So, their horns grew because of it, and their magic is tied to that as well? Does this mean that other "mythical" beasts exist as well, Dragons merely dinosaurs that evolved to be more akin to their bird ancestors? Their fire a product of the magically tied abilities? Zathoth Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Spoiler In the top floor of a dark twisted tower outside of space sits The Nightmare Weaver. She is pale, thin, tall and spider-like with long, thick, hair. Hair so dark the light does not dare to touch it in the first place. Hair that is nightmares and horror and the grotesque. Hair She spends all time weaving and threading and sewing and embroidering. On the walls hang banners and evening gowns, embroideries and teddy bears. All black, but still in the blackness you can see colors, oh yes, colors. There is the red of burnt ashes, the green of deep, dark woods, the forgotten blues of the night-sky. Her hair, her threads hold all the colors of darkness. More so than colors you see images, horrible, violent images, images of crawling creatures and of monsters, but also of silent dread, of personal fears and nightmares of surreal and obscure kinds of hell. Here and there in her tower She has stretched her hair between the walls, as to mimic a strange harp. As She plucks Her hairs the haunting sounds and melodies She makes are reminiscent of screams, of the wailing wind, of footsteps in an empty house and of whispers in the dark from an unknown source. And if you would touch it, not saying that you will, but if you would, then you would feel the chilling terror wriggle and writhe and pulse inside those hairs. But for some, like moths drawn to a flame... for those, for the intrepid, the arrogant and the foolish there is a special fate. From Her ceiling hang innumerable cocoons, cocoons which hold things that used to be alive, but are now undergoing an agonizing metamorphosis into marionettes who will all be serving Her, puppeteered by Her hair. The Nightmaress She weaves, and She weaves eternal. I am probably going somewhere with that. 20 minutes ago, Quiver said: I admit, tempted to somehow include hippogriffs... But no. Quiver he/him Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) Random idea that occured to me last night. I'm not much of a sci-fi guy, but I've watched enough to understand the kind of fears associated with roboticisation. It helps that I grew up in the 90's, when the Borg were one of the most terrifying things and even I -someone who never watched (and don't especially like)- TNG knew what their deal was. Of course, Star Trek always ends with assimilated crew members going back to normal (er... spoilers?). But that got me thinking: how terrifying must it be to actually have those robot parts replaced with human ones? Edited October 4, 2016 by Quiver 1

They go around space finding artificially intelligent robot races and "saving" them by uploading their consciousnesses into cloned organic bodies.

I actually remember an episode of the 80's Transformers show which had that concept, sort of. An old version of Cobra Commander downloaded a bunch of Autobots into human bodies so he could use their robot forms for...something. Evil, presumably. But...you know, I did have a sci-fi idea floating around in my head, a spaceship crewed entirely by A.I. which served as the last proof of human existence, long after Earth was destroyed. That might work for this; an alien species decides to resurrect the Human race by downloading their old computer programs into cloned bodies... 2
Zathoth Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 So I was asking myself how Twilight would actually turn out if it wasnt stupid. So you have a predator that feeds on humans seduce their prey... well, that was easy, its also really boring. Then I remembered the caterpillars of the oakblue butterfly, you know the caterpillar that gives off a sugary secretion that turn ants into drugged zombie slaves. Then I wondered what that would be like if a person had addictive, mind controlling blood. So you get a person (well, something that looks like a human, anyway), with an army of vampires. Someone needs to call Harry Dresden...

