We know it's a novella he can't discuss for contractual reasons but we should know by late this year, it's not the Dark One or Infinity Blade, nor is it as exciting to Peter Ahlstrom as Dark One, and most importantly we know it's not Cosmere :(

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

Is, "Secret Project," Infinity Blade?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Secret project is not Infinity Blade. I'm sorry. Secret Project is a secret. Secret Project I cannot discuss for contractual reasons.

[Dark One], IMHO, has "secret project" written all over it. Anyone care to confirm?

Peter Ahlstrom

It’s not the secret project. Brandon talked about this with Dark One in his State of the Sanderson in December, but not with specifics.

Secret project is a lot less exciting, for me.

Brandon Sanderson

I have the last quarter of this year earmarked to write the final Mistborn (Wax and Wayne) novel, which leaves me around six or seven months to play with, and I’m hoping to finish another book in the Skyward series. However, before I dive into that, there’s a certain novella I need to write. We’re listing that as “Secret Project” and it’s not anything you’re probably guessing. I’ll reveal it when the time is right, but for now, it’s not cosmere, and is not something I’ve talked about before.

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

When are we gonna find out about the Secret Project?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Before State of the Sanderson, I would guess. Around that time, probably, is when it will be announced.

I still think that he's writing one of the Magic: The Gathering stories. Not sure that'd be long enough to call it a 'novella', but if my sketchy knowledge of Magic sets coming up is correct, I believe that either the second or third Return to Return to Ravnica set would fit this timeline. Plus the third one is poised to be a pivotal and important bit in Magic lore, with Nicol Bolas and everything going on there (possibly?) finally getting a resolution. So getting someone like Brandon, a big-name fantasy author who is also a magic fan, would make perfect sense.

But I guess we'll find out soon enough whatever it is.

This seems plausible, I also think it could be something Wheel of Time related.
