I haven't read any of his stuff yet which is actually why I am here. I here his worlds are all interconnected and as such I don't want to start in the wrong spot. Any suggestions as to which books I should actually start with?

He also warned me that I probably shouldn't trust anything at first until I'm caught up.

Publication order-ish is usually best, I would suggest starting with Elantris for the Cosmere (the interconnected worlds). he does have other books which are not connected.

(also, who is your friend who introduced you to the Shard?)
