That….is a very disturbing thought.

I take solace in the fact that Regalia was only attractive through her water projections and Newton appeared to dress rather modestly. At any rate, there was nothing specifically pointing out a proclivity for cleavage-baring tops or short skirts, which I think would've been mentioned if it were important.

and she wasn't really attractive per sey- just not as old and frail as she actually was. She was "matronly" according to David, still appearing in her 50s or 60s.

Precisely. I think Kobold's theory is in play here--their appearances changed to match their perceptions of themselves. Regalia saw herself as a sort of always-right-all-the-time-always mother figure, and her appearance reflected that.

So Silver Dragon (please jump in if you see this) hasn't been online in almost a week.  In the interest of moving Corvallis forward, any thoughts on how we should proceed?  Last we spoke, it sounded to me like Silver was fine with the plan to have Converter imprisoned (again, correct me if you see this Silver), so perhaps we should assume that the attempt is successful and move on from there?  I would like to get things with this fight wrapped up so that the characters can move on.  It would also be nice to be ready to write Hypno's scene before Mailliw gets back from his hiatus.

What do you guys think?  And how much longer should I wait before moving forward?  I know a week isn't that long of a time, and Silver has claimed to be busy (because of school I'm guessing), so I'm fine with waiting too, as long as everyone else is.  It would just be nice to get an indication of what kind of time frame we are working with.

Well it'll probably be a while before the Dalles and Portland finish up for the night so I don't mind waiting so game days can all sync up more or less.

indeed, it was so ingrained into her personality that it was her weakness.

I'm cool with it. I don't think Converter could actually avoid the restraints for long anyway. And in a situation like this where he is 100% ok with her being imprisoned and such, then I think you can just go ahead. I also want things moving forward haha

Silver Dragon works at a scout camp so he's only back on the weekends.

That's just it, there still some more things to finish up in Corvallis before morning, so it would be nice to get going with them so that the transition to morning can be synced.  We can't finish until Mailliw gets back anyways, but it would be nice to be ready to move into that last scene with Rainmaker and Hypno as soon as possible.

I'll maybe give it a couple of days, just in case Silver has other ideas of how the restraining happens, or has second thoughts.

EDIT:

Gotchya! As someone who has worked with a camp schedule before I totally get it. I'll wait till next weekend and send a PM.

Just for fun, let's see how this theory would apply to WHIO if correct.

Doctor Funtimes is small of stature, extremely slim, and unquestionably cute. This could suggest how she's historically seen herself--as a small but innocent daughter under the thumb of a stormy mother. She doesn't see herself as a good empress so much as she sees herself as Tiny Tim, the adorable victim of circumstance.

Scribbler is much the same; she is exceptionally short for her age, and aside from her tattoos is quite plain in appearance. This reflects her feelings of powerlessness and weakness.

Quite to the contrary, Lucentia and Saccharine are both statuesque and majestic Epics, tall and regal in appearance. Lucentia sees herself as a sharp-witted but beautiful queen, and Saccharine seems to see herself as a scientific hero.

Timeport hasn't changed in appearance in the slightest, because he already saw himself as the perfect predator, already deserving of god-like powers. Unlike Steelheart, he saw no reason that he should have to change to reflect his new Epic status, and thus, didn't.

Granted, the theory doesn't really apply to Altermind or Lightwards. The former projects a constant illusion of himself to show what he feels he should actually look like, while he should already look like this projection if this theory is correct. And Lightwards sees himself as the glorious future Emperor of the Universe, and yet is an unattractive cross between Harry Potter and Indiana Jones.

Personally I'm only half-convinced that my theory holds water when applied to canon, and if it does it may be that only some Epics have their appearances or physiques changed. Still though, it's interesting to think about.

Of course, it could also be that only Epics who put a lot of stock in appearances had their physiques change demonstrably. Steelheart knew that looking like the toughest guy in the prison yard came down to looks first and actions second, so his appearance changed enormously (pun not intended, but I'm so not taking it out either). Newton may not have cared much about her appearance—or perhaps preferred people ignore her based on that—so it didn't change much.

So, in Salem, I think I'm going to introduce Mouldbreaker as an Epic who works for Soulcaster, if that's okay. I'll use Cutie Pie and Blasting Cap as NPC's and the perspective I'm writing from is an Epic named Desperado (who you'll understand pretty soon.)

Mouldbreakers abilities seem pretty good for dealing with larger groups which tends to be Soulcasters weak spot so that seems like it could work well.

