He is doing it for others, but has a very warped, zealous way of thinking, unlike most others. 

I agree, his words when betray Kaladin, and his letter at the end of WoR, always seem to me like a way of convince himself that it is done for a good reason, that in the long run it will better for everyone.

That's the key in my mind right there, they're to convince himself. He doesn't truly believe it. He shows shame at that point because he recognizes the truth in Kaladin's words.
