I am confused

I just finished the original mist born series and am seriously confused...

1. How is kelsier still around?

2. I hear people saying there are a ton of other shards and am wondering what books those are from

3. People say kelsier held the shard of preservation before vin took it... Where does it say that?

The answers to these are spoilers for later era Mistborn books (Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, and Bands of Mourning) and the Mistborn novella (Mistborn: Secret History).

The Shards are an important part of the wider universe of the Cosmere, which the Mistborn books take place in.  The Cosmere books span multiple series.  The Stormlight Archive books,   Warbreaker  ,  Elantris , The Emperor's Soul, the Mistborn books, and a handful of short stories and novellas are set in the Cosmere.

As the previous response said, there are some spoilers involved.  I would probably tread lightly on the forums for a little while.  People are trying to avoid spoilers and the mods are clamping down hard, but there was just a book release and everyone's still excited.  Sometimes people let things slip or aren't subtle enough

1. I'll avoid spoilers on all these questions, but, you learn more about these mechanics in other books.  Brandon's said that sometime's it's possible for people to stick around like this, as something called a cognitive shadow, essentially like a ghost.

2. Each planet with on one of the books mentioned above has at least one.  There are sixteen total, but I think there's only eight or so on the planets we've seen so far.  Brandon's dropped some hints about a couple others.

3. There are subtle clues about this stuff in the text, but I don't know if it alludes to this in the text.  Brandon has told people when asked about it though.  I don't know how people managed to figure all this stuff out.

1. Simple answer? Magic. :P He's stuck around because he's stubborn, there are more detailed explanations but that's spoiler territory.

2.
Cosmere spoilers

Stormlight Archive - Honor, Cultivation & Odium
Elantris & Emperor's Soul - Devotion and Dominion
Warbreaker - Endowment
Mistborn - Ruin & Preservation

3. Mostly in Brandon interviews and annotations, there's nothing directly stating it in the first trilogy.

3. Actually it is said also in Shadows of silence. This isn't a spoiler, is it?

MeeLaan and Marasi conversation. Marasi says that Harmony's books(forgot the actual name) say that the Survivor took up the power for a while before Harmony.

Ps. I hope that this is allowed. Notify me if I should hide the post.

Oh, you meant Shadows of SELF, I thought you meant Shadows for Silence.

Those two titles, plus the unpublished Silence Divine, get everybody confused.  Brandon's even got them mixed up before.

Are the Alloy of Law books worth reading?

Without a doubt, they are far from just a side series.  Alloy falls into this camp more than the others, but it's still a quite good book.  There's always been ton of stuff planned for the Mistborn world, and these books are the next step in the continuity.  Plus, Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning are some of Brandon's best writing in my opinion.

SoS spoilers should be fine if they're marked, just BoM and secret history spoilers that we're being obsessive about.

I was also confused at first I was like: Wait what? There was something about Kel in Shadows for silence? I must need to reread that. :P

You've got some spoiler-free answers relating to question (1) and (3). I saw a spoiler-based answer to (2) above, but I think you probably want one that doesn't reveal too much.

You basically want to know what series of Brandon's are set in the same universe (The Cosmere) that aren't Mistborn. Other than the Stormlight Archive, you need to read closely to even spot the involvement of Shards in the rest of his series to date. These are, grouped by series:

  • Elantris, the bonus short story Hope of Elantris on Brandon's website, and The Emperor's soul. Elantris is Brandon's earliest work, so might be a little rougher around the edges than Mistborn.
  • Warbreaker, which is a full novel, and Brandon offers it for free on his website so people can try his work before buying it.
  • The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, which are the first two volumes of the Stormlight Archive. These books feature a plot that involves Shards in similar ways to the original Mistborn trilogy. They're also the most Cosmere-aware series that Brandon's published thus far, thus in my opinion, if you're going to read everything, you should read these last.
  • There's also a graphic novel expected sometime this year called White Sand, which Brandon gave over an unfinished version of his book White Sand in order to create. A bit uncertain on the timeframe for that one.
  • There are also two cosmere novellas set on worlds without Shards. These are Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell (I know, it's a long title) and Sixth of Dusk. They're interesting stories worth reading, and both have very small hints about a couple things going on in the larger Cosmere.
