Stormgate he/him Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 On Scadrial, Bronze Mistings can, with practice, determine what metal is being burned by the wavelength of the pulse. On Roshar, Lightweaving can apparently influence sound and light waves, and the Listeners Rhytms seem to play an important role in their society. On Sel, Raoden tries to understand some books that discuss something about measuring the wavelength of the Aons, or some such. Basically, waves play a large role in Invesiture, particularly in the different uses of Investiture in one magic system. Any thoughts? Any additions to this rough theory of the Cosmere would be invaluable. 2
Left he/him Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 One of the members wrote an incredibly detailed, fascinating, and very long paper *cough* theory about it. I don't remember what the name of the thread was, so hopefully that sharder will see this and get the link for you. 3
Voidus Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 There was a topic on the subject here, also here. But I seem to remember an even older topic being around back when I first joined the Shard, when a few of us started drawing parallels between Allomancy and AonDor. Can't seem to find it but it might be around somewhere. 2
Guest Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 This was about Cosmere String Theory, and was very detailed. If you go to Skaa's About Me page, he might have something (or quite a few things) to interest you.
skaa he/him Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 (edited) Thanks, Kipper! There was a topic on the subject here, also here. Can't seem to find it but it might be around somewhere. This one's from 2012.It might interest you to know that there is a quantum of Investiture, so something similar to a wave-particle duality (or perhaps fundamental vibrating strings ) might explain the wave-like manifestations of Investiture. Given your astounding ability to pull the exact thread I was thinking of out of thin air I can only possibly conclude that you are in fact a witch. Now excuse me while I go fetch my tinfoil hats. 4
Ari he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I really want to know what that quantum of Investiture is called, because all the names I come up with are silly.
Voidus Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I really want to know what that quantum of Investiture is called, because all the names I come up with are silly. Powerino? Investron? Yeah not coming up with anything.
Ari he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Powerino? Investron? Yeah not coming up with anything. The best I could think of was "Omegon", because it got added on to the end of ordinary physics.
Voidus Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Actually after trying several more, Adonalsion doesn't sound too horrible. 1
Eagle of the Forest Path he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Creatron? Because of the 'building blocks of creation'? (I thought about 'creat-ion', but that would become so confusing)
Ari he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Actually after trying several more, Adonalsion doesn't sound too horrible. True, but it sounds and looks so much like Adonalsium that that would get confusing!
Shardbearer he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Colors on Nalthis are also kind of a waveform. And Breaths give you perfect pitch, which seems a bit weird considering sound isn't important in awakening.
Eagle of the Forest Path he/him Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 ...considering sound isn't important in awakening. ummm, commands?
DreamEternal Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I really want to know what that quantum of Investiture is called, because all the names I come up with are silly. Skaa's L-String theory calls it L-Boson. 1
Ari he/him Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Skaa's L-String theory calls it L-Boson. Haha that gives me an idea: It should be called Sanderson's Boson.
skaa he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 (edited) Haha that gives me an idea: It should be called Sanderson's Boson. Sanderboson? LOL! We could call it that until Brandon gives us a name for it, but obviously that won't be the in-universe term. My own term for it, "L boson" (which is also unlikely to be the in-universe term), is patterned after the bosons that mediate the short range weak interactions: the W and Z bosons. I was thinking of how weak decay via W boson-emission/absorption changes the flavor/species of elementary particles, and this reminded me of the transformative effect of Investiture. Now, the weak interaction is actually just one of two aspects of the electroweak force, the other aspect being the electromagnetic force mediated by photons, which we equate with light. I imagined that the quantum of Investiture would have properties of both kinds of bosons: it would have the infinite range of photons and a W boson-like (though more magical) transformative effect. Imagine a light particle that magically transforms whatever it touches. This notion of a magical light particle, as well as my notion of a god-level Lightweaving (which is central to L-Theory) is what led me to name this quantum of Investiture the "L boson". Incidentally, Lightweaving is described as the manipulation of waveforms, which brings us back to this thread's topic of cosmere waves. Edited November 3, 2015 by skaa
