emailanimal he/him Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Not sure if this was officially asked before, but i got one of my questions answered. Q: If someone was taping gold, would spiking a separate ability out of them kill them? Or would it work at all? A: It IS possible to spike someone without killing them. But they'd never be the same. It would be worse than being a drab. I would compare it to a kid from Phil Pullman's Golden Compass whose daemon was severed. Seems like the same effect. 1

Yata he/him Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 (edited) (Sorry for the Double post) Missing Q&A in the Tor List (I hope that may be useful):Q: At what point did you determine Spook's ultimate place in the Mistborn universe? Was it planned up front?A: Spook was the big surprise in the series. Everything else was planned from the get go, but I grew to like him a great deal. So his place in the third book changed, and after finishing it, I planned out what he did next in my notes. Q: If you could bring one of your characters off the page and into the real world, which would it be and why? A: Sazed. I think he could teach me a thing or two. Q: The finale of Hero of Ages is incredibly ballsy. Were you at all concerned about backlash? A: Yes, I was. As was my editor. We both agreed it was the right ending, though, and so I didn't have to do much convincing. Q: loved Bands of Mourning! I love Wax and Wayne! Roughly when can we expect part 4 of their story? A: About a year after Stormlight 3 comes out, I'd guess Q: is there Cosmeric significance to W&W 4 being released after SA 3? A: No. More a rhythm of book releases, and making sure Stormlight books are more regular Q: Who/what was the inspiration for Wayne's character? He's the best! A: Really, it started with the hats and went crazy from there. Q: Do u think pantsers grow up to be planners? Or, r pantsers 4ever pantsers, & planners 4ever planners? A: I think that both pantsers and planners generally learn to use the tools of the others side on occasion. And some do swap, particularly for given books. But neither is the other in embryo Q: What's the book you've enjoyed the most writing? A: Hmm.... Probably one of the Alcatraz booksQ: Will you produce any more of your world maps as poster prints? Scadrial, Sel/Elantris, Nalthis...?A: This is a question for @IzykStewart. But I do think he plans to do more as we progress. Q: Other than Hoid, which character have you had the most fun writing? A: Waybe Q: White Sand's release has been teased/leaked by some retailers, are you able to give us a firm date on it?A: Honestly, it's whatever dynamite comics decides it is. If it's up on Amazon, that's a good guess--but not 100% confirmed. Q: any new information about the Steelheart movie? So excited about it! Will you be involved in making it? A: Last I heard, they had a script they liked, and were sending it out for a polish. I will be as involved as they will allow! Q: Could the spear used to Kelsier be used as an identity spike? A: I'm RAFOing most questions about Identity right now. (Sorry.) Q: With the White Sand graphic novels, do you intend to continue the sequence past the first MS of White Sand? A: Yes, if they are popular enough, I do. Q: Parshendi/Parshmen/Gemhearts vs ISIS/Non-radical Muslims/Oil - A comparison you've considered while writing? A: The Parshendi aren't the radicals, though. In that conflict, I'd argue that the humans are. Q: You did such a great job completing WoT - will you please consider finishing GoT when Martin finally dies before finishing? A: I don't think I'd be a good choice for those books. Let's just hope that George can finish his own series properly. Q: where did the Cosmere come from? What inspired you? A: Lots of things. Isaac Asimov connecting his Robot books and Foundation books was a partial inspiration to be certain. Q: when you write.do you see the characters as real people or cartoons or comics? A: Real people Q: Do you watch Doctor Who? And if so, would you like to write an episode? A: I have watched some Doctor Who and liked it a lot--but I don't do screenplays, so I might not be a good choice. Q: if you could have any of the powers from your books which one would you choose? A: Windrunning, probably Q: Radiant vs. Mistborn: who wins? A: Depends on the situation and the Radiant order. Edited February 7, 2016 by Yata 10
Meg Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 I just got my second Brandon-confirmed theory! I'm so proud! Q: Are either the blue-skinned Natans or blue-veined Babatharnams human-Aimian hybrids? A: Yes. Now I'm VERY curious about whether there is a connection between the Scouring of Aimia, the Shattering of the Plains, and the formation of the Purelake. Please help me. I don't get any connection between those three events. From TWoK (I-5 and Chapter 36) I got the impression that the Scouring of Aimia is not that far back (a few generations at the most). The Purelake is not *new*. It's on the map of the Silver Kingdoms also, that means it existed prior to the Recreance. The Shattering of the Plains, though, also seems for me to be far more back in time than the Scouring of Aimia, though I admit that this is just a gut feeling. However, I need help to see the connection.

