It wasn't failure. It was true failure, the knowledge that you didn't win and wouldn't win if you did something different, that you simply can't do it. It's like people deliberately scoring low on a test so that when they see their scores they can say "Sure, but I could have done better."

Talking about Sanderson's philosophy is entertaining.
