Spren are behind greatshell and chasmfiend size. Spren and gemhearts. WoB states that gemhearts grow using similar mechanics as atium in the Pits in Mistborn. Being that it would fit with intent, its possible that the body of Cultivation serves as a conduit for greatshell growth.

My theory concerning shardplate is an outgrowth of that. Namely, shardplate is Cultivations contribution to the fight, either willingly or by enterprising spren or Surgebinders. They work on similar principles to greatshells: spren bond powered by gems. At one time, these gems were replenished by Cultivation herself, allow for easy destruction and regrowth (serving to dismiss and recall the helmets, for example). Currently, the gems must be replenished as any other gem. Changes in the spren bond similar to shardblade could also diminish old capabilities.

The use of spren would also account for the healing of Shardplate, and why it fits to each person.

Good counterpoint Kaellok, I do not recall seeing Heradls wearing shardplates but i thought plausible theory in relation to the shardblade theory. But i still believe it relates to stormlight and has more magical propeties than it does physical properties.

My big problem with Shardplate being some sort of Aluminum is that Aluminum is much lighter than other metals used in Armor. Sure some sort of investiture could increase its strength, but why would it weigh so much more than steel plate?

I don't think Shardplate being soulcast Aluminum is reasonable given this.

Good point. Where the Blades are light, Plate is heavy. Odd, that, but it means Plate probably wasn't aluminum.

Although I like the idea of Shardplate being a fabrial that replicates regrowth and cohesion, it doesn't fit with the KR. The KR Plate definitely seems spren-based, and I'm going with the lesser spren theory.

I´m starting to like the lesser Spren theory.

From all the ideas I have seen up until now it can be used best to explain the difference after the Recreance. The KR could use it before because the living Spren didn´t need to be feed Stormlight or feed themself on the light emited by the kinght, now that they are death the Shardplate turned into something similar to a fabrial and needs Stormlightinjections to funtction. The form can change because the Spren rearange themself or because new Spren are captured in fabrial style, same for the helmets disappearing. Furthermore all the lesser Spren that the KR attract would have a purpose besides the cinematic value.

Two discrepancys I could think of is the difference in weight, which could be explained by the higher number of Spren, and why Syl doesn´t dislike them, wich could be explained by them being lesser ones that aren as concious. On that matter, Syl doesn´t dislike fabrial, does she? Afterall those also have Spren captured within, just as Shardplate would have, if it was made from lesser Spren.

The theory I consider most credible is that Shardplate is composed of a suit of armor imbued with lesser spren. That's why it's so heavy. Syl wouldn't dislike Plate, because the spren involved aren't dead. They weren't fully bonded to a Radiant, so they never died.
