Hatzis Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 (edited) Hello! I just finished the The Hero of Ages on Saturday, and now I'm trying to decide where to go next. I loved the series so much, I was actually kind of paralyzed for a day. In fact, I don't think I've loved a set of books this much in probably close to five years. I probably should have read The Eleventh Metal and Secret History before moving on, but I couldn't help myself and have started into The Way of Kings because of the impending Oathbringer release... Anyways though, hi again! I'm welcome to any suggestions about forum topics or other sources that I should read to get more into Cosmere lore and theory! Edited October 9, 2017 by Hatzis 4
CaptainRyan he/him Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Welcome! I, too, remember my first time finishing Mistborn and absolutely loving it! The ending is so incredibly well done! If Cosmere lore and theory are what you seek then "Mistborn: Secret History" is probably the best book for you right now; especially while the events of the first trilogy are still fresh in your mind. Some people caution against reading "Secret History" until after you've read "Bands of Mourning" but I have never seen the need for that. Also, I would strongly suggest you read "Warbreaker" before you read the Stormlight Archive. There are some interesting elements from "Warbreaker" that make understanding a few small parts of the Stormlight Archive easier. But, you definitely do not need to read "Warbreaker" first. Good luck in your Cosmere adventure! Beware of spoilers in the forums! 1

I’ll check out Secret History soon, and I’ve actually got Warbreaker loaded onto my Kindle, so maybe I’ll read that instead before I get too deep into Stormlight!
Toaster Retribution he/him Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 If you are getting into Stormlight I would recommend reading Warbreaker before Words of Radiance (Stormlight 2). It is not necessary, but you will enjoy WoR even more if you do it that way. Secret History can be read before Bands of Mourning. One thing that is revealed in BoM is revealed in SH too, and so you´ll miss out on one of the twists of that book. Reading SH directly after Hero of Ages should work as well though. It depends on how you are as a person. If you want every to be surprised at every twist, then wit with SH. If not, then you can read it before BoM. Elantris is also pretty good, but I would advice you to read that one last. Not because it spoils anything (it doesn´t) but more because the other things Brandon has written are either more relevant to the Cosmere lore, or more relevant to Stormlight, which is the main buzz right now thanks to Oathbringer. Hope you enjoy the next book, no matter what you pick! 1

Thanks to you as well for all the advice! 1

I was going to start on Era II, but I knew I would tear through them in a month and the prospect of waiting for The Lost Metal scared me!
StrikerEZ he/him Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 @Hatzis Welcome to the Shard! Have an upvote and a free spiked delicious cookie! Spoiler DISCLAIMER: Side effects include, but are not limited to, hearing voices, gaining supernatural powers, having the sudden urge to kill everyone, and completely losing control over your mind and body. The Dark Alley™ claims no liability for any damage done to/by the eater of this cookie. Honestly, I'd recommend reading Stormlight Archive last. It has the most Cosmere cameos out of all of them, and it's the best one. Even if you don't read Elantris or Era 2 first, I'd definitely recommend reading Warbreaker first. And I'd recommending reading SH after BoM. The reveal at the end is so much better that way. Anyway, welcome again, and congrats on being my first welcome in a long time! 1
Catie she/her Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 @Hatzis that's... actually very good reasoning, man i wish i had done that 1

It seems like Warbreaker is one of the common threads, so I do think that I'll set WoK aside for now and read that right now. Thanks for the welcome!
