That's true, in a way. But in another way....wouldn't it have been even easier to simply hide the ability altogether? It would have saved her a lot of political heat, and she doesn't really need to Soulcast for any practical reason (other than learning and practice, which she could do in secret just as easily). It is possible that she had to use it in her defense so she came up the stories to hide what she can do. Also come on could you really hide that i would use it all the time.

Also come on could you really hide that i would use it all the time. I think if she had to use it in her defense publicly the story would have spread like wildfire, and it would be well-known. And why would she not be able to hide it? It's not like she needs anything she could soulcast, or couldn't explain another way for how she got it.

Gloom he/him Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 (edited) Jasnah hasn't been careful about keeping her soulcasting hidden, she's been careful about keeping the fact that she is a Soulcaster (Elsecaller) hidden. I find it unlikely that you can use a soulcaster fabrial to travel to Shadesmar. Yes, I know there are some people who believe otherwise, but I'm not one of them. The difference between hiding your Soulcasting, and hiding the fact that you are a Soulcaster is quite large. Jasnah is known to use soulcasters. Taravangian believed she was in possession of a soulcasting fabrial at practically the same moment that Jasnah was introduced to us. As far as we know, Shallan is the only one that knows that Jasnah is a Surgebinder, and she only discovered this because she stole Jasnahs fake Soulcaster, had experience with Shadesmar herself, and caught Jasnah Soulcasting when she was in possession of a fake fabrial. Since you bring it up though....it would be interesting to know how Soulcasting fabrials work (from the user's point of view, not how they're made). In the Interludes, one of the two old ardents jokes about people eating while visiting Shadesmar. My point is this: how do they know what Shadesmar is? With everything that's been lost since the days of the Radiants, I have a hard time believing it's based on ancient knowledge. Their joke sounded like going to Shadesmar was something that people still did, at least some people. And we don't know of any other fabrials that allow access to Shadesmar. So....maybe the Soulcasters do?
Gloom he/him Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I don't know, the ardentia isn't exactly clueless about realmatics and the history of Roshar. Yes, a lot has been lost or obscured, but Kabsal seemed to have quite a bit of knowledge. I believe that belief in the three realms is part of the Vorin religion. If this is true, then I don't see why they wouldn't know about Shadesmar or the spiritual realm.
Meg Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Jasnah has records of when she arrives and leaves at a port, and she has been very good at keeping her Soulcasting hidden, so I doubt she's been using Transportation (though I'm sure she wishes she could). I admit that I didn't read the posts following to my quote very intensively but I wanted to say: Why are "you" sure she already knows of her Transportation ability?

She uses it to do a ranged Soulcasting (potentially) so I am willing to guess she knows at least one use of the Surge. She's also had a spren much longer than most Surgebinders we've come across, and it seems that the spren have some idea of what powers their Radiants have. Jasnah is also aware that each Radiant Order's powers came from the spren, and she knows that two Orders had innate Soulcasting, so I assume she's read up enough to know that the Lightweavers/Elsecallers shared one Surge and had a second different Surge. Given that, I think she's at least aware she can do more than Soulcast.
