Font is annoying (to me at least)

He seems a bit too owerpowered unless you go Astoria or Salem (in my opinion)

Ok. What part seems overpowered?

Secondary seems overpowered to me. Altgough maybe I was just reminded of steelheart and he is overpowered. So nevermind carry on. Also weaknesses should disable all powers I think.

I was thinking that it wouldn't disable his Secondary because it doesn't have a combat use. I'll think over tweaking that.

Thanks!

The Secondary. No one in the game has a Power like that, and the only canon one we know of is Steelheart (remember Regalia's was through active use of her main power, and not some secondary). The real reason it's OP, though, is that it's a major disruption to the game. A single use of the power would alter everything in the setting permanently, potentially ruining plot lines  in ways that render them unsalvageable.

Also, though, is that you can't have a weakness not negate all of your powers. You can have various degrees of your weakness do that (think of the Kool-Aid gal, whose powers were disrupted upon contact with the drink, but actively ingesting it cancelled her powers completely).

Ok. Also, it doesn't change the appearance or properties of the area--it just makes them superconductive. I'll see about how I can rework it though.

This doesn't work on clothes or other items someone is wearing right (secondary)?

Nope. Just the area.

Hello again! Changes are in red.

Name: Arge

Epic Name: ThunderSpear (Very epic, I know)

Primary: Can shoot a bolt of lightning, exploding on contact. Releases an electrical discharge, stunning the few people that survive the lightning and shorting out any electrical stuffz

Secondary: Increases speed to lightning fast for a short burst. From his perspective, time seems to slow down. (Just remember that this is a speed ability, not a temporal)

Passive(s): Immune to electric shock (dur); if he throws his spear, it will fly back; resilient skin (not impervious, but more like electrically charged gauss cannon then rocket launcher)

Weakness: Hint: It has legs

Effect of Weakness: All powers negated. Skin still partially resilient unless a weakness is fully exploited (will be explained to GMs)

Appearance:

  • Roughly middle height, around 5 ft 10. Long, curly rusty red hair (a very dark red, nearing brown) tied back in a ponytail. When it has been out of the ponytail for long enough, it reverts to massive ringlets (that’s just a fun fact—it’s never out for long enough  :P).
  • He has brown eyes, and slightly tanned skin.
  • He wears a slightly green wide-brimmed hat which can be buttoned up on the side to allow for a large rifle (though he usually doesn’t like shooting. And yes, the hat is actually naturally slightly green).
  • When incognito, he wears a dark, full-body trench coat. Otherwise, he wears a dark t-shirt, over which is a black jacket, and jeans.
  • On his left wrist there is a watch made with a special insulated metal which resemble stainless steel.
  • When he goes full epic mode, his eyes glow yellow, and he hovers in the air slightly (that is just a side effect of electrically charging the air around him—not a true power), though just an inch or two.

Personality:

Positive: When he tries, charismatic. Also highly ambitious, though that fits under both. Third is focus—if he decides he wants something, he doesn’t stop until he gets it

Negative: In addition to typical epic corruption, he is callous, though he doesn’t intentionally kill vanillas—he just doesn’t care about them. If he is attacked with anything stronger than a rocket launcher, he gets really, as in, really, angry. Third, easily distracted unless he is in his hyperfocus mode.

MO: Generally just floats (not literally) through an area, scoping it out for anything he wants. If he finds something he wants (assuming it is an object) he walks up and grabs it. If the person resists, he electrocutes them, then walks away. If they aren’t electrocuted, he pulls his spear out of its back sheath, then stabs them. All of this he does without showing any emotion. If the person is an epic (i.e., they didn’t die from his spear) he launches a lightning bolt at them. If they continue to say no, he goes full fight mode, takes the object, destroys the area, then leaves. If they actively resist, he reaches the fight stage sooner.

Example for Combat (NOTE: this is from a vanilla’s perspective until the fight)

The door to the burger house burst open, and a tall, well-tanned man walked in. “Epic,” I thought to myself. “Not again.”

He called out, “What is your best? Prepare one immediately.”

I replied, doing my best to stay calm, “Of course. Do you mind pickles?”

He smirked. “No.”

“Just a few minutes then,” I said, scurrying to the kitchen.

Suddenly, the whole room darkened. “Crud,” I said. Not aloud of course—I was technically under ShadowBreaths protection (he is going to be my next—you get a teaser here! Just remember that this is an example, and not cannon to the RP) and didn’t want to anger him.

