Question

Posted

I'm rereading TWoK after having (sort-of) reread HoA over my wife's shoulder (she just finished Mistborn Era 1, and dove right into TWoK, I think I've hooked her!).  I noticed that Kadash (Dalinar's ardent) is described as having a scar across his head that sounds very similar to the one that I remember Demoux getting at the end of HoA.  Now that I'm starting to keep my eyes peeled for worldhoppers and the like, this seems like too striking of a similarity to chalk up to coincidence, but when I started searching through the boards here I found no theories about Kadesh and Demoux being connected or being the same person.  Am I missing some obvious reason that this couldn't be the case?

To the best of my knowledge this was the first confirmation that Demoux is Thinker:

QUESTION

Is Thinker from the Purelake scene Demoux [from the Mistborn Trilogy]?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Demoux is indeed in that scene.

And for those who didn’t hear, about the other one, there is a scene in the Way of Kings. People have been trying to figure out… there are some members of… there are some people there that I have hinted are from other books, and they have now figured out two of the three. I don’t think you’ve figured out the third one, and you won’t because…

MI'CHELLE

Has their book been written yet? Has their book been published?

BRANDON SANDERSON

. Their book has not been published yet. I won’t say if it’s been written yet. Is anyone confused at what’s going on there? There is a connection between the books.

FOOTNOTE

What Brandon nearly says about "members" seems to imply that those in the Purelake scene are indeed members of the Seventeenth Shard.

Demoux is thinker, Galladon is Grump, and Baon is Blunt. They are all members of the Seventeenth Shard and are chasing after Hoid for various theorized reasons.

As far as Kadash, I doubt it's more than coincidence. Kadash has been the property of Dalinar for years by what he says in the book, and they know his history as an soldier prior to that. Demoux has his own work to do with the Seventeenth Shard and I doubt he'd want to be penned down for a long time.

Additionally, the plague in the Purelake mentioned at the end of WoR is the common cold, confirmed to have been brought to Roshar by our sworn non-interventionist friends, so their arrival appears to be somewhat recent.

The only confirmed perpendicularity location that I think we have is the horneater peaks. We know that Honor's moves... And either is, or is connected in some way to the highstorms. The arrival location of the Shard members lends itself to the idea of a perpendicularity in the Purelake because that's where the plague originates, but we've seen no other evidence than those three.

Edit: Ninja'd while writing a novel.

He is in the first set of interludes in TWoK, with the clear lake denizen. He is the one nicknamed, The Thinker

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did see that other sighting (I assume that you're referring to the purelake interlude), but if he is capable of worldhopping then wouldn't hopping between regions of the same world be easier for him?  (EDIT: May not be that simple if there aren't multiple perpendicularities on Roshar, but he could still travel across Roshar by more conventional means)

If there's some reason that they can't both be Demoux, why is there a stronger case for him at the purelake than as Kadash?

Do you think that Kadash's doppleganger scar is a coincidence? I think they're both described as a light tan as well...

Thank you for your thoughts!

It has been confirmed as demoux, but I'm not sure where. Maybe @Calderis could find it.
