Maffu17 he/him
How many people have read got into Brandon, specifically the Stormlight Archive on your personal recommendation? I have only 5 so far, but I think the Stormlight Archive might be cursed: The first person who read it on my recommendation was a colleague who left my work to become an Architect. The second person left to back into education. The third emigrated to Australia. The fourth was an online gamer friend who had a life crisis and hasn't been back on his Steam account for over 500 days. The fifth was a female colleague who has also left work. I'm currently trying to get my 2 new gamer friends to read the WoK as they're both big fans of fantasy but they are resisting me, and with the curse in effect i'm not sure I should try too hard lest they fall into the sky to be lost forever. Anyway, was just wondering how many fans have been kickstarted by fellow 17thShard members>( and if the curse is striking anyone else?)
traceria she/her
I don't believe anyone I know has been cursed yet (let's hope they never are!), but here's my list: - My husband, who I first got to read Mistborn followed by Warbreaker and then finally WoK. He's still listening to the audiobook of WoR now. - My brother. He and I tend to pass along good reading recommendations, but it was me who first got him into Brandon Sanderson and WoK. He also read Mistborn, but I can't remember if it was before or after WoK. He also read all the WoT books, so obviously read the ones Sanderson wrote. - Two out-of-state friends who are still both in good health. One read WoK first and the other read Mistborn, Alcatraz and The Rithmatist before finally committing to WoK. She's still working on WoR now. - Another friend has WoK in her queue to read (she's re-reading all the Dresden novels before the May release of the next one) but has also read at least Mistborn. So I guess I can take credit for getting them all into Sanderson's earlier books first, for the most part. It appears the only one to read WoK first was my friend out in Minnesota! I mailed her my book to read. Edited April 11, 2014 by traceria
Maffu17 he/him
You get an upvote for spreading the word so diligently traceria. The people I know are very stubborn about recommendations and prefer to find things on their own, which can be frustrating as I have to resist blurting out all the cool stuff and feed them titbits surreptitiously. Maybe it's not a curse, afterall they mostly went on to bigger and better things, maybe Sanderson was the spur that pushed them onwards, Kaladin's determination or Jasnah's confidence and certainty. Curse or boon i'll never stop telling everyone about him, nevar!
kaellok he/him
Most of my friends have very long to-read lists already, without dumping a 1000 page novel on them, so it's been slow going. I've been sneakily tricking them into reading Mistborn, without telling them it's a trilogy until it's too late for them to stop reading. I currently have two that have started Mistborn, one that's starting WoK when she has time to read instead of listen to it at work (apparently fluff-type books work well for that, but there's too much in WoK that missing a page or so is a rather big deal haha), and one that's halfway through WoR. The spread of influence is accelerating, as more and more friends bring their recommendations to bear, so I'm guessing we'll all (about 8 or 9 of us) will have read basically everything Sanderson by the time Book 3 is out
The Ja he/him
I've gotten two friends to read it, plus put it on a third's list, once he's done with The Wheel of Time, which I also forced convinced him to read.
Maffu17 he/him
Nicely done +8 and +3, if we keep spreading like this we'll be able to form a religion in a few years, tax breaks and extra holidays here we come!
Glaring at the Survivor he/him
I got someone to read the SA. He had read Mistborn first, though. He is not very cosmere-aware, though. And he hasn't even read Warbreaker!
Sphinx
I read Mistborn to my husband during our 30-hour drive when we moved. He's been a fan and spreading the word of brandon to his coworkers ever since. I gave my father Way of Kings for his birthday last year, which effectively got him and my brother hooked. My father has now read everything that Sanderson's published, and my brother's read Mistborn. My mother is daunted by the length of the books, but talking about finding a time to sit down and find out what we're all raving about. An out of state friend and I swap recommendations frequently, so she's now thoroughly hooked on Brandon Sanderson. Two other friends have him on their "to read" lists, and I contribured to another friend's addiction by joining her husband in encouraging her to read them. No curse so far...

You spent 30 hours reading Mistborn out loud? Reading books out loud tends to take more time so that's pretty insane and impressive! Personally I finally recruited a friend to mistborn and now he is a big time Brandon fan and I have also gotten my best friend to get Steelheart which he really enjoys. I have another friend who will get Steelheart and online on my Asoiaf role play account on Facebook, I have convinced about 3-4 people to read mistborn so far.

I think you're at least at +10 very good work on your infection rate too. Have you been baiting and teasing him with juicy titbits of information? e.g. I try to appeal to my programmer friends by using warbreaker as an example for how similar the magic system is to creating a program. traceria she/her
A belated thanks for the upvotes, folks! And one especially for you, Sphinx! That's awesome you read all of Mistborn out loud! You make me hope that one day we (brother and I) can get my dad reading SA. I think he'll need to retire first because he really only has time to read on vacation, and I just don't see him getting through the whole thousand pages of even one book in a week's time. I'll mention this idea to my brother for future strategizing. Update on the one out of state friend: She's now reading Warbreaker and I'm loaning her my copy of Elantris on Monday, which I just reread. Kipper he/him
Had to thread necro this because I just had my first convert! I started a friend off with Mistborn and he's already addicted. Our exchange went something like this: Me: Hey, do you want to try this book by this incredibly awesome and fantastic author who I would sacrifice everything for? Him: Um, sure? Me: He writes really awesome magic systems... Him: Different magic systems than the same old crap?! I love new magic systems! Take me to this book! Me: Well, *cackle* I happen to have all his books on my person right now...*rubs hands gleefully*...here, have this one called the Final Empire; in fact, have the whole series.
Cheese United he/him
Yea I just got a friend into Mistborn. Resisted for a year, year and a half but is now fully obsessed. Greatest thing ever when she finally had to admit that Brandon was as good I'd hyped him up to be. Just gotta work on my other friends now... Xaladin he/him
There are likely a lot of unknowns here. For one, I am 99% sure the person who got me to read them doesn't know that I read them. I actually tell people not to read works by Brandon Sanderson. My argument is something like the following: 1. If you read tWOK, you Will (not "should" or "will want to", but Will) read WOR. 2. tWOK and WOR are both over 1000 pages. 3. If you have life or are busy, you can't afford to read anything by Brandon Sanderson, as you will lose your life as you know it. However, this (reverse-psychological) argument actually makes people more likely, not less likely to start reading. After all, if it's addictive, I want in, right?
Windreader she/her
I haven't been able to convince many people, but I'm reading WoK out loud to my dad, gave Mistborn to my friend, and convinced my little sister to read Alcatraz sometime soon. I've been pestering my mom, but no luck so far... At least dad loves tWoK
Redbird he/him
I got a friend of mine to read Wok and WoR, then mistborn, and my sister has read all the non cosmere and mistborn, which I showed her first.
CabbageHead he/him
I only got one guy to read some of the books, he liked them at first but I don't think they were dark enough for him. dayman
1. Wife listens to audiobooks with me. She misses chapters here and there but knows the stories to all primary cosmere novels through no consent of her own. 2. Sent sister the mistborn books. Don't know if she ever read them. Need to follow up and ask actually. 3. Told friend to read mistborn. He started. He didn't finish.
