My question:

A group of disruptive elements are detained by a representative of the establishment.

The Mod Squad.

Elements of society, so, yes, people.

Are we talking people, or ponies?

As in, the elements of harmony and Princess Twilight Sparkle.

One day I will watch My Little Pony to see what all the hype is about.

That day will be the day after I suffer a traumatic brain injury.  -_-

They're actual human people, Quiver.

Power Rangers. Teenagers with attitude are very disruptive   :P

Yes, they are, but it's not the Power Rangers (or TMNT).

Next hint:

The disruptive elements (which are human people) use the time of their detainment to explore the boundaries and prejudices of their respective social groups.

The Breakfast Club!

Apparently at one of John Hughes's friends' high school, Breakfast Club was the nickname for morning detention.

A woman takes a bag and some other stuff and goes on a road trip.

The bag grunts a lot and is an excellent rifle stand.

(to those who have no idea, this is just getting sillier and sillier)

This is another one of your obscure films that only three dozen people on the planet have actually seen, isn't it?

No, you're all going to slap your foreheads once you figure it out.

Whether you have two hands or not...

Edit:  Perhaps this will help.

It was nominated for Best Picture this year.

I am really annoying ThirdGen via work IM by continuing to be completely confused.

...and the mystery is revealed.  He thought I'd seen a movie that I actually haven't yet.
