  1. 1. If Kal's parents are in Hearthstone?

    • do you think/hope they will forgive him for Tien's death?
    • do you think/hope the opposite?
  2. 2. Location of Kal's parents

    • Hearthstone
    • elsewhere (precise in a post)
    • Dead (precise possible death cause in a post)
  3. 3. If they meet how will his parents react to him being a radiant ( his parents are religious and Vorin)

    • well they will overcome their vorin hatred of the radiants
    • badly

Hello, i don't think anyone has ever done a poll so that people can say whether they want Kaladin and

his parents to be reunified or not ( evil laugh in the background) so I just created one.

If you think/hope another option that wasn't in the poll will happen then feel free to tell me.

quick question too: aren't Lirin's name a lighteyes one and isn't Laral (the daughter of the first citylord of Hearthstone) a symetrical and so profane name.

Well, I suspect that there will be something bad that has happened or will happen, but a reunion with at least one parent will happen, i think.

Also to answer your question- symetrical is holy, not the other way around.

I'm not sure why Laral is completely symmetrical. I assume we'll know at some point.

It's also been noted upon a few times that Kaladin's name is also very "lighteyes"-ish. Maybe it has something to do with the tradition of their family or the fact that surgeons are usually quite highly regarded. I expect more will become clear later.

Hesina and Lirin most likely thought both Tien and Kaladin were dead, as neither returned. I don't think Amaram cared enough to send something like condolence letters, either. If his parents (or one of them) are still alive, I believe they would be really happy he was alive, but of course very sad Tien wasn't. I like to think his father would be proud of the way Kaladin used his medical knowledge to help where he could, then build off of that and create the storming team that storming guards the king. There's going to be some pride, for sure. Maybe disappointment that Kaladin continues to pursue a life of combat. Hesina's probably just plain old ecstatic to see him alive and thriving (... now) in the first place. I like to imagine them meeting Syl. There's probably not much left for them in Hearthstone. Perhaps they go back to Urithiru with Kaladin and become parents to the entire population there.

All I know for sure, though, is that if there is reunification, it will make me cry and that Sanderson will probably surprise us and pull a twist nobody expected would actually happen.

I suspect that Kaladin will arrive to find Hearthstone ruined by the Everstorm, but with survivors still there, including his parents. It would be a good place to start the "Leading" part of his Windrunner advancement - you know the saying, "only in his hometown is the prophet without honor" or something like this? Probably the hardest place for Kaladin to start leading people will be the one where everyone knew him since he's been born.

I really hope something can finally go right for Kaladin... It feels like he's had so much go wrong; if he gets home and finds his parents dead.... I just don't know, I guess hopefully he's strong enough now to deal with it; to be honest I've really got no idea where this plot line will go.

Actually, I have heard Brandon has read another Kaladin's chapter or perhaps it was the same one but it lasted longer. The "reunion" doesn't take long to happen... I haven't heard it or read it, but my understanding based on other people careful words were Kaladin meets up with his parents rather quickly. We already know they are both alive and it seems as if this arc will not last too long.

I half expected that the parents have either left Hearthstone after the boys didn't return - perhaps moving to Kharbranth, or Laral's been killed by some scheme by Roshone, or they're in prison on trumped up charges related to the Sphere's that were a "gift" by the previous city lord.

I also expect that Kaladin will find Roshone in power, and will be treated rather badly, and might expose himself as a radiant to save himself.

RAFO... :)

I think the name of his childhood friend is Laral but hopefully they will reunite and kick things off since all the other important characters have somebody.  Jasnah might find Kal here and maybe they will hit it off??? I'd say it's wishful thinking on my part, but whatever.

You know, I think I've read that, but it somehow slipped my mind. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where my ideas on what the future holds for Kaladin came from.

I can see this happenning. A good test for his "Protect even those I hate" Oath, wouldn't that be?

What I'm mostly worried about is not if his parents are alive, but if they're alive, how they are emotionally. Losing a child is the hardest thing parents can go through. (and they know Tien died. Didn't Kaladin write them a letter?) The grief and pain of it can tear a marriage apart. In one of Kaladin's flashbacks, Lirin had gotten drunk. What if he became an alcoholic? What added burden would that put on Hesina? What kind of affect would that have on Kaladin, seeing his parents like that? This was one of the things I couldn't stop thinking about when I finished both books. Out of all the "they didn't deserve it" characters, Kaladin didn't deserve it the most. In the first chapter,

Spoiler

He beats himself up for not making it to Hearthstone before the Everstorm.

At the very least he could find his parents safe and happy.

Oh storms, I'm going to cry reading book 3, aren't I?

My thoughts exactly. This topic is almost impossible to catch in simple yes / no poll questions. On other threads, people are speculating that Kaladin's character arc might come to an end soon because anything that can happen from now on won't be as personal as his struggles in the past. But I think that here, in Hearthstone, the next phase of his character arc will probably be initiated, and it will be a very personal one. His parents, and his relationship to them, will play an important part. And don't forget: he has yet to learn to let go of his slave scars.

Kaladin idolizes his father. Seeing his parents again will likely put Lirin in fallen hero status for a while, while Kaladin realizes his father is flawed just like everyone else.

I doubt he will take the revelation well at first.