“What are you doing here, puny epic?” he said—already his shadows were beginning to form around him.

“I just wanted a burger. Is that too much to ask? Oh, and I’m ThunderSpear. You would be…?” the Epic, who I now know as ThunderSpear, challenged.

Aloud, I mused, “ThunderSpear…where have I heard that before?” One of my cooks replied, “He stopped in at StrikeBurst’s place a few weeks back. Nothing was left.” (I might make StrikeBurst as well, but she’s further out. Or he, not sure XD)

“Oh.”

Meanwhile, ShadowBreath was replying, “A burger…that is fine. But here, you have to pay to get one. As for my name…I AM SHADOWBREATH.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Breath. Though I ask, why should I pay? Or do you have some sort of feeling for this establishment? It would be a shame if I had to destroy it.”

“As if you could...”

(3…2…1…FIGHT)

Shadows swarmed across the floor, sweeping towards ThunderSpear (TS). TS drew his spear and twirled it around him, small bolts of lightning striking around him, dispersing the shadows. TS thrust his spear towards ShadowBreath (SB—or SOB, sometimes  :P), releasing a massive bolt of explosive lightning. The bolt sent SB flying backwards, and before he could recover from the shock, TS was on him, stabbing again and again with his spear, never giving SB a chance to get up.

All of a sudden, he heard a sound, barely a breath, behind him. He spun around, barely blocking the sword strike that seemed to come from no-where. He shot forward, time seeming to slow down around him as he sliced and diced through SB.

The shadowed man fell to the ground in pieces.

“I would like that burger now,” ThunderSpear said, his eyes glowing.

“Of course. Just a moment while I prepare it.”

I think that this secondary is pretty reasonable. It's just for a couple seconds, and it fits his theme. Also re-writ weakness to apply to all powers.

Welcome to the RP, first off, the forum generally discourages double or triple posting, just edit any new stuff in to your last comment.

On the character I honestly think a speed secondary would probably make them a bit overpowered when combined with a lightning primary like that. As long as the range isn't at Steelheart levels personally I don't see the problem with the first Secondary power of causing materials to become conductive, we do have Epics capable of terraforming or drastically changing areas, some of the most memorable scenes in the RP were just that, the Funtimes/Lightwards/Nighthound fight, the raising of the museum, the panda attacks, more recently the Arsenal/Quicksilver battle.

Regalia, Steelheart, Obliteration and Nightwielder all had powers capable of effecting an entire city, as did Conflux arguably. Brandon even has a specific set of rules for those types of powers so I don't think they're all that rare in canon. Steel transmutation was also probably Steelhearts primary but there's not really a clear distinction between a primary and secondary, just switch the first two powers around so the lightnings the secondary and it works I'd say.

On weaknesses yeah that has to effect everything, although the notable exception is that weaknesses don't effect the powers of large-scale effects like Nightwielders sun-blocking or Steelhearts transmutation.

I think that this secondary is pretty reasonable. It's just for a couple seconds, and it fits his theme. Also re-writ weakness to apply to all powers.

On the secondary debate. I didn't really see anything wrong with making material conductive, except maybe that if the area is large enough he'd have a confirmed hit for everything on the ground, so I guess if you want to go with that power after all maybe do something similair to Steelhear's power where the AoE is tied to his emotions so he can't just create a kill zone at the start of the battle but his range increases together with the stress the fight puts on him.

On his passives, is there something special about his spear or does that power work on every object he throws, could he pierce himself by accident or others on purpose or does it just kind of float back to him? What about bullets?

I'd also appreciate a better measurment on how resiliant he is.

On the writing itself. In case you didn't just do it for the demonstration, I would like to see you to actually spell out characters names in game/text. Shortening them in discussion is of course fine.

Storms, I was just hit with a really good idea for an Epic. :o

Is there a place in Oregon currently that has an active Reckoners team?

Ok here are the powers of Codpin and Glacier-the 2 ice Epics of Salem.

Coldpin:

Cold infusion- Coldpin can infuse anything with cold as long as it meets these critreria- 1 cubicmeter in quantity, in solid state and not alive. When infusing an object he can change its temperature to anything between 0°C and -250°C. The temperature isn't altered by outside circumstances(fire, microwave, the sun). Infused objects have the consistency and hardness of glass. They also don't affect the temperature of air but do affect the temperature of solids or fluids they are touching. He can remove infusion at any time.

