TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Sparks. I forgot about that. How long do you think it'll take to get them through the Frequency fight and back on the road to Portland? Will Baxter have any time to recruit Backtrack before they leave? You could always write them on two separate timelines for now, and when we skip to morning in Portland, just write a few lines or paragraphs explaining when they returned and how Lightwards reacted.

Will Baxter have any time to recruit Backtrack before they leave? Judging from the fight in Astoria, me and Mailliw almost never being on at the same time will mean the fight is going to continue for a rather long time in real life, unless Freq's gang decides that it is already too late for much fighting and make an early retreat. Aso congratulations Twi
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Aso congratulations Twi Thanks!

Aso congratulations Twi Hmm, well if that's going to be the case I might need to skip MV and Backtrack past it somehow. Maybe Autumn could try to contact them because she heard Impact's voice? Then they could go back to Baxter, meet Arsenal and clear everything up, secure transport back and hopefully not have too much of a time disconnect.
Voidus Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Oh and also, Congrats Twi!I've recently discovered that unfortunately academic life is just not working for me right now so my degree is likely going to take significantly longer than I had planned until certain medical issues are fixed.

I can't remember if they took a radio with them. In any case, I can see them fleeing the fight altogether once lightning bolts start coming their way, potentially making their way to HQ in an attempt to sort things out. If they get there at the same time as Deathwish, maybe they could hear about Impact leaving the city from him.

Not entirely sure, they probably should have, Scribbler likely would have made her take something before she bolted out.
18th Shard he/him Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I had an idea for an Epic. I wanted an Epic who knew their weakness and used the fact that it was his weakness to his advantage, like if Superman used kryptonite to some advantage. So here it is: The Ghost Primary: Enhanced Physicality - More so in agility and speed than strength, though both are enhanced. Secondary: Enhanced Senses - think Tineye Passive: The more the Ghost uses his abilities, the less he interacts with the real world - smells and tastes fade away completely first, then sounds and tangibility, and finally visibility. All fade simultaneously, they just fade away at different rates, so they are gone completely in the above order. Weakness: Unsure - I want something that I can have two layers of interaction with (I was thinking maybe rattlesnake venom - seeing it nullifies passive, being injected with it nullifies his active abilities.) MO: Goes intangible, sneaks in, pulling out a hidden dagger and [venom?], therefore going tangible and kills someone. He has learned various assassin techniques. Affiliations: Corvallis, Government, perhaps?

It's an interesting idea, but judging by Sourcefield's reaction to her weakness, I doubt an Epic would be able to keep it together long enough to turn their weakness into an advantage. 1

Yeah, it's not like weaknesses are just random rocks that just so happen to hamper their ability. They downright scare the Epic in question or at the very least remind them of a bad trauma.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Yeah, it's not like weaknesses are just random rocks that just so happen to hamper their ability. They downright scare the Epic in question or at the very least remind them of a bad trauma. Think of it this way: every Epic has PTSD, which seems to have been made worse by Calamity, and their weakness is a trigger. The second he touches the rattlesnake venom, he'll have post-traumatic flashbacks, probably mixed with a panic attack, which would not only nullify his powers, but could very well lead to a full-fledged nervous breakdown.
Voidus Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Plus deliberately exposing yourself to you weakness is essentially confronting it, so they'd be an uncorrupted Epic.

Not neccesarily, it depends on the details. For example Fortuity surrounded himself with women and Newton had to deal with Obliteration and Regalia using her weakness to keep her in check. It'd be one think if he poisioned himself for kicks but if he's not using it on himself that shouldn't be exactly the same... if he could get past that PTSD

It'd be one think if he poisioned himself for kicks but if he's not using it on himself that shouldn't be exactly the same... if he could get past that PTSD That was just close to Fortuity's weakness, the speculation that it was rejection by women that would have fully negated his powers shows that if anything he was trying to prove that it wouldn't happen. Newton didn't have a choice, the whole point was that they were using her weakness to control her, if she'd actively told her gang to compliment her that would be closer but she did the opposite. So maybe the case could be made that it's similar to Fortuity but I don't know if I can see it working too well.

