Kobold is a terrible fan.

:(

In my defense, I'm fiercely devoted to the fandoms I'm a part of. I just don't pay much attention to the ones I don't particularly care for.

Doctor Who: "I skipped Nine"

No. Just no.

"I skipped Nine."

    "You like strychnine?"

"What?"

    "What?"

And here I was going to go off on a mini-rant about how watching Nine is what enables you to really understand and appreciate Ten and Eleven, but your response is much more eloquent.:P

Well, mentioning the Percy Jackson movies causes my brother to rant almost reflexively.

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED.

Hmph. <_<

And then there are those people who skip Ten and you just want to...

Edit: I love how everyone in this thread is united by hatred. :)

I thought of another one. This one truly grinds my gears.

Telling me you're a Pokemon fan.

But you haven't played since Gen II.

And you think all the Pokemon that have been created since then are "trash," "stupid," and/or "a waste."

...So then you're not a Pokemon fan, you used to be.

Disclaimer: I really don't mind when people tell me they dislike the newer Pokemon. I very nearly disavowed Gen V myself. And of course, enjoying the older games is fine. But don't insult the newer games when you haven't played them, or even given them a chance. And don't be hypocritical about the Pokemon. Saying "It's just three ice cream cones put together!" is not a good argument when Magneton, a Gen I Pokemon, was just three Magnemites, or Dodrio was just a Doduo with an extra head. Saying "It's just a pile of trash, they couldn't think of anything better?" is not valid when Gen I had Grimer and Muk, literally just globs of ooze.

Edit: Disclaimer 2: Being a fan of the original games, while having given the newer games a try and deciding you dislike them, is completely different than what I was trying to describe above. Sorry for any confusion/frustration/irritation.

...So then you're not a Pokemon fan, you used to be.

I consider myself a casual Pokemon fan. I owned one guidebook with the first 151 Pokemon, I watched the anime, and I played exactly one of the games. (Pokemon Colosseum, if you're curious.)

I don't think anyone can really define what a true "fan" is, or where being a fan ends. Not liking later installments in a franchise, especially if those installments hail from different creative minds, does not revoke anyone's fan status. Take Star Trek--I despise the new J. J. Abrams movies, but I adore Deep Space Nine with a passion I can scarcely put in words. Would you say that I used to be a Star Trek fan but am no longer? Must I love every single product with the Star Trek or Pokemon labels on it just to keep calling myself a fan?

I firmly believe in not attacking a work until I've tried it, but saying that these people aren't true fans any more is a slippery slope into the condescending elitism that dominates the realms of Reddit and comic book shops. Instead of arguing endlessly about whether Magneton's more innovative than Vanilluxe, why can't both sides just accept that different fans can like different aspects of the work, and try to find and delight in elements that they both enjoy?

P.S.

I would say that makes you a true fan ;)

To continue along those lines, I have a huge problem getting into New Who. I grew up on classic Who, own The Key to Time and other disparate story lines... but I can not get into the New Who after Rose left. I think that the stories are way too convoluted and not as fun, and some of the fan favorites I just don't get (I mean, Weeping Angels? Bleh... just take a quantum hammer to them all ready <_< ).

Of course, I do try not to grouse about it too much... bashing one's favorite series (however much it's in bad taste ;) ) is bad form. I just do not participate in the new fandom and think how ironic it is that I grew up wishing more people would know and love Doctor Who and now that has happened I'm still not happy about it B)

As usual I agree with everything you've said. I added the disclaimer to communicate this with the "But you haven't played since Gen II" line, though it seems to have been a failed tactic. Whoops.

And Vanillux isn't that bad. Doesn't hold a candle to Magneton, of course, but most Ice types seem bad compared to Steel types.

The Percy Jackson movies does not exist. Period. Period

Calling Hide useless. No. Don't. You come into my house? (Unless of course you've only watched the anime and not read the manga then I forgive you.)

Hating on a character because they get in the way of your OTP. Kay, how about we not do that? That's shallow, annoying, and causes way too many shipwars.

And the worst? Anime is for kids. Yeaaah, I can give you an entire list of why's that absolutely wrong.

Saying MLP is just for little kids. Saying that all bronies are just a bunch of autistic **** who should just go and off themselves, because they're all a disgrace to man kind. Especially sense that also insults me as an aspie.

"Oh my gosh, Inside Out was incredible! Pixar just keeps getting better and better."

"I think it's cute that you still like kids' movies."

Even though most Pixar movies have more psychological and emotional depth, better characterization, and more original stories than most adult movies. <_<

"Interstellar was lame and totally unscientific"

....sigh.... I don't even..... I feel bad for you.

Also, I totally skipped first season of Who. Just didn't like it. I also stopped after finishing the second season, so really, Who just isn't for me.
