Differences between Sliver and Vessel [Era 1 Mistborn Spoilers]

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi,

1st at all, sorry for my bad english.

[Era 1 Mistborn Spoilers]

I have a question, what is the difference between Sliver and Vessel? in Coppermind says that the two is someone that have and/or use the power of a shard, but I just read this in Coppermind

"Vin is a Sliver of Preservation on account of holding Preservation briefly. She was not a Sliver after using the Well of Ascension"

Maybe Vessel is when someone becomes a part of the Shard and Sliver when you have the power and can use it? as Vin did when arrived on WoA. I read that a Vessel must imbused with Shard's power. And Vin became a Vessel at the end of Heroe of Ages, right?

Thanks!

A Vessel is the person who is actually holding a shard (for example, Ati, Leras, Vin at the end of HoA)

A Sliver is somebody who held a large part of a shard (hard to say how much exactly is required), and let go of it.

The Lord Ruler was a Sliver, as he held the power at the Well and used it. Vin didn't become a Sliver at the Well because she didn't really hold it, and just realesed it. If she would have used it, she would have become a Sliver as well.

Also, if you're a Vessel (current Shardholder) and you let go of the power you become a Sliver as well.

Int he case of Slivers, holding any significant portion of Investiture warps the Spiritweb of the Holder such that when it is released there remains permanent stretching, which causes weird effects.  It does not have to be that you held literally all of a Shard (since Rashek never actually took a shard from Leras or Ati) but you do hold enough Investiture to cause the warping.

Questioner (paraphrased)

What kind of changes do Slivers go through after letting go of a Shard's power?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

It leaves them, imagine it like a balloon that has been deflated.

Questioner (paraphrased)

Okay, so would Rashek still have had powers?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

He would have had some residual effects. But it also works the soul in weird ways, like a balloon that has been deflated.

Vin came in contact with the power of Preservation at the Well of Ascension, but did not use the power, just released it. So no warping effects, not a sliver.

Later Vin did ascend to the shard of Preservation, making her a Vessel.

After killing Ruin and herself, Vin descended from the shard of Preservation. Her time holding Preservation, however short, was enough to permanently warp her soul, making her a sliver.

As indicated by Kelsier, Vin having held the power of a divinity could have chosen to stay as a cognitive shadow. This was due to the residual warping in her soul, which makes her a sliver.
