Stormgate he/him Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 It also depends on what you turn to once you break. Kaladin realized early on that his life isn't fair because of terrible lighteyes. His life falls apart, his father stealing spheres to send him to school. Then, he has a chance to do something honorable, to enlist in the army to save his brother's life. At this point, he was fractured a bit. That fracture grew when Tien died, and when Amaram stole his Shards. He came to regard lighteyes as dishonorable, as indeed many are, and so tried to be honorable himself, since someone had to. Dalinar took his brother's wish of a unified Alethkar and used that as his motivation to continue, even after losing his wife. Shallan, I can only imagine how her life fell apart, and she turns to the truth about people and the world to keep her purpose in life. The Knights turn to the Ideals not for power, but because they are afraid of who they would become otherwise. Kaladin would become as cruel as the lighteyes who made his life like Braize, Dalinar would be the drunken nobleman he was when Gavilar died, and Shallan would refuse to see what was in front of her, making her unable to fix the problems. 2