I'll get started, then.

That's currently where I'm leaning with this theory.

As for skimpy clothing, I think that depends a lot on the individual Epic in question and how her corruption manifests. Funtimes wants to draw eyes to herself, but would rather people consider her to be fun than sexy. So she wears a bright pink glittery prom dress which, last I checked, didn't have holes cut out for her cleavage or navel.

On the other hand, she-Epics that want to shock or show off their attractiveness would lean towards the skimpier clothing, just like the wearers of some more outrageous pieces of clothing in the pre-Calamity world. Or there might be a few cases where clothing that isn't all-covering is practical for them, such as bikini-clad water Epics or speed Epics that run around in small tank tops to stay cool.

Epics are a varied bunch, so I imagine there are examples of pretty much any kind of behavior.

I'm guessing the effect on appearance is not as pronounced as it is for Returned. Slight changes are made perhaps, but people's overall age and body type remain the same.

For my epics, Euphoria's appearance hasn't really changed, which I think works with her character. If this theory is applied to Rainmaker, I imagine her hair is more silky and shiny, and she looks slightly younger than she would had she not become an epic. She likes to look camera pretty, since she was used to doing so when her husband was a politician.

If they're driven by fear, then that fear should factor into how they present themselves. Just as there would be women who would fear not being noticed, not being beautiful and not being sexy, there would be women who feared being seen as too sexy. And then there would be women whose fear had nothing whatsoever to do with sexiness and everything to do with something else, and that would reflect in the way they dressed. From what I'm gathering of the Reckonersverse, women whose fear drives them to become the prettiest, sexiest women on their respective continents are rare. Women whose fears might lead them to dress oddly or for pragmatic purposes seem to be far more common.

I feel like this is the sort of thing someone should ask Brandon at some point, but I'd feel awkward about being the one to bring it up.:P

Out of unrelated curiosity, does Funtimes sleep in her prom dress, or does she make herself a set of a whimsical pajamas every night?

Maybe out of curiosity, though I don't know how important it is to the Reckonersverse at large. We've already seen enough variations in dress from female Epics (the caped ninja look for Sourcefield, punk clothes for Newton, the sophisticated grandmother look for Regalia, everyday practical garb for Megan, and not a lot on Faultline except the fact she wore her hair in a bun) that it seems safe to assume Calamity isn't pressuring them to wear the skimpiest outfits they can find.

…which is ironic, considering his corruption leads them to do all sorts of other horrible things.

She doesn't sleep in it. (All of that fabric that makes her skirt poofy would get pretty scratchy if she wore it to bed. :P) She's fond of colorful pajamas with polka dots and whimsical animals on them—kittens, puppies, cuddly-looking panda bears, cartoonish turtles.

Here I thought her pajamas had a picture of nathans face with hers surrounded by a love heart :P

I think Calamity usually leaves his Epics alone to manifest their corruption in whatever ways are natural to them. Sometimes that means dressing to impress, sometimes that means mutating towns of vanillas into dread-legions of samurai pandamen. Epics are a diverse lot.

There are also probably Epics who deliberately dress to emphasize their powers. For instance, I could imagine shapeshifters who give themselves thinner figures and larger bust to show off what they can do. (Or making themselves look like attractive celebrities, like Taylor Swift.) And there are also probably Epics like Cricket, who wears her short shorts in all kinds of weather as a way of drawing attention to her one and only power.

...Though hopefully there aren't a lot of Epics like her, 'cuz on occasion she's murdered guys she caught staring at her thighs.

No, you're thinking of Fortuity's. Not a lot of people know that Fortuity had a secret crush on his server--don't tell anyone.

I'm having a dilemma.

Do I post this in the "Sharders' Quotes Out of Context" thread to show off how insane the Question threads can really be?

Or do I leave it here so as not to blind other Sharders with the glorious yet terrible light of our insanity?

Alas, with their lack of knowledge of the flighty Nathan, giving them this taste of insanity would be like casting pears before swine. :(

Is that a typo? Because I thought pigs liked pears…although the simile does fit because pears are delicious and can be rather expensive where I live, so it would be like giving them something amazing that they wouldn't appreciate….and now I want pear sauce. Dang. <_<

But you're right. The quote just isn't the same without knowing the story behind it.

It was supposed to be a humorous deconstruction of the typical saying, but I couldn't find a suitable word that rhymed with "swine" and I forgot to change "pears" back to "pearls." So... sort of a typo? :P
