Assuming that whatever you're stabbing with is metal, it is a hemalurgic spike.

If I did not know any better, I think this AonEne is not so secretly looking to join the DA....

Friendly reminder, hemalurgy requires Intent.

So sorry about this Fluff, there are guild conflicts going on. Feel free to join one, or stay out of it completely and focus on the theorizing or writing corners of the shard. Glad to have you.

Yes, I apologize for us bringing you into this. If you do end up wanting to join one, I recommend TUBA.

And for the last time, I don't spike people. Never have and never will. That's not what TUBA does.

I could not resist this:

But, the intent doesn't have to come from the person doing the spiking.

The DA has plenty of things providing the intent, all you need to do is poke someone with metal.

I will agree to disagree. From a cosmere theory standpoint, I would approach it the same way as giving Breath. If somebody says “my life to yours, my Breath become yours” by accident, there is no Intent and the transfer does not occur. Just because somebody else wants the transfer to happen does not mean that it occurs. Personally, I believe this is because Intent opens a Connection with the investiture, allowing it to travel along an otherwise blocked pathway, but that is a tangent better saved for a theories thread. Again, apologies to Fluff for hijacking your thread.

I believe we will, though I am sure that I am right. By the "Thing" providing intent, we mean the shard of ruin. The same ruin who was providing intent for when (Mistborn hero of ages spoiler)

Spoiler

spook was spiked.

Quote

Brandon Sanderson

Intent is a big part of a lot of the magics, including Hemalurgy, meaning that you need to know what you're doing. Or somebody needs to-- There needs to be Intent involved in what's happening to you.

Questioner

So like with Spook when he got spiked, where was the Intent?

Brandon Sanderson

The person who was driving that spike was being influenced by Ruin, and the Intent was there

In that case, Spook was under the influence of Ruin, providing Intent. He was not a third party entirely, as you suggest. Part of that is likely due to the amount of Ruin in all humans on Scadrial, and part likely due to the state of mind Spook was in after becoming a Savant, especially while on death’s door. Also, Ruin is a shard, and has considerably more ability to influence people and magic systems, especially his own (hemalurgy) than a non affiliated mortal would. These are very different circumstances, and the parallel you draw is tenuous at best.

Spoiler

Spook wasn't doing the spiking, it was a random soldier who stabbed spook through a pewter misting.

I haven’t read it in a while, and you are likely right, but I still believe the nature of Ruin providing Intent is only possible due to shardic status. The soldier himself may have been spiked or guided by Ruin in some way.

Whatever the case, once again I am sorry for derailing an intro thread.

Of course. Who did you think was providing the intent for all the spikings? The DA has Ruin on a long term contract.

I am also sorry for derailing the intro threads.

You DO?

Guys, Harmony has betrayed humanity! What do we rusting DO?!?!?!?

Well its obvious that it had to happen. he needs to balance preservation and ruin somehow because of the extra preservation in all the people. this is what he does to balance it.

I'm at a loss.  I can heal people, and if the peson is "important" enough, I can sacrifice my life for theirs (see my about me for details)  But this just may be outside of my pay grade!

It is not a betrayal. He is helping us, and himself stay harmonious.
