So here I am, ready to join you and talk about my favourite author with you guys ! My name is Margot and I'm French, so beware, my English may not be great ! I am nineteen, and a fan of Brandon Sanderson's work since I picked up Elantris in my local library 5 years ago, even though the Mistborn trilogy is what made me truly fall in love. I also liked Rithmatist and Legion. And The Way of Kings has been on my bookshelf for a reaaally long time but I've never got around to starting it (mainly because it is in English, and when I bought it I didn't understand it well enough to enjoy it). Well, apart from all that, I love mangas, fantasy (such as the Farseer Trology) and French Sci Fi, period novels, ... I'm also a huge Morrowind and Skyrim player. And I love Youtube adaptations. No I don't mind at all I will start by your second question, because it is the easier : 2) Well, it is not that I dislike Oblivion, but I was so different from Morrowind, the environnement was so much more classical than the landscapes in Morrowind ! I did not get caught up in it the way I did in Morrowind. And I bought it in English to have all the extensions, so there was a lot of things I didn't understand, both in game and as regards the gameplay. But I plan on giving it another shot soon 1) Love this question ! It's gonna be a bit tricky but I'll go my best. - I pronunce Vin like "veen" even though vin exists as a word in French, meaning wine, and is pronunced [vɛ̃] (I had to go look for the phonetical symbol because this sound doesn't exist in English). - I pronunce Venture the French way, which is [vɑ̃tyʁ] (almost none of these sounds exist in English either) - Elend, Kelsier, Marsh, Dockson... I pronunce them all as in English, I think, but with a French accent, if it makes sense. - Ham is Am (Fleur Delacour style) (even in French, they tried to give her a French accent, which was a bit confusing) - Sazed is [sazɛd] There are also several characters who don't have the same name in English and in French, especially the ones with nicknames : - Breeze becomes Brise, and the pronunciation is the same, except for the "r" - Clubs becomes Clampin ( [klɑ̃pɛ̃] ) - Spook becomes Spectre ( [spɛktʁ] ) That was interesting ! The question came up because I know another French person who read mistborn, they claim that hearing me say the names really confused them. (Fleur Delacour style) (even in French, they tried to give her a French accent, which was a bit confusing) This made me laugh far more than it should have because I misread that, and am now imagining Ham speaking like Fleur. Out of curiosity, what do you know about the Cosmere in general? Do you know why we're the 17th Shard? A lot of people find there way here because of Hoid... Technically, according to WoB, the names in Mistborn are supposed to be French sounding. For example, Kelsier in-world is pronounced "Kell-see-ay". I've never pictured Elantris's and Mistborn's worlds as being linked. I researched it a bit, and found out about Hoid, but I have no memory of him. So I'm a bit lost between all of that ! (I feel like such an outsider... ^^' ) (sorry but what is WoB ?) Oh really ? That's funny, I would never have imagined that ! These names don't really seem French, even though Kelsier as "Kell-see-ay" does have a ring to it ! It's a term that refers to anything story-related that Brandon said outside of the books (like in interviews, or on his website, or on Twitter, and so on). Some of us here (included me) obsess about knowing as many WoBs as possible, wielding them as weapons in our many theory discussions, but I suspect it might be better for your health not to worry about them too much. Spook the Mistborn Posted August 28, 2015 Report Share Posted August 28, 2015 So I know I'm really late on this and this will probably not get a response since my love for Brandon Sanderson is fairly recent. I am newcomer to Brandon Sanderson also and in the past month have read the Mistborn trilogy and the Reckoners series. I plan to read Warbreaker next and have just finished Alloy of Law (I can't wait for Shadows of Self). I absolutely loved following Wax and Wayne's story in Alloy of Law but I just have one (probably very stupid) question that I feel wasn't given enough attention in the epilogue. Could someone explain more about th insurance fraud thing with Edward Ladrian and the Set. What exactly was it for? Did The Set take up the shares of House Tekiel and claim insurance for stolen things to gain funding for The Set?
