But each type of great shell has a different type of gemheart I believe, and a different type of spren I assume.  And each type of gem is associated with particular surges.  That is why all the fabrics of that type use a specific gemstone.

Many great shells have a specific type. The Chasm fiends are shown to be as valuable as they are not only for their size but for their varying gemhearts.

Either way, the primary surge that would allow them to grow beyond the limits set by the square cube ratio would be gravitation, so any spren providing that benefit to a greatshell should be similar enough to provide a near identical benefit and thus grant a narrow variety of surges when trapped in a gem.

Unless the gem type changes the surge a spren can provide, which if Roshar's focus is bonds and not spren is feasible, then maybe. If the surge is decided solely by the Spren than I'd vote against this option.

Well actually the gemhearts from chasmfiends are all emeralds. Which are generally used to soulcast food. That's an important resource for an army. Calling in @Yata, since I think he was the one that got WoB on this.

As for hemalurgists, I don't think they are all necessarily immediately savants on being spiked, but they are well on their way. If they have multiple spikes, I'd say they are there. Getting steelsight might take a bit for someone with only one spike, but I would bet inquisitors get it practically immediately.

Really? I only have tWoK in ebook format and found nothing either way in a quick search there. I didn't mean to mislead anyone, but I swear I remember picking that bit up somewhere. Damnation

whether you could become a Feruchemical savant by tapping a large unkeyed store that someone else compounded. Then the power isn't coming straight from Preservation. My guess is that the answer is yes. The question at hand is whether tapping is a power stream capable of causing savantism. I agree that under normal circumstances a Ferring would likely never become one, but it should be possible given minor shenanigans.

I guess the point is that yeah that's a use of an end-neutral system that would cause it but that person is effectively getting the power from another source. Not in the true sense but that person doesn't have to balance their tapping worth storing. My mistake was saying flat out that you can't do it with an end-neutral system, so I definitely accept that qualification.

To add a third side to this discussion: I don't think there is any functional difference between decades of storing, and a compounded store. They take massively different amounts of time to create, but if the power is not any different then you could become a Feruchemical Savant through entirely natural means in an End-Neutral System. It's not remotely feasible unless you are TLR or at the 5th Heightening so you can live forever, but it's circumventing the power from another source problem by taking forever(which, ironically enough, is what the other source circumvents by compounding :))

Some Grestshell has a variable Gemheart. Others (Chasmfield included) has a setted kind of Gemheart, It's the reason they are so convenient to hunt down.

You may notice as in two books, nobody ever asked the Gemheart's type after a Chasmfield's Hunt. This happends because they know only an Hemerald could be found. The priceful among the Polestones.
