spencer12347 he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I'm nearly done with WoR and thought about starting the Dresden files for my next series. I heard that they are okay in the beginning but become amazing after book 3 or something. I was just wondering if this is a series that I should go into or if it is a waste of my time.
Topomouse he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Personally, I like the series a lot, and I would recommend it to anyone. I have actually started a re-read a while ago and I'm halfway through book 3. The first two books are more definitely rougher then the rest, but still good. I would say that if by the end of book 4 you are not hooked, you are probably never gonna be. 1
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 One of my all time favorite series. He indeed a bit rough in the first 4 books, but it's elantris rough. still a good read. I honestly consider his last few books to be better than most of brandon's.
Briar King Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Dresdencrack is awesome! Bks 1-2 are the worst by the majority of fans. That changes halfway through bk 3. Then bk 4 comes out the gates swinging HARD from pg1 and that continues through bk 15. So fun. Also if the idea of reading 15 bks gets to much to bear his Codex Alera 6 bks are the true treat. It's Pokemon mixed with a lost Roman Legion merged together. A fan challenged him to take 2 ideas and write a book out of it. The results are a gem. Butcher won the challenge imo.
aczh1 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I personally didn't enjoy the Dresden files. I read the first ~3, and they were very basically written - seemed like the books were targeted towards preteens. Very predictable plot, cliched humor, etc. But a lot of people seem to enjoy the books, so at least try reading the first few. They aren't very long.
Argent he/him Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 The first few are the most basic, if people give up on the series, they give up there. I personally loved everything about the series.
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I would almost recommend starting in book 5 and going from there, then read the first 4 after you know the series is good.
Briar King Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 No way! Lol. The 1st 3 are short books with big font. A slow reader can blow through them in 2 days and just knowing that the majority of fans say these books get better with each bk should be motivation enough to plow through small books.
Kaymyth she/her Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Chiming in on the Dresden Files Are Awesome side. You can definitely see how his writing style tightens up quite a bit after the first three; it's also worth noting that he wrote the first few before any of them were published. Like Brandon, he's done a lot of plotting and worldbuilding in the series. There's a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that Harry only gets glimpses of in the first many books. It's not until the last 2 or 3 most recent books that the "camera" has started panning out and you actually start to see what's really been going on.

And I still want to know what's up with the Jade Court.
Kaymyth she/her Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Like Bianca's Maquerade? And I still want to know what's up with the Jade Court. Heh. I was thinking more along the lines of the reasons for the existence of the Faerie Courts.