Frost pulse- He can fire frost blasts from the palms of his hands. These blasts freeze any water and fluids containing water(blood, juice, beer, etc. ). The width and travel distance of the blasts is chosen by Coldpin although the max radius is 0,25m and max distance is 5m.

Cold immunity: His blood, bone and flesh has no freezing temperature making him immune to cold.

Glacier:

Superstrength- He is superstrong.

Ice and Steam- He can alternate between two states. In the state called Ice he can use the power of Ice construction and has minor invulnerability. In the state called Steam he can use the powers Steam manipulation and regeneration.

Water pool: He has a set amount of water he can use for his Ice construction and Steam manipulation. The amount is 100 cubicmeters. Both of these powers don't actually change the the temperature of the water he is using.

Ice state.

Ice construction: While in Ice state his hands are made of ice. He can grow this ice into whatever shape he wants when he activates the Ice state. His constructs do however use his Water pool meaning he can only create Ice constructs with a quantity of 100 cubicmeters without refilling his water pool. His ice is harder the closer it is to his hands. His hands regenerate quickly while in this state.

Minor invulnerability: He has a very thin forcefield tight around his body when in Ice state. If hit it will block the damage and shatter. It is regenerated when he changes into Ice state again.

Steam state.

Steam shooting: When he enters Steam state he instantly turns all of his ice into steam that automatically flies toward him refilling his Water pool when it reaches him and is absorbed. He can also shoot water from his Water pool in the form of steam. The steam can be shot from his hands or feet at any speed up to the speed of sound and at any quantities.

Regeneration: He regenerates any minor wounds instantly when he enters the Steam state. He also regenerates faster when in Steam state.

Just putting this here in case someone missed it because I got far fewer questions and I'm beginning to doubt it was simply my explanatory skills. Wait a bit while I find the Glacier scene and write one for Coldpin.

Edit:Here's Glace

So for understandability purposes here is a short fight with Glacier and an Epic named Cloudpearl to demonstrate Glaciers powers.

Glacier was having a stroll along the various houses of Salem northern. Well actually he was patrolling, but since nothing had hapened yet he refered to it as a stroll. Ruler had told him to patrol though so it was best to call it a patrol when talking.

His thoughts on the various ways of walking were interupted by a gunshot in a nearby house. It was followed by a scream a shattering sound and a loud hiss. He ran towards the house sparing a look at his hands to check that he was in Ice state. He changed to Steam for a second blasting 10 cubicmeters of water in the form of steam from his feet propeling himself forward to the door of the house. Then he imedately(sorry forgot the correct spelling) changed back to Ice midair without waiting for the steam to catch up. As he changed Glacier formed one of his hands in the form of a hammer the size of a melon. It was however small compared to the broadsword in his other hand. 2 times taller than Glacier and 1 handlength wide it was his favorite weapon. As he reached the door of the house he brought down the blockhammer.

"That's a stupid name Icecube" he heard Ruler say within his head. Glacier agreed- he would refine it later.

Right now he was falling through a door and it looked like the blockhammer had performed it's purpose in absorbing the damge. His armor only had three small holes. Far better than when he had rammed a door with his shoulder a month ago.

As he landed he quickly assesed the situation. There was a man- an Epic judging by his loose golden robes inscribed with a cloud in a white circle. He was holding a gun- the source of the gunshot. Following the direction of the gun he saw a man in a light blue shirt and white undies lying on the ground with a bullet wound in his chest- the source of the scream and probably the owner of this house. As he searched for the source of the shattering sound he found it in the form of a few white bits of something with a cloud of white and hold color apearing alarmingly fast from the pieces.

"This is Cloudpearl- an epic with the power to create, control clouds and turn them into a white, hard substance and the other way around. He carries some pearls of this substance around with him. Hence the name. He might also have increased arm speed allowing him to fire and aim incredibly fast. So MOVE!" Ruler shouted in his head.

Glacier considered dodging but that would have been too slow. His decision was taken from him when a bullet hit his chest breaking the armor there. He charged moving to the side a bit so the next bullet didn't hit the same place as the first. In the fairly small house the 1 leap was enough to carry him within swinging distance. So he swung, but his blade was suddenly and rudely interupted by a white rod that had appeared out of the cloud and rammed its end into the floor. His blade hit the rod with an incredibly loud shattering sound as it's farest end broke off and flew into a wall. He hit his swordarm with the hammer leaving only a stump which quickly turned into a hand. He reached down ripping the rod out of the ground. He then changed to Steam state shooting 10 cubicmeters of steam at the rod throwing it out the window and far away. Glacier noticed he hadn't been shot once during this ordeal. He looked at Goldpearl to find him standing in white plate. The idiot hadn't made his faceplate yet. Glacier took the moment to expend all his steam at that smug face. Sadly it appeared there was face armor it was just really transperent. This didn't prevent the Epic from flying into and through a wall.

