Theory: The Purelaker Religion is related to Trelagism

As I was reading Ishikk's interlude in The Way of kings I couldn't help but notice that the Purelaker religion is at once both similar to Trelagism and its opposite.  First let's look at Sazed's desciption of Trelagism from page 178 of Mistborn: The Final Empire:

It is called ‘Trelagism,’ after the god Trell. Trell was worshipped

by a group known as the Nelazan, a people who lived far to
the north. In their land, the day and night cycle was very odd.
During some months of the year, it was dark for most of the
day. During the summer, however, it only grew dark for a few
hours at a time.
“The Nelazan believed that there was beauty in darkness,
and that the daylight was more profane. They saw the stars as
the Thousand Eyes of Trell watching them. The sun was the
single, jealous eye of Trell’s brother, Nalt. Since Nalt only
had one eye, he made it blaze brightly to outshine his brother.
The Nelazan, however, were not impressed, and preferred to
worship the quiet Trell, who watched over them even when
Nalt obscured the sky.”

Now for simplicity's sake I'll point out the important part of this desciption:

  • The Nelazan believed that there was beauty in darkness, and that the daylight was more profane.
  • Trell had a jealous brother named Nalt who was the Sun.

Now we turn to Ishikk's Interlude, specifically page 170 of The way of Kings:

Foreigners were so stupid.  Of course Nu Ralik was their god, but you always pretended he wasn't.  Vun Malak- his younger, spiteful brother- had to be tricked into thinking you worshipped him otherwise he'd get jealous.

Purlakers chull seen in the interlude swear by the sun and tide, even in thought, soo it seems the sun might be sacred to them in some capicity.  Maib also uttered the curse "Vun Malak eye you." to Ishikk.

so the similaries are as thus:

  • We haave two brother gods, and one is jealous of the other.
  • A mention of eyess in both religions.  In Trelagism the stars and Sun were Trell and Nalt's eyes respectively.  In the Purelaker religin we have a curse about the jalous god eyeying you.
  • The weakst evidentce Nalt and Nu Ralik both start with N.

The differences are:

  • Trelgism venerates the night while the Purelakers thus far seen to hold the sun as sacred to some degree.
  • Purelakers try to appease their jealos god, Trelagists don't.

i'm probably otherthinking things here as they're on different worlds but it all the similarities and difference make it seem like the Purelaker religion is a direct counterpooint to Trelagism.

I could have sworn that I've seen this theory before, but I can't find it, so congrats for that.

There is a similar similarity between religions in Warbreaker and the Mistborn trilogy, prompting Brandon to reply that he both copies over religions when he feels like it and that there are "shadows" of ideas that transcend individual worlds. So Treligism/Purelaker religion might share have such a Realmatically-justified position relationship.

That's kind of scary actually.  If Trelagism is somehow realmatically justified, it makes you wonder what exactly Miles knew and who was talking to him.

I didn't necessarily mean "justified" in the "definitely true" sense, but more so that their similarity is due to one influencing the other or both being descended from the same source, in-world, instead of just Brandon running out of ideas. Looking at my post, I phrased myself very poorly.

Eh, that makes sense.  It's a lot like the nd of Mistborn , none of the religions were true but all had truth in them somwhere.  Although, off the wall here, could it be about Adonalsium and whatever force opposed it?
