The top one gives credit to (and links to) the bottom one, giving credit. What does the symbol mean? It looks almost but not quite like lerasium...

Yes, I couldn't see which one came first. I can't actually access DevArt while I'm on campus. It's blocked by my school's webfilters, so I just copied and pasted the blocked links to the source and hoped I was matching them correctly! I don't think it's an actual symbol from the books, but it does seem slightly Lerasi-esque.

I'm ashamed to say I don't know the Steel Alphabet very well... can anyone direct me to somewhere on the internet I can get a good look at what the various symbols mean, allomantically, feruchemically, and phonetically?

There has been a lot of discussion about the Steel Alphabet on the forums, I think this thread is a good place to start.  As for the allomantic/feruchemical meanings I would suggest the coppermind.  The pages for the metals all have their associated symbols. (Note to self though, improve the actual Steel Alphabet page)

Shard of Acquisition.  Turns out the Ferengi are part of the cosmere.  Seriously though, I think this one has potential.

Going to have to disagree with you here, the Ferengi were the worst part of DS9 and if every Quark episode was removed I would have enjoyed the series much more. They were crude caricatures of capitalism, and I just wish they never existed because they tarnished the bittersweet wonderfulness that was DS9 to me. DS9 remains the best Star Trek, but it could have been so much better.

Shard of love - your magic can only affect those you care about. Only way to actually combat with it is to "love thine enemy".

Shard of Filth.

To prevent those upstart hygienists from preventing the barbarians from wreaking havoc with magic.

I'd like express a fear I've been nurturing for some time now in regards to unknown shards.

We've got Odium...what if there was Love and it was the key to defeating Odium? Or maybe combining Devotion and another Shard would create Love. I'd hate that.

I'd hate it so bad.

But no. There's no way someone as innovative in the fantasy genre as Brandon Sanderson is could fall victim to a [expletive] cliche like that, is there?

As an aside, my fears are generally either very boring or outrageous. Here are some examples:

Being trapped in an underground cavern where the only exit is an underwater tunnel of unknown length. Think about it. Once you pass the halfway point and there's no turning back...you don't know if you have 10 feet left to go or a quarter mile.

Being slowly crushed by enormous gears that cannot be stopped.

Disappointing my wife.

Being separated from my spaceship as I'm making repairs, in orbit, and drifting away from it at an excruciatingly slow speed.

Having a child with a disability.

Alaxel, I have edited out that political opinion you put in your post. It is irrelevant to the topic at hand, and has a high chance of causing off topic flaming with people who disagree with you. I would ask everyone to save potentially inflammatory political or religious opinions for dedicated topics on the subject, if they are ever to exist. (Those serious topics would be heavily moderated.)

This goes for everyone: not everyone sees the world in the same way as you do, and that's okay. Hyperbole, or inflammatory opinions get nasty quick, and we want 17th Shard to be a pleasant place to discuss things. Those sorts of opinions will be moderated heavily, from any side of the political spectrum.

I will be very strict in this.

Inspiration and Aspiration, twin shards that have invested on a planet.

Those invested with Inspiration are more creative, dreamers of ideas. The ones with Aspiration are driven to achieve goals by whatever means they can.

And if a document Inspiring FTL travel fell into the hands of someone with Aspirations, well...

It's almost too bad that we've already got a magic system based around "breath" because the linguistics geek in me finds it all too beautiful that both of those words come from the "spir"="breath" root and that would just be the coolest magic system ever.

Shard of Sarcasm--power to confuse and demean an enemy, leaving them frustrated and impotent.

Shard of Apathy--the bearer has immense power but just doesn't see the point in using it.

Shard of Agelessness--redundant since having a shard makes you immortal

Shard of Time--only works when locked in a blue box.

Shard of Cynicism--as if that shard even exists!

Shard of Skepticism--you spend eternity doubting your own existence.

Shard of Hope/Faith--power to inspire others while remaining unseen, hidden--actually Brandon might intend to have one like this.