The force of the steam however also threw Glacier in the opposing wall. He stood up, healed his wounds and recovered all his water. He changed to Ice again this time turning one of his hands into a 10m spear and the other into a round shield of 3m in diameter. He stabbed with the spear as fast as he could while walking toward Cloudpearl. The spear broke with each thrust becoming shorter and shorter. When he reached his enemy, who was still trying to stand up and getting beaten down by the spear each time, he brought down the shield. There was a shattering sound as the shields bottom broke and Cloudpearls plate cracked. Glacier kept hitting with the shield. After 5 hits there was a sickening 'shplorg' sound as Glacier broke the chestplate and smashed flesh into pulp. He went to his knees and rammed the remains of his spear into Cloudpearls heart. He stood up and walked over to the owner of the house. He was spasming so Glacier broke his neck. He made it look like Cloudpearl though. He thought killing the man the best way nut Mouldbreaker might not agree.

Glacier walked outside and told a man- a boy really- to go to the police and call them over here. Glacier didn't have a radio because electronics didn't go well together with his steam.

All right, first, I had misunderstood the secondary. I thought you were turning things to some superconductive material, as in transmutation, which is apparently incorrect. If I understand you correctly, you just meant that the materials within range would become super conductive. My apologies.

As noted, I was under the impression that this secondary would actually transmute the matter as well, and my comments were made regarding that. No other character in canon other than Steelheart does large scale transmutation. As noted, since I misunderstood what was intended, my comments regarding the matter don't apply.

Could Coldpin's Frost Pulse just kill a person?

As for Galcier, how fluently can he change between his forms?

Posted (edited)

No. As long as it's a live human the powers will have a a diminished effect and even more so on an Epic. I am not sure of the exact amounts.

He has to wait 5 seconds between changes.

Edit:Also Coldpin's pulse is very effective on bleeding wounds as the blood around the wound isn't alive even if it's inside.

Storms, I was just hit with a really good idea for an Epic. :o

Is there a place in Oregon currently that has an active Reckoners team?

Nope. But they do travel so no reason they couldn't take up somewhere if needed. Portlands cell just got massacred though and they wouldn't be in the Dalles and Astoria is probably way too dangerous for any team other than Profs, so Corvallis or Salem I suppose would be the only options.

So I've been considering adding a secondary power to my epics Peacegiver and Night Terror. What I have in mind is pretty much this: The two of them can make a person enter a "dreamlike" state. When Peacegiver creates the illusion, the target perceives themself to be in a permanent state of bliss. They have everything they want, and initially don't realize what is going on. They can escape the trance by realizing what is going on, and escaping from it. Night Terror's illusion works in a similar way, except his victims are trapped in a nonstop nightmare, and can only escape by conquering that nightmare. What do you guys think of this?

Do the targets have to be asleep?

When the target is put into the trance, they don't necessarily have to be asleep, but it certainly helps. The more helpless the target is, the easier it is for them to be put into the trance. Being fatigued, distracted, or simply not in the right state of mind will enable them to be put into the trance easier.

OK. What I think I will do is switch the primary and secondary, with the new primary being the transmutation. I'm not sure yet if I'll make it permanent or not; what do you think? The new secondary will be his bolt of lightning; does that one seem fine, or should I reduce it's power a bit? (Also, do you have a standard rating for strength of powers? Or should I just describe as best as I can?) The transmutation can only happen when he is angry, as I had in his original example.

Also, just out of curiosity, how would the speed boost secondary and the lightning primary be really strong together?

And...panda attacks? I'm starting to like this place more...

Only effects his spear. It flies back to his hand, shaft-first. If it hits an obstacle, it goes around it until it reaches ThunderSpear. For resilience...let's see. Bullets, swords, etc. don't hurt him. Generic explosions can cause him to stumble, but don't actually harm him. However, attacks that are more energy based can harm him, such as the gauss rifle used in Steelheart. Epic abilities that are energy based hurt him, though not as much as they would a vanilla (as in, he isn't destroyed, but will probably be pretty banged up. Same for guns of that type). I'll add that in to his description. Was that helpful?