It'd be one think if he poisioned himself for kicks but if he's not using it on himself that shouldn't be exactly the same... if he could get past that PTSD Yeah, the women he surrounded himself with knew that "[he] didn't like it when [they] talked back to him," which kept them from even getting close to triggering his weakness; a single power was weakened, but the argument could be made that he was deliberately avoiding his weakness by the way he treated women. With Newton, I think it was more like someone who is deathly afraid of confrontation working in a job as a server in a busy restaurant—she isn't exactly dealing with her fear on a daily basis, but the people she works with are going to be blunt and will definitely bring any mistakes to her attention, so it's something close. But since she's more dealing with a milder form of it as a part of her work environment, she's more working around it than actively facing it.
18th Shard he/him Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) Valid points, all. I was thinking along the same lines as Edgedancer as far as the weakness. I looked at it like my baby brother's fear of dogs/cats: he's fine with them when they are far a few feet away, nervous but not really freaking out, but as soon as the dog gets closer he starts freaking out and crying. I felt that it was more of a gradient of fear - he has that trauma from the venom when he sees it, but he's able to sort of hold it together for a little while, but when it's injected, he completely freaks out and has a panic attack. If you guys don't think that it would work, I can change it. I still like the Ghost as an Epic, but I'd probably have to make him able to deliberately turn on/off his passive - maybe make it so he loses touch with reality the more he is in ghost mode? What do you think of his position in Corvallis? Edit: to clarify, being bit by a rattlesnake could be his actual weakness. Edited May 16, 2015 by 18th Shard

Well yes, but in the case pitched it was especially the case that he wasn't actually triggering his weakness. Only getting close to it. Still not something I think an Epic would do but not directly the same and we've seen that the process is more complicated as simply getting close to their weakness.

It'd probably just be easier to make him able to turn his ghosting on and off at will. What I'm picturing, so far as that weakness goes, is him holding the venom, thinking about the snake biting him, thinking about how easy it would be for someone to grab a syringe and take some out of the bottle; he knows it's irrational, but he's already thinking about it, and now that he's thinking about it, he can't stop…and in the time it took him to think about it, someone snuck up behind him with a gun.
18th Shard he/him Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 True. I think I'll make it so that the longer he goes ghost/ more intensely, the less mentally stable he gets. He has to take breaks in between jobs to bring him back down to sanity/stop hearing voices/etc. 1

He has to take breaks in between jobs to bring him back down to sanity/stop hearing voices/etc. That sounds more feasible—and also pretty cool. Kobold, what are the chances Arsenal made Autumn an iPod and an iHome so she can play music in her office? And Mailliw, Voidus, would Edgerunner and Scribbler ever want her to play music for them, and if so, what?
Voidus Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Music tastes is one thing I'm really terrible at for characters, I'm not particularly into music generally and when I am it's mostly scores from movies. So yes Scribbler probably would like it but I have no idea what kind of music she'd listen to.
Kobold King he/him Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Kobold, what are the chances Arsenal made Autumn an iPod and an iHome so she can play music in her office? And Mailliw, Voidus, would Edgerunner and Scribbler ever want her to play music for them, and if so, what? If she made a good argument about musical therapy or music's use in stress relief, he would. There's a precedent for it considering Glamour's belt full of iPods, but he'd only create "luxury items" if he were convinced of some practical application.

So yes Scribbler probably would like it but I have no idea what kind of music she'd listen to. Looks like an entire playlist of Tuvan throat singing it is. She strikes me as someone who'd like sort of quirky, soothing music, like The Hush Sound's gentler stuff, maybe? Or, given how Edgerunner's snarking can pull her out of her darker moods, she might also enjoy Weird Al.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Actually, upon further reflection, Edgerunner seems the more likely one to request two hours of Tuvan throat singing….so she can "borrow" Autumn's iPod and blare that playlist wherever Arsenal is likely to be. 1
