+Lewis Nethur He/Him Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 It has been bothering me lately that the singers, who are beings with natural spren bonds and are naturally closer to the CR than humans, don't hear the screams of dead shardblades when picking them up or summoning them. Do we have an explanation for why only Radiants and proto-radiants hear the screams? It seems to me that anyone bonded to a spren or otherwise partially able to see into the CR should be subject to the screams when wielding a dead shardblade but this is apparently just not so.
Jace21 he/him Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 I don't think we have any hard and fast proof, but I can talk you through my reasoning: 1. I don't think the closeness to or ability to see into the cognitive realm makes any difference. If it was that simple, Adolin would have heard his blade screaming when he was in Shadesmar and he didn't. 2. Singers bond with spren in their gemhearts to control their form. This doesn't seem to overly affect their interactions with other spren. The bond with a blade is completely different, relying on the more Spiritual bond between blade and wielder, completely unrelated to Listener forms. Since the two bonds work on different mechanics I doubt the one would change the other. I DO think that Eshonai should have heard screaming though, I am just not sure if she was close enough to Radiancy before she bonded the Voidspren.

He did: Quote "Smart," Adolin said. H put his hand to the side to summon his own Shardblade. The woman with the scratched eyes stretched her head toward him in an unnatural way, then screeched with a long, piercing howl. 1
Calderis he/him Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 @hwiles The listener bonds are not the same thing. It is specifically the Nahel bond that causes the screams. Singer forms don't function in the same way, and so don't cause the partial awakening that a Radiants touch does. Quote Questioner Why does the Shardbearer-- when they are dueling with Adolin and Renarin-- Why does the Shardbearer freak out when Kaladin grabs the sword? The <Shardbearer> like... He screams, and he's like, "I didn't kill you", and ran away. Brandon Sanderson Yes. Questioner Why does he do that? Brandon Sanderson Because when Kaladin was there, and they were touching it, they actually heard the spren that was inside of it. Right? Because when an-- Questioner So it wasn't Syl that he heard, it was the sword. Brandon Sanderson It was the sword's spren... that Kaladin was touching it. When the Knight Radiant touches it-- You can see when other Knights Radiant pick up swords, they can hear the screaming. source I think it's kind of a resonance with the same type of bond that killed them in the first place.

Surgebinders who wield Shardblades in the Physical Realm can hear the screams whenever they touch the Blade, not just when they try to summon it. 2
CrazyRioter she/her Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Well I think they scream when they are summoned or in the process of being summoned but aren't screaming when unsummoned in Shadesmar.