For the writing, I will write out names fully while in RP. That was just for demonstration purposes.

All right, first, I had misunderstood the secondary. I thought you were turning things to some superconductive material, as in transmutation, which is apparently incorrect. If I understand you correctly, you just meant that the materials within range would become super conductive. My apologies.

As noted, I was under the impression that this secondary would actually transmute the matter as well, and my comments were made regarding that. No other character in canon other than Steelheart does large scale transmutation. As noted, since I misunderstood what was intended, my comments regarding the matter don't apply.

That was my initial idea, but I realized as I was changing it to the speed boost that that didn't really make sense, and I forgot to write in that it didn't actually change the material. Thank you for looking over it, and pointing that out.

Thanks again, to all of you! I will update the original post soon, with the tweaks to powers and descriptions.

So, I used to live in Corvallis, and my character seems to fit there, so I was thinking of joining there. I'm just making sure this is okay. Right?

I was wondering how you put the pictures in the post, I can't figure out how to do it.

I've responded to your PM.  Also, have you read Corvallis?  I've stalked the city a lot on the internet, but have no actual experience, so any insight you can give regarding the set-up, layout, feel of the city would be much appreciated!

I hope Corvallis will come back to life soon... if not I will probably write another Summer post, as Argon is still waiting. I'm gonna make her find a kitten, and if you all won't start writing, Drainer will find out about this kitten... do I need to say more? :P

Me too!  That Legacy post is still coming eventually (sorry Edge, The Princess isn't speaking to me at the moment so I might just have to let the Kenshin convo end).  Let me know if anyone needs some NPC interaction and I'd be happy to provide.

Annoying thing about Mod powers: Being able to read hidden posts and wondering why people hid them since they seem to be perfectly fine.

Oh dear god, I'm turning into Lucentia, someone shoot me now before I start complaining about how long I'm going to have to wait for a coffee since I broke all the Baristas legs.

Unfortunately I'm sworn to secrecy, otherwise Chaos will get angry at me. :P

It does indeed and I feel confident in hiding superfluous stuff here even if I don't really want to use my mod-powers anywhere else in the forums much. Done.

Well, good and mischief. I do like leaving edit messages on peoples posts for no reason :P

Still that's a pretty far cry from Lucentia, I'm at MV levels of evil.

Just wait to you get to admin level of evil.  It's fun :).

I think Corvallis would be a great location for a Reckoners plot-line (especially if we had some interaction between them and the human rebellion).  The idea of Corvallis seems like something the Reckoners would want to disrupt, and there are a decent number of epics with PIs whose power range isn't too out of control for them to target.

One thing I'd like to say generally about the RP in general, and particularly about Astoria, is to keep in mind that just because epics might not have a good chance of surviving on their own, doesn't mean they need to be kept out of certain settings.  It might take more collaboration with the GM of the thread (in Astoria's case, Edgedancer), but you can put a less powered epic in, and then justify their survival by attaching them to a higher powered epic who already exists, or placing them in a non-combat role.  There are already lots of good examples of this in most of our threads, but I think it's important to remember when designing epics that even Salem (which is about a Colosseum) is more than just a showcase for epic fights.

Let me know if I missed any questions/comments that were directed my way!

Should work fine if it's permanent, though having it be long-lasting but still not permanent would probably be better for plot purposes.

I have a standard ranking for powers but that's just because I have a list of thousands of Epic ideas and I needed a way to rank them against each other, the RP doesn't have anything as a standard.

Speed and pretty much anything is strong but mostly because lightning is also near-instantaneous which leads to very effective ambushes and such, plus a few other reasons that I may one day reveal but are not good unless we want to drastically speed up the level of destroying cities :P

A power that requires people to conquer their nightmares in a setting where that is a very significant event, maybe not the best idea, similair problem with making someones dream world. Then of course there's still the whole "mind control isn't all that powerful in the verse" problem.

As Voidus says, we tend to keep power levels on a rule by thumb basis.

So, what happens if his spear breaks?

Don't worry about it. It was mostly in case you wanted to anyway.

Did you catch patar's pm?

Yes, and I have responded.

Also, Mestiv, regarding the lack of animals in Corvallis, is that something you work-shopped with Voidus?  If so, either Princess GOOD is an exception to that rule, or she and Cornucopia do not get along (which might be the case regardless).

But yeah, her parade of animals helping to keep the city clean kind of contradicts Summer's perception that wildlife is rare in Corvallis.
