Do you think it'd be kosher to copy and paste the excerpt into an Alan for those who can't get past the captcha? I'd be willing to do that, if it's okay.

Blaze said that the newsletter as a whole is meant to be kept exclusive to those who subscribe--but then, I CAN'T subscribe without contacting Brandon directly. <_<

Hurm. That's dumb. <_<

I'm going to subscribe as soon as I can, so it's not like he'd lose a subscriber. And my mother who's already signed up for the newsletter didn't even receive her copy.

What I'm saying is that my conscience would not twinge if I were to receive that excerpt in the meanwhile as I struggle with the buggy captcha software.

The newsletter itself is okay, but the exclusive excerpt isn't. Here's the last few lines of the newsletter following the end of the excerpt:

Calamity: coming in 2016.

Please do not post this excerpt anywhere online. Let’s keep it as a special bonus for newsletter subscribers.

This really sucks, considering it's his software that's broken.

I won't lie--I'm actually pretty ticked off about this. <_<

You said your mother is on the list? Sometimes the e-mail can get sent to the spam folder by accident (check your spam filters too to prevent it from happening in the future), on top of the possible lag time that might delay the e-mail's arrival to her mailbox. If she still doesn't have it by the weekend then perhaps she isn't actually subscribed? Again, sending them an e-mail explaining the situation will no doubt result in them sending you the Newsletter. :)

It's resolved. My mom managed to get it and forwarded it to me, and I managed to get the captcha working when using another computer. So I'm subscribed now.

Thanks for the help. It still would have been a lot simpler if those pointless non-sharing rules weren't in place. <_<

Good ethical discussion team! I think it's important to remember that how readers respond to instructions from authors affects trust. If Brandon wants a limited rather than a wide release of preview material, and he can't trust newsletter recipients to follow instructions, he likely won't use the newsletter to publish such previews. Glad to see everyone respecting his wishes, even if we might not agree. I'm not signed up for the newsletter. *Perks up. Why am I not subscribed to the Newletter. *trundles off to struggle with Captchha.

I have no problem respecting his wishes--the fact he's so reasonable about everything else makes me want to respect them all the more. If an author is so cool with fanfic that he has a section for it on his website, in an environment where some authors throw a hissy fit at the merest suggestion of it, then it goes to show he respects his fans. The least we can do is respect his in return.

* grumbles about the limited-edition Epic profiles in the back of Mitosis I never had access to *

I love Brandon Sanderson, but I flat-out despise his limited release policies. It might garner a bit of publicity in some avenues, but it alienates the countless fans he has that never get a chance to access the material. We can't even count on our friends to supply us with second-hand information because he puts lockdowns on the new content.

Ugh. I respect his wishes--grudgingly--but I strongly disagree with them, and I think they ultimately do more harm than good.

Thanks for offering to share the excerpt, Twi. You're a good friend, regardless of the red tape that ties your hands. <_<

I can relate Kobold! Saskatoon isn't exactly hopping with opportunities to travel to cons and get bonus content (grumbles about having to wait for hardcover of Perfect State) :(. I'd rather some people have access then none though!

Rule 24 of the Oregon RP: If it is mentioned in the RP, it will be subject to worldbuilding and possibly added to the game later on. See: Connell, WA. ;)

That's actually a bit backwards. :P I needed a place for the Destructors so I added it to the game and then it was referenced. ;)

Neither am I but I don't like reading chapters and the like before publication anyway.

In case anyone here spoils, I'll... not be happy.

I'll just say that one of you guys here(Kobold or Voidus I think, but I'm not sure) nailed the setting of the beginning of the book. I'm impressed.

Meh, potato tomato. :P

I'd actually forgotten about that, but it's seriously impressive.

I'm trying to think of a completely spoiler-free way of saying I didn't actually predict anything, I just quoted an obscure WoB.

And, uh... sorry for kind of losing my cool above. I'm feeling pretty crappy today, in part because of insomnia and the sweltering heat I'm suffering in right now, so the fear of being left behind during another one of these limited releases unlocked a bit of rage. I was actually going to come back and hide the post, but then Comatose replied to it so it would have looked kind of weird... so, anyway, sorry.

Totally fine. I know how it feels, being left out of the limited release stuff (first three chapters of Firefight only released at SDCC, anyone? <_<) so I can relate.

Also, was Backtrack going to melt into a little puddle of tears soon? :P

The part that really got me was the prohibition against sharing the file. That was what allowed me to hop aboard this emotional roller coaster:

  • Initial panic at not having subscribed to the newsletter
  • >Hope when I realize there's still time to subscribe
  • >Frustration and sadness when the captcha fails
  • >Immense gratitude and relief when friend offers to share the excerpt
  • >Crushing disappointment and surging anger when senseless rules prohibit you friend from acting on kindness.

Ugh. This is all getting very First World Problems-y, so I'll try to just let it go now. It was just an unnecessary frustration added to an already crappy day. <_<

I'll try to get a Backtrack post up soon.

I got the first three in my e-copy of Mitiosis. Not sure why.

I would have been very tempted to downvote you for this a few hours ago, just so you know. :P

You should really do that sometime tonight.

I'll try. Like I said, I'm really not feeling right today. Is there a particular "due by" rush I need to be concerned with, or is it just the average example of me holding everybody up?

Nothing so drastic. Just the friendly forum ninja, asking you to post for Backtrack because reasons.

Ah. Like I said, I'll see what I can do. Sorry.
