a very powerful sense of power, isn't necessarily able to tap all of that. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] What about Ruin and Preservation in Well of Ascension? We hear about Ruin using some of its power. Therefore, it must not have infinite power, because if you minus something from infinity, it's still infinity... Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] So, infinite power is changing forms. It's not going anywhere, right? So, the Investiture, the power, is becoming energy, which is doing work, which is being released back into the system. Nothing's growing or shrinking. It is simply changing forms, and potential energy is becoming kinetic. source They're all equal tiny infinities of power deriving from Adonalsium's large infinity of power. 2
Steel Inquisitive he/him Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Here's a WoB on the subject: Quote Sweetness Just after the Shattering (but before they started created humans or something), did all Shards have roughly the same amount of raw power? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Good question. The question leaves a bit of wiggle room, but I do believe that the shards were identical in power at first. Some shards got WAY "weaker" (since they are all infinite they don't actually get weaker.... They just have less power at that moment) seeing as some of them went and made a planet... While others that kept their power away from accidental investing have more power at their disposal.
