Hello, all! I'm new to the forums. I've browsed to some small degree in the past, and I'm far from well versed. I'm hoping I can fix that.

I'm currently working through my first run of Elantris. I've read the first 3 Mistborn books, and the first 2 Stormlight Books, and own the Arcanum, I've had very little time lately to read that one to any major degree.

While I'm waiting for the release of the next Stormlight Archive book, what order would y'all recommend I read Sandersons books? Any that I should avoid? (Im interested in the Cosmere as a wholw, and more specifically whichever books have tie ins to the Stormlight books.) Any favorites?

Anyway, I recommend reading The Alloy of Law. It's set in the Mistborn world, Scadrial, 300 years after the end of the first trilogy. It's during the industrial revolution era of Scadrial, which is awesome because Allomancy and guns. It's really good.

Also, I'd recommend reading Warbreaker, which can be found for free on Brandon's website. It is a really good story all by itself, but it makes some certain events/characters in SA make more sense.

Also, once you've read the other Cosmere books, I'd recommend rereading both WoK and WoR so you can catch all of the hidden secrets and worldhoppers.

EDIT: I just realized I reached my limit on upvotes for today. Tag me tomorrow and I'll come upvote you. (Which you can do by doing this: @StrikerEZ)

I'll risk the side effects!

I'll admit, I've been avoiding the Alloy of Law because of the guns... and I may or may not have finished the last Mistborn book now that I think on it, but I have read some spoilers on it.

Warbreaker is the one concerning "breath", right? I've been meaning to read that one.

Right now I've got the SA books on audible, and I'm going through those for the 5th time....while trying to read Elantris at the same time. :P

Warbreaker is good.

If I might ask, why do "guns" make you want to avoid era 2?

Aw, come on, the guns are one of the coolest parts! :P Seriously though, the Wax & Wayne series is awesome. It's so different from the first trilogy, but it's its own thing and it feels amazing. Plus, the guns aren't too overused either.

Yup, that's the one.

Hmmm...I'd wait until you finish Elantris and Warbreaker before doing that. There are some awesome hints hidden in the SA books from those two books.

Welcome. Warbreaker is the one with breaths. The only Sanderson book that took me three tries to finish, but I ended up really liking it. Lightsong is one of my favorite Cosmere characters. I would never tell you to avoid any Sanderson books, but hold off reading Reckoners and the Rithmatist until you finish his Cosmere works first.

I usually enjoy my fantasy to be without guns. It's an odd quirk. Although, I've made an exception for The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks...

Ah, that makes sense. Well, if you can make an exception for that series, then you'd probably be fine with AoL as well.

I guess what I mean by "avoid" is which books fall outside the purview of the cosmere.

That's what I hear, and I believe it! I just want to focus on the cosmere stuff at the moment.

That's how I'm feeling about Elantris. I frequently have to put it down because it gives me the skeevies sometimes. XD

Brandon wanted to show a world that progresses dynamically like our own, rather than remaining static for millennia like you so commonly see in fantasy.

Era 2 is set 300 years after Hero of Ages. You see a world progressing into the beginning of electricity and automobiles, while retaining the familiar magic system, and the events of the original series have become the religions and folklore of the world.

It's a very refreshing concept actually, and the progression of the understanding of the magic as a near science is the basis of much of our understanding of the magical rules that govern the Cosmere.

If you can't bring yourself to read them, I can understand that. If you do choose to skip them it will definitely hamper your knowledge of the Cosmere.

There are 4 planned Era's for the Mistborn world, the first which you've read, Era 2 at Scadrial's industrial revolution, era 3 (forthcoming) set in roughly modern day, and Era 4 which will be a space age society, with the magic system running as a constant throughout.

The core cosmere works as planned are SA, and Mistborn.

Ok, knowing THAT,  I'll give it a shot at some point. Probably after I actually finish Hero of Ages, Elantris, and Warbreaker. :P

Edit: typos. I make them a lot.
