In book one when Vin pulls in the mist to beat lord ruler, how does she do it? Sazed said in book three that he doesn't yet know and that she should have only have been able to do it after she drew in the well. So how did she pull on it, especially since it wasn't a gift by Preservation?

Theories

1) She wasn't able to merge with Preservation until after the well, but she was allowed to draw a limited amount in due to Preservation choosing her as his successor.

2) She was Connected to him enough at the time to just draw them in without his consent. (similar to the first one).

3) Ruin needed her to defeat lord ruler in order to be free. So maybe Ruin, or rust/trell or some other being who was able to manipulate the mist drew them in onto Vin in order so that Ruin could escape. This would make sense according to the comment that while Ruin couldn't destroy the mists, he could make them stronger.

Any other theories or suggestions on this? I am very curious.

I think people can draw on the mist without drawing on the well first. The Well is just needed if the person is going to ascend. This is supported by waxilium possibly drawing on the most in alloy of law.

Sazed did theorize that Vin absorbed some of the mists in childhood when she wasn't wearing her earring. He speculated that it could had been reason for her talent for Allomancy.

Without going in to details that may or may not be Secret History spoilers, it appeared that Preservation was preparing Vin to be the new HoA or even Shardbearer. Ruin intercepted it by influencing Vin's mother, and made the Bronze spike to introduce Ruin directly to her mind.

Preservation made a lot of plans, the details of which even Leras isn't entirely sure. But what is clear is that Vin was chosen to be used from a very early age. Taking in the mist was something Preservation gave her, as well as her ridiculous allomantic strength and finesse. Ruin blocked it, trying to suborn her to him.

The right one probably is the first, she has something like a "special pass" to the mist, of course without the attuning through the Well she can't be compatible to the whole Shard-level of Investiture.

The second is the only wrong at 100%, there is Allomancer more connected to Preservation than her (for example Elend) and they can't feed of the mist without consent.

More powerful as an allomancer doesn't necessarily mean more connected.

Actually yes, the only thing that the Lerasium does (the default outcome) is to rewrite your Spirit-Web to have a Stronger connection to Preservation (and this Strong connection make you a Lerasium-Mistborn). Because "probably" more you are connected to Preservation, more power you may obtain from him.

Also Vin probably when she was outside (without the earring) has assimilate some Mist (Gassous Leraisum) that slowly raise his Allomantic Power (and Connection to Preservation).

Sort of. There's stuff I can't go into here because it's spoiler territory but connection is comprised of much more than simply what magic system you use.

Also mist isn't really gaseous Lerasium, Lerasium refers specifically to the solid metal form. A very nitpicky point but an important one, the mists are the gaseous form of Preservations Investiture while Lerasium is the solid form but mists are not just gaseous Lerasium.

That's right, but I want to add that there is theoretically a way to distill lerasium from the mists. There is a WoB on this.

If I am not wrong, there isn't any kind of non-metallic solid Investiture.

And Mister Sanderson say that Vin's Ascension is quite "burn so many Lerasium to became the Shard itself" (it's a WoB about a Lerasium's Savant).

I think the WoB you're referring to said that you'd become a sliver. I could be wrong though.

EDIT: Never mind, found it.

DOUGLAS

What about a Lerasium savant? Or would that require so much Lerasium that the person attempting it would ascend to become a new Shardholder?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Basically, this is what ascension is.

Oh we did get that one answered? I've been too slack on interviews lately.

Well, disregard that second paragraph then :P

Food if you're Lift :P

Plus technically all of Scadrial, it was entirely created by Shards after all.

Was it? I always thought it was an existing planet that was effectively terraformed by Preservation and Ruin and then they created life on it.