However, I need help to see the connection. My assumption is that if those two races are part Aimian, could their existence or some action they took come into play as to why Aimians were hunt to nearly extinction. Not sure about purelake but regarding the shattering, I believe it is because the Natan people used to live where the shattered plains are, and moved after it shattered to near it to the east of it I believe. So there is not necessarily a causal relationship, but the poster feels there might be. At least that was my take away from it. I could be utterly and completely wrong lol. 2
Meg Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Thanks for your attempt to help. I'm curious if ecohansen will tell some clarification.
ecohansen Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Yup, Pathfinder, those were my thoughts exactly. Aimia had blue-skinned people, and experienced a major disaster (Scouring). The Plains had blue-skinned people (Natans), and experienced a major disaster (Shattering). The Purelake has blue-veined Babatharnams and Marebethians with "eyes of red and blue"--and at the very least, Dalinar's vision-tower in the Purelake is missing now (Tor.com seems confident that the vision DID take place in the purelake [ http://www.tor.com/2014/07/10/words-of-radiance-reread-chapter-4/ ]). At most, the purelake looks kinda like a crater. I'll admit that the purelake connection is super-weaksauce on all fronts. So, for some reason, wherever there are Aimians, there is also a disaster. This explains why Aimians are hated and feared. All this ties in with another almost-entirely unsupported hunch of mine: the Voidbringers and the Dawnsingers seem to be presented as opposites, and the Parshendi are the Voidbringers. So, it makes sense that Aimians, as the other nonhuman intelligence, would be the Dawnsingers. Moreover, the Plains, with their symmetry, seem to have been shattered with cymatic vibrations. Could the Plains have been Shattered by vibrations from Aimian/Natans engaged in Dawnsinging? 3

Could the Plains have been Shattered by vibrations from Aimian/Natans engaged in Dawnsinging? Thank you for your clarification. Did you post that theory somewhere else as an own thread also? If yes, could you link that thread? Be it as it is, I apologize for staying off topic in regard to the basic intention of this thread, daring to add some of my thoughts here. I see your points though I don't have made up an opinion about your idea yet. There are too much variables around, I'd say. No offense meant. As for the "eyes of red and blue" that "term" doesn't stem from the Marabathians's optic but from a (cruel) way of punishment. Sigzil tells about that in Chapter 40 in TWoK. I'll quote the paragraph but put it in spoiler tags (not because of potential spoiler-ism but because my quoting might be redundant). Sigzil shook his head. “Never. But the prisoners almost always take the chance. The Marabethians have a saying for someone who refuses to see the truth of a situation. ‘You have eyes of red and blue,’ they say. Red for the blood dripping. Blue for the water. It is said that these two things are all the prisoners see. Usually they are attacked within one day. And yet, most still wish to take that chance. They prefer the false hope.” Eyes of red and blue, Kaladin thought, imagining the morbid picture. TWoK Chapter 40 As for the Scouring of Aimia I understand "scouring" as an active thing, as in other people "scoured" Aimia from the Aimians, which seems also to have caused the dying of the lanceryn (TWoK Chapter 36). I kind of barely dare write that (given what is happening around our world) but I thought the scouring of Aimia has been more like a ethnic (or racist) cleansing. Though what caused that, I don't have any ideas. Where I want to go: I understand your theory more as the Scouring was something that was passively caused not actively. Thus I wouldn't agree about that with you at the moment. And thus there might be some wholes in your theory? I might -- how has Pathfinder put it -- be utterly and completely wrong, though. And if I misunderstood the meaning of a "Scouring" I'd appreciate help.
ecohansen Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hi Meg (last off-topic post, I swear) The idea evolved out of the thread where I proposed the Aimian-Natan-Baatharnam connection. My second post in that thread had the nucleus of the idea. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/32999-speculation-selay-and-natans-are-human-aimian-hybrids/ And yup, what we know about the Scouring is pretty vague, but ethnic cleansing is the most natural interpretation. Have you ever read C.J. Cherryh's Faded Sun Trilogy? It involves a race of people who, for one reason and another, were universally hated wherever they went. Although they themselves did relatively little that was wrong, every planet they settled on wound up getting nuked into oblivion by other cultures that hated them. One wonders if the Aiminas might be like that: innocent themselves, but still bringing doom to every place they settle. I don't have much else to back up this speculation, but if you think there's enough community interest, we could definitely start up a new thread to discuss it, or necro the old one.
Meg Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hi Eco, I didn't intended to make you feel guilty because of off topic. Honestly, I don't know if there is "enough community interest" but I'd beg someone from the staff to move my previous message (that from today) and your answer to your other thread. IMHO that wouldn't be thread necroing but instead putting topics together. Let's see what the staff does and I'll think about a further answer in the meantime. Btw. I don't know that trilogy. 'Night
Oudeis he/him Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Found this question of ChrisWhite Q: Could a sentient invested object take up a shard? A: Highly unlikely, probably impossible--but impossibility is hard to judge link While I am on board the 'Let Nightblood take up Odium and put context to "the weight of God’s own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context" ' ship it does take a hit here. While I thought that it's the end game of SA if it was the answer we were getting would be more coy or RAFOing answer. This is fascinating, since I asked an almost-identical question in his recent AMA, and was specifically told he was not going to answer such questions. Awesome! Thank you.
