Oudeis he/him Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Just about done with my mistcloak. Trying to think of how to do a basic photo shoot. I live in an urban setting and in my ten years in this city I've seen fog maybe twice, so not a viable option. Apart from mist, any ideas people might have on how to do a decent shot? I'm prolly just gonna end up doing it in my house and ignore the anachronistic background, since I don't think I can easily replicate any natural Mistborn setting. No ballrooms, no towering mansions, no carriages, no spikeways I can fly 20 feet over... 1
Guest Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 The Mist is pretty thick some days, so I think a fog machine could get pretty close to the right effect. Might require you to play with the controls for a bit. And Voidus' idea of Rooftops is good, so long as you have good balance.
Oudeis he/him Posted June 5, 2015 Author Posted June 5, 2015 I'm looking into things that look like they are high up even if they aren't. Like, maybe on someone's roof there's a ledge thing a few feet above the ground, so I can crouch on the edge of that and if the angle is shot the right way it'll look like I'm crouching over a void instead of a pile of pillows. I don't think I'm committed enough to buy/rent a fog machine for a single photoshoot.
kaellok he/him Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Go the old-fashioned route--take a picture, and then do a poor job photo-shopping it into a mist-covered city!
firstRainbowRose she/her Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 By way of creating a mist like environment, find a very large backyard with a fire-pit and throw a lot of water onto the fire with a fan blowing in the correct direction. This gives you vapor in the air, as well as awesome windswept tassels for your cloak. 2
Oudeis he/him Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 Huh. My cousin lives on a lake that has intermittent but ENORMOUS amounts of fog. I had planned to go there someday and roll the dice on a misty morning, but if that fails, he also has an enormous backyard and a firepit. This could work... The costume is almost entirely done. I am not going to hem every tassel, so I just need to go over them all one-by-one and trim off all the loose threads. Also, I have a clear vial (too large, but what are you gonna do) for my mistborn vial. I found that coarse ground pepper makes for excellent flakes of a variety of good colors and shades, with two drawbacks. They obviously look non-metallic, but more importantly something in pepper leeches into the water of the vial and stains it amber. I could just claim that it's in whiskey like Wax's, rather than the standard alcohol solution. Surely someone in the Final Empire also decided to use better quality spirits. Has anyone here experimented with other sediments to make home-made Misting vials? I would value your input. I could get actual metal shavings somehow, but it seems like a hassle to get enough different types, and I'd like something I actually could swallow in a pinch if the moment called for it (I'm not sanguine on trusting swallowing actual shavings of metal). My Sharder friend will be back in town in about a week and I'm hoping he'll be willing to do a photoshoot with me. I'm certain other friends of mine who aren't quite as devoted would be willing to help, but I'd like the input of a real Sharder. I'll post some pics, if I'm not being too forward, in about a week, if people have advice. There's also a very small local convention, just starting this year, for sci-fi and fantasy literature. This costume turned out well enough, I'm actually considering entering my first cosplay contest.
Kaymyth she/her Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 You could try crushing up some edible metallic-colored sugar beads. I don't know exactly how they'd look dissolved in water, though. Experimentation would be required. You must do it! For Science!
Guest Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Shaved orange/lemon peel soaked in the right mix of food coloring could look like brass/tin/copper shavings
Guest Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Came across this thanks to Google... never used it myself, so I dunno if it'd dissolve in water/alcohol. http://m.windsorcakecraft.co.uk/rainbow_dust_metallic_food_paint.html
Tellingdwar he/him Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I've only done Terrisman cosplays myself, but my friends and I have worked on some of the accessories for a Mistborn. Better vials are easy. Many crafts stores carry them, or search amazon for "apothecary vials." For real metal flakes go to a place where they cut keys and ask for the shavings. These tend to be mostly brass, though. Could probably get other metals at a college that has a machining class. Still haven't solved the issue of making edible metal vials, but with multiple vials a little sleight of hand can go a long way. 1
Oudeis he/him Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 From your profile picture, AMAZING Terris cosplay. Thank you, everyone, for the advice! 1
Oudeis he/him Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Didn't turn out too shabby, I clearly need to work on how the tassels hang... 2
Guest Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 I've always pictures the tassels as much denser. More like a cape that was given a once-over with a razor-sharp rake than anything else. (That may just be me imagining things, like how I used to think Spheres are golf-ball size)
Oudeis he/him Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Denser like each tassel wider, or more tassels? In fact one thing I learned from this photoshoot is that I need to be more careful how I display the tassels; there are many more that you can't see because of how I'm posed. And thank you for noticing the bare feet! You can't actually see that all my weight is on my hidden foot, which is shod. That part I think I got right, and it gives me a warm glow to see that someone noticed.
Guest Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 More. Many, many more. From what I can see the thickness is fine. http://th09.deviantart.net/fs45/PRE/f/2009/137/9/5/Mistborn___Vin_II_v_2_by_Inkthinker.jpg Maybe a fan/windy night to help show them off?
Oudeis he/him Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 I in fact did take one cloak's worth of material and simply cut it into strips; there's a quote I'll try to find where Mr. Sanderson describes the sort of cloak he envisioned, and he said it would be 1.5x density, so I have about 2/3 the tassels I should. he did say about an inch and a half width, so I got that right. I have material of a different grey, and I'm thinking of adding more tassels like that, unless I choose to just start from scratch and use the other material to make a whole new cloak.
Guest Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Like I said, my imagination might just have taken a left-turn from reality. If that's his description and you like it then I'm wrong. *BUT* in my mind that image I posted is the right number of tassels (though a bit longer than would be realistic)
Oudeis he/him Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 I didn't mean to imply that you're wrong, I'm just saying that there are, in fact, more tassels in the cloak than is immediately apparent from the picture you can see. And also I do plan to add even more tassels at some point. Basically I'm saying that I think you're right. I didn't actually count Inkthinker's picture but that looks like a good number to me. There are also more pics in the Cosplay Gallery of this site, which might show off the tassels better. And also one of me posing with TenSoon.
Guest Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 And thank you for noticing the bare feet! You can't actually see that all my weight is on my hidden foot, which is shod. That part I think I got right, and it gives me a warm glow to see that someone noticed. It was actually the first thing I noticed. IMO being barefoot is actually more iconic for a Mistborn than the cloak, since only someone burning Pewter and Tin would ever even CONSIDER it.
Titan Arum Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Next photo shoot we'll do it at the National Cathedral. Kredik Shaw's remains were just conveniently located SiMon the Kandra wolfhound would've loved to explore at Kredic Shaw too, but he was too busy jumping across the roofs of DC in his dreams. Too bad your knife isn't as readily visible. Here's one shot of you with the knife in all of it's glory, but the tassels aren't as obvious: I also wish we had fog in DC. San Francisco would be a great place for a Mistborn photoshoot.
Oudeis he/him Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Definitely considering the photoshop possibilities. How hard can it possibly be to add mist swirling around me? And maybe some blue lines coming from my chest?
