Voidus Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I'd generally agree with you but the problem with the case of complete invulnerability like this is that it's an absolute you can't really divide into active or not active, it just is. For example it's constantly protecting him from lack of nutrition, UV-radiation and sickness in general, that's constant activity right there. Healing does all the same things, plus we've already seen gradations of invulnerability, some just have really thick skin whereas Steelheart had full on immutability, he couldn't be damaged in any way.
Edgedancer he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Healing does all the same things, plus we've already seen gradations of invulnerability, some just have really thick skin whereas Steelheart had full on immutability, he couldn't be damaged in any way. Again, how does that apply to Mathew the Epic at hand, who has complete immunity to any kind of harm, or Prof, who actively isn't using his powers?
Voidus Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Again, how does that apply to Mathew the Epic at hand, who has complete immunity to any kind of harm, or Prof, who actively isn't using his powers? It shows that if Prof can then Matthew can too.
Blackhoof Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Well if we go with "invulnerability is only being used when it prevents damage", then tiny amounts of prevention like those you say would barely register. Only serious prevented damage would cause serious corruption. We've seen Prof and Megan use small amounts of their power without going bad, and "background damage" pee say would trigger even less corruption as it is such a trivial amount if power.
Mestiv he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Again, how does that apply to Mathew the Epic at hand, who has complete immunity to any kind of harm, or Prof, who actively isn't using his powers? Well, I doesn't any more, because I dropped the idea of him trying to stay a good person Back to his weakness and Voidus idea of "greatest enemy". For me, that is just as vague and specific at the same time as the "deeply rooted hate". For me there is an analogy, that would make this "greatest enemy" weakness just as invalid as the former one. He can be hurt by someone who considers him an enemy == He can be hurt by someone who hates him. He can be hurt by someone who considers him the greatest enemy == He can be hurt by someone who deeply hates him. That addition of "greatest" part seems like adding second rule that Edgedancer wants to avoid. Also, during a 1 on 1 fight, he would almost instantly became the greatest enemy of his rival, even if just for a few minutes. I'm not sure we'll be able to come to a conclusion about his weakness. For me, it has one part, the deep hate, for Edgedancer it has two parts, the hate and the deepness. I'd like to propose we leave it as it is for now. Matthew will most likely be killed by someone who doesn't realize what his weakness is anyway, just in a desperate attack filled with hate and rage. I think that current weakness makes a good balance between how powerful Matthew is and how actually easy it may be to kill him. From what I have read, others like this as well, we just can't settle down on those little details that are rather unimportant for the story we'll write
Voidus Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I think Edge's issue was how you would differentiate hatred from 'deeply rooted' hatred, they're on a scale and so the exact boundary is a little unclear whereas considering someone your greatest enemy is a clearcut situation. Not trying to push my idea onto your character but just explaining my reasoning a bit more. Also because I forgot to mention it, love the character! 1
Mestiv he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Don't worry Voidus, I didn't feel like you were trying to change him Everyone here had some valuable suggestions and ideas that ultimately made Matthew more interesting... Now I hope I'll be able to write him some interesting story So I have a question: In the beginning of the Corvillas thread we see the greeting procedure of new Vanillas and Epics, but this happens already inside the bubble. How does the procedure of letting people in look like? Is there any preselection or anyone can enter once in a while and then there are interviews etc.
Edgedancer he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 It shows that if Prof can then Matthew can too. Sure, if we create the same situation and have him (or someone with the same power) supress his powers it could work. I don't think that was ever up to debate. Well if we go with "invulnerability is only being used when it prevents damage", then tiny amounts of prevention like those you say would barely register. Only serious prevented damage would cause serious corruption. We've seen Prof and Megan use small amounts of their power without going bad, and "background damage" pee say would trigger even less corruption as it is such a trivial amount if power. On its own that wouldn't be much but it is enough that he'd already be gone by the time he may possibly notice anything about the corruption, plus it's would make the residing of corruption somewhere between extremly hard to immpossible. I think Edge's issue was how you would differentiate hatred from 'deeply rooted' hatred, they're on a scale and so the exact boundary is a little unclear whereas considering someone your greatest enemy is a clearcut situation. Not trying to push my idea onto your character but just explaining my reasoning a bit more. Also because I forgot to mention it, love the character! That's pretty much it. It just cuts out technicalities and reduces it to an ultimate result. I supposse it could be cut down to just "enemy" instead of biggest enemy to make it easier to trigger. Who wouldn't love the concept of a Cakeinator?
Mestiv he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Who wouldn't love the concept of a Cakeinator? Probably someone with diabetes I think that Matthew might want to not have an epic name. That way he would seem less dangerous to those big epics with super scary names and at least a bit more friendly to Vanillas.

I was going to suggest that he constantly change his name so that any time he snaps and does cause violence it's not pinned to him in the future.

Voidus Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Is this finally the arrival of Calamaty's cupcakes, at least for a while? We can always hope
Blackhoof Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Probably someone with diabetes I think that Matthew might want to not have an epic name. That way he would seem less dangerous to those big epics with super scary names and at least a bit more friendly to Vanillas. I think not having a name would make him stand out more and make people and Epics more suspicious of him if he is trying to lay low. and in terms of canon, there seems to be a suggestion that taking a name is almost a compulsion for Epics, representing an arrogant rejection of their humanity and former lives/identities, as well as helping to hide their pre-Epic identities and obscure possible clues as to their weakness.
Mestiv he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 So it seems, that there has to be a name... damnation, I hate this part of character creation, always the hardest Maybe name after one of the noble gases, as they don't react with anything at all, just like he doesn't react thanks to his invulnerability... Radon, Xenon or Argon?
Blackhoof Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 ooh I like that. People would not really "get" his name unless they know noble gasses, and it is not overtly threatening. Even if they get his meaning, it is not threatening. Radon seems cool.
Mestiv he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 There are also Helium, Neon and Krypton but: - Helium is too well known and suggests that he'll have funny voice - Neon makes people think that he will glow or something like that - Krypton suggests that he is related to Superman... I personally prefer Argon, but I'll wait for others opinion. Cakeinator is always an option ^^

Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I like Cakeinator. It has a nice ring to it.
Blaze1616 he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 To try to remember the posts I wanted to reply to, Salem would definitely be a good place for a Vanilla who thought he was an Epic, Soulcasters primary goal is to find amusement wherever he can and as was mentioned Salem does have a psychiatric hospital so it's certainly plausible. He might even be allowed into the Arena sometimes and bestowed with invisibility to foster his beliefs further. I don't want to double up on an idea already present in a thread, and it sounds like there's already a not-Epic-Epic in Salem?
Voidus Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I don't want to double up on an idea already present in a thread, and it sounds like there's already a not-Epic-Epic in Salem? Metronome? It's not specifically canon that he is or isn't an Epic or even that he's in Salem, I threw in a vague mention to him in one post but it could easily be considered a rumor. Metronome is far too awesome to ever have a canonical appearance
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I have just finished reading the Dalles thread. Took me long enough.
Kobold King he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I have just finished reading the Dalles thread. Took me long enough. Who's your favorite character?
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 Arsenal. I'll bet that... ...well... Is brightening Arsenal's day even possible? 2
Kobold King he/him Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Arsenal. Well. First off, glad you enjoy his posts, and second of all, your response is unusual enough that I had to make it into a meme. What specifically do you like about him? 4
