Herald he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 I just know that both are set in the same world, Sel. Can anyone clarify (without spoilers of course) if Emperor's Soul can be read before Elantris? Or if reading Elantris before Emperor's Soul would be much more enjoyable and gives a better experience? (may be due to the world-building or due to any subtle hints, if any?)
natc Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 It doesn't really matter in the end, being isolated events in different regions. No overlap of magic either. Go ahead. 2
Left he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Yes, you can do so. I can't really think of a single reason why not to.
Haelbarde he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 (edited) I do not believe any of the people, places, or events of Elantris are mentioned or referred to in Emperor's Soul. What I'd do is read both when you can, and then find and read KChan's theory on how the magic systems work. Edited September 13, 2015 by Haelbarde
WeiryWriter he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Yeah it's totally safe to read TES before Elantris. There are a couple of easter eggs, but they're really very minor on the grand scale of things.

But I recommend reading Elantris first, because it comes 1st in the timeline.
Herald he/him Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Thanks for all the feedback. I finished The Emperor's Soul and it was just fantastic!! Now I'm very eager to read Elantris right away
Lazarus52980 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 For me, the hardest thing about Elantris was the names...
Yata he/him Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 For me, the hardest thing about Elantris was the names... Quite true indeed. For me, reading the list of Aon (at the end of the book) with its meaning. It help me a lot to remember. Because a lot of word aren't easy to remember by its "Aonic's legacy".
Landis963 he/him Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) For me, the hardest thing about Elantris was the names... Especially with the Brandon-penned pronunciation rules regarding Aons and Aon-derived names (e.g. Raoden is "Rayo-den"), especially when he'd apparently forgotten that this makes basically every name besides Rayoden and Sareenee really awkward. (Add-Eye-Een I'm looking at you). EDIT: Yes, I know he doesn't quite care about how the audience pronounces his character names. It's just the sticklers in the audience, such as myself, who do. mallamp Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) Yeah it's totally safe to read TES before Elantris. There are a couple of easter eggs, but they're really very minor on the grand scale of things. I read Emperors Soul before Elantris and I got the easter eggs and connections afterwards, while reading Elantris.. It's rewarding that way too, and it also made me want to re-read Emperors Soul, which I rarely want to do, even with Sanderson. Edited September 27, 2015 by mallamp
