What is an RPG and How Does It Work?

Think of it this way: We get a plot set, but instead of an author controlling the characters, individual people control their own characters, which leads to diversity and some fun and unexpected twists in the story. We've been given the setting and the plot, and now we get to create and control characters in the story, interecting with others and pretty much ad libbing our own little Mistborn story.

In rediculous terms, an RP is an online text-based role playing game, a role-playing game played online using a solely text-and-picture-based interface.

EDIT: By the way, welcome in advance. New members are always nice.

I guess sort of a small topic change (Don't really want to make a new topic when I have such a similar one here), but I was thinking of starting a pseudo-RP on this site (It's...different), but I've noticed that all the current RPs have their own subforums: are there any specific unspoken rules or things like that I need to know about before I attempt to start one?

Oh, and welcome BTW.

well, all the subforum ones started in the general area, so you can start one without needing to ask. The problem is getting active players. ;)

That's good. I guess I'm ready to post then. It's not as much a true RP as it is a game/RP combo. It's kinda weird.

Hey Iredomi!

Sorry it took me so long to see this. I tend to get caught up on MBI, and forget to make my way over to the mother site.

What Observer has told you is correct. MBI is essentially a collaborative work of fiction, set in the world of the Final Empire that Brandon has created. Like Observer said, each player/author is responsible for the actions of their own characters, as they react and respond to the various other characters and NPC's who exist in the world.

Unlike other RPG's, MBI doesn't have a mod playing all the Non-Player-Characters and telling you what happens next. Instead, that is all determined by YOU, the writer. The only thing that is off limits really are other players characters, which are their own to control. This free range low restriction environment is the reason why we have a fairly extensive application process, to makes sure players understand the rules and regulations of the site before they are allowed into the story.

So, if you are interested in joining (:)), the standard process is:

1. Reading the rules and style guide and other documentation (which, according to your initial post you may have done already).

2. Fill in a character application.

3. Create a character account and post said character application (either in the workshop for player feedback, or in the player characters section to apply for acceptance).

4. Wait for Admin feedback, and then once your are accepted, start writing!

Some of our threads are pre-planned out, others are not. The pre-planning often happens over instant messenger or skype, so if you are interested in collaboration of that kind, feel free to PM the players of the characters you are interested in collaborating with your information. If you plan on making more than one character, you should make a different account for each character, with an out of character account used to message other players, and to make out-of-character posts. Once your character is accepted, you can also feel free to just start a thread of your own, or enter any existing thread that is marked "open" to all, or to a character of your type (ie: noble, skaa, rebel, ministry, etc). If you see a thread you think your character could contribute to, that is not open, feel free to pm the player who started it. It never hurts to check. Just keep in mind that any topics that are locked are closed, meaning the scene in question is finished, so you will not be able to post there.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! I'll try to check here more often!

And Zenith, your game is fine where it is. Based on its set up, I don't think a sub forum will be needed, and your single thread should suffice. Feel free to ask players to designate what is out of or in character if things get confusing, or to divide your game into OOC and in character threads. It looks cool, so I wish you luck in finding players.

Comatose summed it up very nicely, and I don't really have anything much to add except that there's a lot to read on MBI, so don't get discouraged if it feels a little overwhelming. Feel free to IM/PM any of the MBI admins - Comatose, Chaos, or me - if you have any questions, or you can join the #MistbornRPG chatroom on IRC and see if anyone is there to help. Sometimes actually talking to someone about it is a lot easier than reading a seemingly endless list of threads.

As for getting a subforum, we've been working on some documentation for that process, but it tends to get pushed to the back burner as more pressing things come up. Right now, the process works like this:

  • An interested party - the creator - gets an idea for an RP and posts it here in the RP forum.
  • Other interested parties - the potential players - post in the thread and get involved.
  • The creator of the RP and his/her players begin sorting out details of the game, and either getting ready to start playing or diving right in to the action.
  • If there are enough players/interested people/etc and enough activity going on - development, actual RPing, whatever - the admins will contact the creator of the RP and offer him or her a subforum. We then ask for specific information, like what they want their subforum description to say.
  • If the offer is accepted, the new subforum is created and the creator of the RP is given limited moderator powers on that subforum.

We're currently working on an application process for people hoping to get their own forum so they don't have to wait on being contacted, but it's not quite ready yet.
