Parshendi - are they actually allies?

Note: I've only read WoK once, & sadly don't have time to search the forums thoroughly - thanks for being kind if I'm off-base.

The Parshendi ARE the help that the Almighty sent (mentioned in one of Dalinar's visions). Their "armor" prevents the hive-mind control that normal Parshmen fall victim to.

- - The dark sphere (that Gavilar gave Szeth) does summon thunderclasts. The Parshendi gave it to Gavilar to keep it from their non-armored cousins during the coming Desolation.

- - But then why kill Gavilar? Maybe, as he interacted with him in the visions, the Almighty discovered that Gavilar was the "wrong" brother - from the descriptions of their personalities, he seems more over-aggressive whereas Dalinar seems more "Honor"-able, so to speak. So the Almighty chose the younger brother, and led (by visions?) the Parshendi to remove the elder one. This reminds me a little of the Jacob/Esau story in Jewish history.

My theories on the Parshmen/Parshendi:

1) The Parshendi are the Voidbringers of legend.  The Parshmen are proto/infant Voidbringers.  They have the potential to become Parshendi, but it requires something extra to make them so.  If this is the case, either both groups must be functionally immortal, or able to breed true among themselves.

2) Gavilar's Dark Sphere has the ability to 'wake up' Parshmen into Parshendi, and to 'upgrade' Parshendi to Thunderclasts.  He gave it to Szeth to keep it out of the hands of the Parshendi, trusting in the Shin sense of Honor.

3) Gavilar's murder was an attempt by the Parshendi to obtain the Sphere.  Szeth was not ordered to bring them the sphere in order to keep him from realizing how important it was, and there was another who was prepared to remove the sphere from Gavilar's remains.

Sorry guys, but that is way beyond even 'Epileptic trees' :P.

Parshendi being upgraded to thunderclasts? No in MY Brandon Sanderson book, that belongs to pulp fantasy. Bonus points if it is intentional trolling, though, I've fell for it.

On the other hand, there is one question that begs to be asked - the chasmfiends are related to thunderclasts. We witness multiple acts of them 'pupating'.

But does anyone actually witness, or is even remotely interested in what chasmfiend pupate INTO? It might be possible that into thunderclasts... but why we never witnessed one, after all - they've been pupating for a long time, some must evade the attention of parshmen (by the way, why they keep killing them? This is defintely something more to this, mush more) and pupate into... something. Defintely not parshendi tho, or they would try and protect the pupae, not destroy it :).

now THIS is a vein worth exploring! good call!

Yeah. We had a pretty extensive discussion on the topic. About all we have to go on was the color of their blood is the same, they are described as looking the same, and Pokemon is canon. I agree that Chasmfiends -> Thunderclasts is the most likely option at the moment, but we really can't prove it just yet.

and Pokemon is canon.

Parshmen -> Parshendi -> ??? -> Chasmfiends -> Thunderclasts -> ??? -> PROFIT!

Well, we know Chasmfiends evolve via Thunder Stone...

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

  • 3 weeks later...

For one I'd like to side with old aggie. I think it would be too obvious for the Parshendi to be the "antagonists". Moreover, they somehow seem too intelligent to be "THE Voidbringers" to me, I've always imagined them as savage. Although I must say that I believe that the Voidbringers are not the worst part to the story, it's... this is only the first book, you should know better than to conceive the whole story's already said.
