High prince of geeks he/him Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I have yet to figure out how spoiler tabs work on this website so i am saying now, Spoilers below. I am also sorry if I repeat anyone else's ideas So when rereading WOR I noticed that the year Shallen's mother died timed up pretty neatly with the assassination of Gavilar. From my thought is that Shallen;s Mother's friend worked with Gavilar and was actively trying to bring the desolation, when he saw Shallen and pattern he influenced the bond in hope of quickening the coming of the desolation. When Shallen's mother learned about the desolation part of the plan she did whatever she could to stop it, namely trying to remove the Radiant from the equation.
MitchBade he/him Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Hmmm maybe, but from Shallan's recollection her mother's friend was actively trying to help kill her. If I'm remembering correctly he subdued Shallan's father as her mother went in for the kill. If anything it is possible that her mother and the friend were working with the Skybreakers, a group we know has actively been killing protoradiants.

The Skybreakers would not illegally murder someone. They'll never hear the end of it from Nalan. 2
VladJunior Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 While they may not illegally murder someone, the mother may still have come across the Skybreakers. Why else would Shallan's brother seek them out, unless that tidbit was a ruse? There are several questions left unanswered here: Why did the Ghostbloods provide Davar with the soulcaster in the first place (which appears to have occurred after Shallan killed her mother)? Why did Helaran leave to seek out the Skybreakers even though he was involved with the Ghostbloods and appeared to be on an assassination assignment to kill Amaram, a man Mraize tells Shallan has been reserved for assassination by another (presumbly Iyital from the scene with the blowgun)? At the time Shallan killed her mother, Gavilar still lived. We know that the Ghostbloods, Sons of Honor, Skybreakers, and Shin were all concerned with the coming Desolation and protoradiants. Only the Skybreakers were actively seeking to kill them, however. And we only see that happen when Nalan is present, never without. Maybe there is a law that allows mothers to kill their children in Jah Keved?
Patrick Star Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Nalan's been around for 2000 years. Early on, he joined some courts and inserted some conditions into the kingdoms' laws like "All dark-skinned men with crescent marks on their face may kill surgebinders." In invisible ink, of course. 3
Aleksiel Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) I really don't see how exactly it's clear Shallan's mother knew about Gavilar. First, there's no reason to believe they've ever met, no textual evidence for that. There are plenty of secret organizations with knowledge about the Radiants. Second, we don't know what Gavilar wanted, only what Amaram said, which isn't fully reliable. Also, just because Gavilar and Shallan's mother were killed in the same year doesn't mean they were connected. There was no way to predict Shallan would kill her mother and the Parshendi have no connection with Jah Keved whatsoever so far as we know. How they came across Szeth is a huge question mark, but there's nothing to my knowledge that connects him with any group in Jah Keved. If Nalan is right and surgebinders bring Desolation, then Shallan's mother would have been part of a group that works against the Sons of honor - if not intentionally (since SoH probably weren't found yet), then by having opposite goals. Off topic and sort of nit-picking, but could you please change the title to ShallAn? You misspell her name in all your posts I've seen and it's bugging me. May be you've only listened to the audiobook and don't know the correct spelling. Edited April 30, 2015 by Aleksiel 2
MitchBade he/him Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Waaaaiit, depending on how long Taravangian had the diagram, it could be that Shallan's mother and her friend were working for him, and since a radiant could disrupt his plans for Jah Keved (like Kaladin stopping the assassination of Elhokar) he has her kill Shallan.
.S.A.M.K.M Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I think there is a conspiracy to raise the church to supremacy by bringing back the knights, what if there is a faction working to keep the knights away? An interchurch cold war over the knights.
DreamEternal Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 (edited) The Sons of Honor (Restares, Amaram and probably Gavilar) want to bring back the Church by starting the True Desolation, hoping the Heralds will also return. The new Skybreakers, led by Nin, wanted to prevent the desolation by killing radiants, but their plans may have changed now that it has already come. We don't know for sure what the Diagram thinks about the radiants, except that it says that their oaths can't be stoped and they should look for them, so it can be guessed that they see the radiants as an obstacle, but maybe it is just because they were using a truthless. The ghostbloods don't seem to be against radiants, but we know nothing about their goals. EDIT: damnation autocorrection set to portuguese. Edited May 5, 2015 by CognitivePulsePattern
Aleksiel Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Waaaaiit, depending on how long Taravangian had the diagram, it could be that Shallan's mother and her friend were working for him, and since a radiant could disrupt his plans for Jah Keved (like Kaladin stopping the assassination of Elhokar) he has her kill Shallan. Vargo went to the Nightwatcher after Gavilar told him about his visions on the feast Szeth killed him, which is around the same time Shallan's mother was killed. Thus the Diagram is afterwards and Shallan's mother couldn't be part of it. 1
