Mayhem of Era 2

Tena sat patiently on a rooftop, looking out over the Canyon Ward, waiting for him to arrive. She scratched Bud behind the ears and kept watch.

Now that sixteen years had passed without major incident, the canyon that the thermo-nuke had made was lined with houses at the bottom. Already, three large bridges had been constructed, spanning the pit and meeting with the Canton of Combat near the center. Nuclear radiation was at a minimum because of the many different Aons that covered most homes and buildings. Her own house was quite safe; she'd hired an Elantrian and a Lightweaver to help her make it safely. Built in the canyon wall, only the balcony protruded, while carefully placed windows provided light to her plants inside. No stairs led up or down to the house; it took either the Surge of Gravitation or Steelpushing powers to reach it.

The people themselves appeared to have already forgotten the terrible events that had destroyed many of their homes, they walked around on the sturdily built wooden stairways or walkways, mothers carrying children, calling to each other and laughing, men walking to work in the early-morning damp, climbing over and around buildings and bunching together to joke and chat. The children were even happier, having never experienced the traumatic events of the Alleywar. They laughed and played and begged for sweets and did all the things children should do.

It's good to have finally recovered, Tena thought, both about the city and herself. Her spren, Iffina, circled around her anxiously, unused to Tena's current serenity.

Not that it could last much longer.

Fangblade arced across the Alleycity, his powers now coming naturally to him. He burned steel while also storing speed in a metalmind that looked like a chokechain around his neck. He surprised many pedestrians below, some clapping excitedly at the sight of him, others staring, still others cowering in fear. The Alleywar had left many people emotionally scarred, those who'd witnessed battles between Invested people were dead scared of Investiture, while those whose lives had been destroyed by those battles hated any Invested, though there were many in the Alleycity.

Fang extinguished his steel, falling to the ground at a narrow angle, flicking one of his hindfeet to make one coin fly out behind him. He Pushed on it, throwing himself forward. He hit the walkway running, his long four-footed strides making him go faster than any human could, with the possible exception of a Steelrunner. He slowed, so as to not bowl over any unsuspecting humans. He soon trotted down the wooden walkway, passing humans that would pet his back or just walk by. He was fine either way.

Arriving at his pre-determined destination, Fang jumped onto the low roof of a building on the edge of the Alleycanyon. Tena sat on the edge, and he approached her and Bud, wagging his shaggy tail in greeting.

"C'mere, boy," Tena called softly. Fang walked up to her on the side that Bud wasn't occupying, receiving the scratching under the chin Tena offered him. It was a clear-skied morning, which both Fang and Bud appreciated; neither enjoyed being rained on. It was a beautiful day.

An ideal day for a bunch of 17th Sharders to crash, what say?

Tena sighed, and stood up. The view was good, but she couldn't waste the entire morning.

She picked up Bud, the walked off the roof. She Pushed on the strip of metal that was embedded into the balcony on her house, slowing her descent and landing on the balcony. She put Bud down as Fangblade landed on the stone beside her, then walked into the door of her house. She fried some eggs, made them into huevos rancheros, and ate them. Fangblade devoured the cow leg she put out for him, and Bud, better mannered than his compatriot, politely ate his kibble.

Maybe I'll get to see Silas today, Tena thought, without much hope. She saw her son less and less as the years went on. She sighed, again. Maybe someone would start a fight or something, that always cheered her up. She needed something to do.

Tena growled angrily at the note, then dropped it into her recycling bin. She walked into her bedroom and ran her hand along the books that covered one wall. Assassin's Quest, Oathbringer, History of the Amyr, A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dummy's Guide to Housework... that last one was it. She pulled it out and checked the appendix, then flipped to the chapter on building shelves. She scanned the list of stuff she'd need for the kind of shelf she wanted, memorizing it. Tena put the book back into its place, then walked out to her balcony, standing on the edge and feeling the wind on her face. It felt wonderful.

She climbed onto the rail and stared down. She had always loved heights. Jumping off, she burned steel, some of which she always had in her, then dropped a coin and Steelpushed her way to the top of a house near the Canton of Combat Emissary, a house that had a wooden walkway over the top of it. Tena walked down it to a convenient Home Depot, then purchased several planks of wood and a few iron pipes.

This is going to be fun.
