loganmathewjohnson Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Either way, I'll keep my eyes peeled. I remember it, slightly, and I'll have no problem PMing you when I find it.
Oudeis he/him Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I don't think Lirin does tell him that. I pretty sure Laral speaks to him about it and/or that the farmers kids (including Jost) speak about it. AHA. I finally found it. And... yes, it's far less conclusive than I had recalled. It's Kal telling Laral "My dad said this" and it's less the slam-dunk than I remember. In context, it's unclear if "Father says that doesn't happen very often" refers to a dark-eyes winning a Shardblade, or the Shardblade turning dark eyes light. Still, until we actually see it happen, I'm going to remain skeptical that it's simply "what happens".
hoser he/him Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 (edited) Chapter 16 Kindle p245 Laral: "Don't you want to become a lighteyes? Win a Shardblade?" Kal: "Father says that doesn't happen very often." ... Laral: "Kal, if you go to war and find a Shardblade, then you'd be a lighteyes ..." To which Kal doesn't disagree. It seems to me, in context, that the rarity is about winning the Shardblade, not the eye color change. Whatever the truth, these kids, one lighteyed, the other the son of an educated man don't doubt the eye color change. Edited January 3, 2014 by hoser
loganmathewjohnson Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I agree. I don't think that becoming a Lighteyes is a rare event upon finding a Shardblade... That kind of reads "Shiny Pokemon" to me, and doesn't make much sense. More likely, the rarity is in a Darkeyes actually OBTAINING a Shardblade...
Oudeis he/him Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just remaining skeptical until we see it happen or get some evidence that's not "the smartest two kids in a backwater town out in the sticks who have never seen a Shardblade before in their lives". I'm not saying I think for sure it isn't the case, all I'm saying is, a lot of people on the fora talk as though it's a foregone conclusion that we've seen explicitly proven, and it isn't. There's evidence, but nothing even close to proof.
loganmathewjohnson Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 That seems likely. As I've said, I have few memories left of the book... I'm not even sure of who says the quote in question! I do know that it is only mentioned once in the book, and seen nowhere else...
Oudeis he/him Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Just re-read the vision at Feverstone Keep, the day of Recreance. Dalinar watches scores if not hundreds of men pick up shardblades for the first time. Unfortunately, he says nothing about their eye color when he does so. It just occurred to me to wonder about the eye colors of the men from the start of the vision until they get the blades... I'll re-read it later and see if I can nail down whether-or-not their eyes were dark to begin with.
WhiskeyJackDaniels he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Getting back to the words, since each is based off of a parable from Nohadon's book, has anyone here tried to make a list of the stories from that book that we learn from Dalinar? We could try to pick out the morals of them and get the essence of what some more of the immortal words are.
Cromptj he/him Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Going back a few posts, the first ideal seams more like a general belief than an oath or vow which is what the others are. The two second ideals we have seen are both promises. I will...
