[OB] Interlude 8 Aether

Hey sorry if this has been asked or referenced before but upon my reread of Oathbringer i noticed that in interlude 8 Mraize makes a comment about how Mem has gotten Aether out of his red trousers. Is Aether of Night going to become a cannon book? I thought It was good but doesn’t fit in the cosmere. Can someone help clarify this for me?

Aether of Night is most definitely not canon. However, I think this easter egg implies that Brandon might rewrite it or at least put a few aspects of the magic system into a different book.

Brandon has said that the wold, and most aspects of Aether of Night is a part of the Cosmere, but that the story that he wrote about it wasn’t canon, like characters and stuff.

My question is if the aether in question is from the Liar book or if its from Aether of Night

The book itself isn't canon, but the substance Aether certainly exists.

Yeah, I wouldn't get too hung up on the actual form of Aether, though it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume it is a substance of some kind which is physically bonded to a human enabling their access to investiture, as that seems the general concept behind Aethers.

Ok, I read the Liar chapters, but I have not read the Aether of Night book yet, but can any one give me a tentative non-canon explanation of Aethers?

Hey, I know that Aethers are mentioned in OB, but any specifics from unpublished books shouldn't be discussed in this forum without spoilers around them. Please edit your post to put the stuff in spoilers.

With the new State of the Sanderson (19.12.2017),

I would guess the Aether Mraize sullied himself with is from Aether of Night. And we know that at least on Roshar there are cleaning specialists to remove the odd remnant of an Aether from your clothes.

Note: Magic system is canon. "Only" plays it a bit down. I will read Aether again - probably during the holidays - in respect to the magic system and its connections to the cosmere. Then we can play the Shard-guessing game again...

According to the latest State of the Sanderson, the magic system from Aether of night is the only thing that's still canon. Which means the Aethers in Cosmere at this point are the same as what we see in the unpublished novel.
