Scrutiny Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Based on the latest release of chapter 7 I believe Shallan's flashbacks will be recreated as illusions. Pattern will force her to use her other surge of illumination to show her flashbacks and reveal the hidden truths thus making their bond stronger. The only backup for this theory is when Shallan asked her first memory of him he essentially forces her to start creating an illusion of the time. The setup of a lie spren in these three chapters in is interesting in that the spren finds it interesting to find lies hidden by truth. Edited January 21, 2014 by Scrutiny 2
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I like the idea of her flashbacks being experienced in real time as illusions instead of actual flashbacks like kaladin's were. That would allow her to work through the memories she has tried to suppress at the same time as the reader is experiencing them for the first time. It would also make that last sentence of chapter 6 a nice red herring, thinking she was going to be waking up to disaster on the ship when the "screams, smoke, and shouts" were memories. Guess we'll have to wait for the book release to learn if thats the case. 5

Upvotes to both of you. 2
Scrutiny Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Upvote for awesomeness for taking this theory one step further.

It would still be funny if Jasnah soulcast in her sleep, but after six years I would think her beyond that type of mistake.
TaliaRain Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 It's true. Jasnah's preferred essences seem to be vapor, blood and lucentia, based on the gems in her fake soulcaster and the substances she cast the robbers into. We don't know what Shallan's preferred essences are, if any. If I had to guess I would say blood, pulp, and maybe one other-- we don't know it has to be 3. I'm not seeing any pattern there. So she could have cast something to smoke, or to flame, or she could have cast something containing a flame to wood(less likely)