IT WOULD WORK SO WELL WITH THIS IDEA!! IMMA EXCITED THINKING ABOUT IT. Oh wait. Most of you probably don't know what the Immortality Drive is. Ok. So the Drive is just that, a large memory device that was taken to the ISS (International Space Station) in a Soyuz spacecraft on October the 12th, 2008. Two days from now is it's anniversary, Anway, the important thing is what the drive contains.....The Immortality Drive contains fully digitized DNA sequences of a select group of humans. Including, physicist Stephen Hawkings, comedian Stephen Colbert, Playboy model Jo Garcia, game designer Richard Garriott, fantasy authors Tracy Hickman and Laura Hickman, pro wrestler Matt Morgan, and athlete Lance Armstrong. It also contains a copy of Georges Secret Key to the Universe. Stephen (Hawkings) and his daughter's book. So it was made to be like a "time capsule" in case a cataclysmic event happened on Earth, to give a remnant of humanity, in the hope of some beings in the universe to restore the human race. I learnt of it from watching a doco called "Life after People" I reckon you guys should watch it, it's pretty damnation awesome.
Kobold King he/him Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 "All anyone really needs to know about the planet Ixion is that it was named for a mythical character who was strapped eternally to the sun for his sins. It was used as a penal colony until that was declared cruel and unusual punishment, it was chartered for a research expedition until scientists realized they'd actually have to go there, and it was a battleground during the Human-Supernalian War until both sides sat down and admitted they didn't actually want it. The kindest thing you can say about it is that in an infinite universe it's not technically the worst place to live." 4
Zathoth Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Skyverea now has giant invisible snakes that turn into invisible raptors with four arms that turn into invisible stegosaurus/triceratops things that turn into invisible T-Rexes, but with usable arms. And they have a culture somewhat like ancient china. Is this weird enough? Do I need to make it weirder? How can I make it weirder? I feel like that last sentence is my creative mantra "How can I make this weirder?" 2
Eagle of the Forest Path he/him Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 My personal mantra is "nearly everything can be improved by the addition of bacon." So you could have your invisible reptiles smell like bacon, that's pretty weird, right? 1
Darkness Ascendant he/him Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 @Zathoth, give them beards that are visible. So they look like floating beards. And you can tell whether it's a snake, raptor, stegasaurus/triceratops thing and T-rexAnd make the raptor a Composagnathus, and the T-rex a Giganotosaurus. 1

They are a bit too comical, I do like them having a specific scent though, even if it is not bacon... I want the toe claw for my raptor things though. Yes, I know it wasnt actually used for hunting, I dont care.

ScarletSabre he/him Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 My current thoughts today are how to change the world of my current idea so it's not so blatantly inspired by/ripping off Dark Souls... I'm stuck on the whole souls thing. I don't want them to be dropped by people upon death as they are in the games, but I DO kind of want to use the idea that having vast amounts of them changes you physically, mentally and emotionally, increasing your power even as it warps you.

Haven't played Dark Souls. But, if you want to play with the idea of how accumulating souls would change a person (and working with no game knowledge)... Urgh. I can't think of any clear way to phrase what I'm trying to say. But,. if a soul is a person (presumably it is), then that would mean that having lots of souls would be like having lots of different persons within you, right? If they are all souls coming from different people, then picking up huge amounts of them could be... well, physcoholigcxally troubling. Because you'd have dozens and dozens of people, all with different wants and needs and reactions to things. If you can't turn that off, then I figure that would be... Disturbing. And a good way to keep characters around as mental dialogues after your main character offs them. Sure, Main Character might have killed and consumed Big Bad Evil Guy, but now BBEG is whispering in his head all the time, and MC finds himself wanting to do the stuff BBEG did... (Also, maybe the concept of a sin-eater would be of relevance for research?) 1

(Also, maybe the concept of a sin-eater would be of relevance for research?) I actually had an idea for something similar, a title/place called The Bastille of Souls, where condemned criminals are sent to rot and never be heard from again... But inside the labyrinth we'd find the real Bastille is several people who absorb the souls of those they imprison, taking over their bodies to refresh themselves when their current vessel is on the verge of death/uselessness. The act would be forcing their soul into the body of another, absorbing and subjagating the soul of the current occupant, and then living with them, their desires, their wants, their efforts to be free, trying to overtake you and get control of the body again... even if it's no longer their own. The souls would stick and merge together, fighting for dominance almost constantly until one was finally, eventually, extinguished.
ScarletSabre he/him Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 My current idea for today literally popped into my head like five minutes ago.... naming a weapon, a sword in a fantasy setting, or a superweapon of some kind in a more modern one, "Starvation", just so a character can say someone was killed by starvation when they've been stabbed. I know this has almost CERTAINLY been done before, but it amuses me. And I just had another idea based on what my co-worker just said, which was (Very British language ahead) "I can't stand the thought of heaven. All those hundreds of thousands of people who've died before ya. Imagine how chokka it would be!" which made me laugh at the thought of an overpopulated/overcrowded heaven XD
Quiver he/him Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 So... I could kind of use some feedback on a character concept. I've been batting around an idea of a society based on musical magic. Not the most original of ideas, but I'm not an original guy. Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to do some short stories, since I'm still batting around setting ideas; figure it out that way. One of those ideas was... I was thinking it might be interesting to do a cliché idea; female rogue. Think Vin, I guess. The...twist, I suppose is the best word, is that I was thinking of making her deaf. Which is where I'm running into some trouble. I'm tying to do some research into deafness, and Deaf Culture, but I admit, I'm finding it hard to work out how to translate that onto the page. My typical stuff defaults to a lot of dialogue to keep things going...which obviously wouldn't be an option in this case. Advice? 1
