Tracking Shards

Kplynch21

Question

I just finished reading the manuscript for Aether of Night, and it lead me to wonder about the remaining shards in the Cosmere and in what future books will there likely be new shards found. Here is the list I have compiled at the moment

  1. Devotion (Aona)
  2. Dominion (Skai)
  3. Preservation (Leras) [Later Harmony]
  4. Ruin (Ati) [Later Harmony]
  5. Odium (Rayse)
  6. Cultivation (unknown but Hoid calls her Slammer)
  7. Honor (Tanavast)
  8. Endowment (Edgli)
  9. Autonomy (Bavadin)
  10. Ambition (Unknown)
  11. Survival Shard
  12. Unknown
  13. Unknown
  14. Unknown
  15. Unknown
  16. Unknown

For the remaining shards, we know that some of the books that Brandon is planning to write (excluding Silence Divine which is set to take place on Ashyn, which does not have any shards) are Dark One, Dragonsteel, Skyward, and Aether of Night. Am I missing anything? If so, can you help out? Thanks.

Aether is most likely a Shardworld, so that should (if we get it) give us one (possibly two) others.

Dark One... I hope is a Shard world?

I don't know anything about Skyward, so I can't comment.

Dragonsteel.. Ah this one. This is the big one I think. Dragonsteel is going to be set on Yolen and tell the events leading up to the Shattering. It should introduce us to all of the Vessels. It should also let us know all of the Shard names by the end if we don't already have them at that point. I'm trying to find a specific WoB at the moment, but it says (or at least implies) that the intents were known and chosen before the Shattering actually occurred. If we meet all the Vessels, and see those events it should answer all these questions while creating who knows how many more.

It's a shard that wants to survive, but its intent is not survival.

I know I just was too lazy to say that and am pretty sure that it was not any of the formerly mentioned shards. Sorry that I didn't clarify.

I think that's pretty comprehensive. Brandon hasn't mentioned Skyward in quite a while that I'm aware of so I'm not sure if that's going to be A Thing still or not. And if you want to discuss the potential Shardic implications of Aether of Night's eventual rewrite, there's a good topic on the AoN discussion board going over our ideas for how we'd 'fix' the issues Brandon has mentioned with Aether and/or how we'd integrate it with the rest of the Cosmere. But my own guess is that we'll get another Shard out of it when the time comes.

Oh, and while it could be refering to Autonomy (per the theory that Bavadin isn't located on Taldain but rather its sun) we have WoB that there is a Shard that isn't on any planet.

I think it's unlikely that any new shardworlds will be dishardic based on what Khris says in AU about dishardic worlds being unusual. If half the shards invest dishardic worlds, and one invests no world at all, then in terms of the number of total shards more are invested in dishardic worlds than single shard worlds. Of course one can always look at that from the perspective of the total number of shard invested worlds, which would be 7 single to 4 dishardic in that scenario, but that still wouldn't really qualify dishardic worlds as notably unusual.

So I think the remaining shards we encounter will invest single shardic worlds (except the origin story of course). I could see a scenario in the far future series where shards divest and converge however...

Harmony averted his gaze from Scadrial momentarily. Movement. Ominous movement. Now? After having been denied understanding for so long? Why did they hunt him now?
