It's just used to reference the moment an Epic first receives their powers, goes briefly insane, and destroys/murders anyone and anything in their path. 1

I'm actually convinced that many similarities between the Cosmere and the Reckonersverse are nothing more than Easter eggs for Brandon's more die-hard fans. It could be that he intentionally used Rending in both Rithmatist and Reckoners to give fans of both a sort of "Aha!" moment. 1
