BitBitio
A thought recently came to me. It has been mentioned that of all of the current cosmere stuff, Sixth of the Dusk is the latest, chronologically, in-world. The Ones Above are theorized to be spacefaring Scadrians from MB Era 4. They appear connected. Of the Aviar powers we've seen, they seem remarkably similar to Allomantic abilities. Aviar that show your death are similar to both atium and electrum, whilst Aviar that shield your mind are reminiscent of copper. There are predators like nightmaws that have an ability similar to that of bronze. Basically, that parasite over at Patji's eye is animalian Allomancy. You eat it, you gain Allomantic powers that are similar to human ones. This seems plausible, but do you fine folks see any holes in this?
RShara
There're a few new WoBs about this. Basically, Mistborn and Stormlight's magic systems all touch on many aspects of the Cosmere, they kind of encompass a wide range of the possible magics, so you're going to find a lot of similarities between either of those systems and many of the other magics. But it's not the same, and people eating the parasites aren't going to grant humans any powers. Quote Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] You've talked about some of the correlation between Aviar abilities and Allomantic abilities. Are there any Aviar abilities that are not related to Allomancy, or what are some other abilities that we might see? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] I'll RAFO that, mostly because I want to be free to pick and choose from my list as I canonize them. A lot of Aviar abilities are Cognitive type stuff, just from the way I built them so I can separate the magics. The whole Seeker/coppercloud thing, a lot of Aviar abilities are going to be riffs on that, or they're going to be riffs on glimpsing the Spiritual a little bit. And you see a lot of that in Allomancy. There are abilities that they have that you won't see in Allomancy. The trick is Allomany is so broad. I built the main magic systems to be able to get a little bit of everything. You see the same thing in Stormlight. So seeing Aviar abilities that you haven't seen some version of it in Mistborn or Stormlight, it's going to be... Mistborn and Stormlight touch on all different parts of the magic system on purpose. But I think you will eventually see some that don't. But they're all going to work on the Cosmere magic, so you can say they're all related. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Where might we have see them? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Aviar are known in the Cosmere but are very, very rare. But as you move forward in the future, perhaps you'll see them more often. source Quote Podman36 [PENDING REVIEW] You said before that if a human ate an Aviar worm, it would not doing anything, right? Someone's tried that? What would happen if a baby...? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Still wouldn't work. The gut flora is too different. And they're not part of the symbiotic life cycle there. That system has evolved to the symbiosis that it has, and humans are too new to trying to make that work. Humans are not new on the planet, but they are not part of that system. Podman36 [PENDING REVIEW] Could they be trained into it? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Training wouldn't work Podman36 [PENDING REVIEW] Not like training, but through generations. Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Through generations, that would be theoretically possible. source
PrinceDusty
Yay that first WoB was mine :P I’m actually working on a huge theory right now on both the fundamental laws of investiture in magic systems - and by extent the relationship of Aviar abilities to Allomancy. It’s killing me but if all goes well it should be up sometime next week. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on it, @BitBitio! There’s quite a few other WoBs as well, actually; this one here I use often because it’s just nice and clear: Quote Questioner Sak, Dusk's non-native Aviar. That ability is very, very similar to Allomantic electrum. Brandon Sanderson It is! Questioner And his other Aviar is very, very similar to Allomantic copper. Brandon Sanderson It is. Questioner Is there a connection between those two, deeper? Or is it-- Brandon Sanderson will RAFO that. Let's just say it is an intentional reference, but I'm not going to say whether it's a direct connection to Scadrial magic systems or more that fundamental rules of magics can reproduce one another. We have seen multiple instances of Lightweaving, so-- It's one of those two... That at least narrows it down for you. Brandon gives us the two options but mentioning “multiple instances of lightweaving” very clearly implies that it’s the second. Stuff like that about the fundamental laws of investiture replicating and/or mimicking itself in different magic systems is what you’ll see in my first Theory next week for my 100th post.
