Xaladin he/him Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 The obvious reason for posting "bad idea" theories is to promote "good ideas." Maybe this crazy theory will trigger someone smart to make a better guess. We already know the Listeners can change their forms. Aimians are another "non-human" race on Roshar. We know Aimians can change their appearance (Axies' tattoos) at will and have other weird properties (shadow facing wrong way, etc.). Larkins come from Aimia. What was one doing way up in the Reshi Isles? And we know Axies was captive there. Perhaps there are more clues which stem from Vstim knowing when it was the right time to make a trade with the Reshi, and Rysn got something even better. Perhaps the original trade agreement would have involved taking Axies in his humanoid form as a slave, and getting him in Larkin form was an unexpected surprise? 5
Saucy she/her Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Speaking my thoughts about this. If Amians can really transform into Larkins, perhaps they would need some sort of change in weather or enviroment, as the Listeners needed Highstorms to change form, though I'm not completely sure. Reshi was probably a huge change in enviroment from Aimia though, so maybe he was able to change on will? Perhaps Vstim wasn't aware of Axies' presence in Reshi, and was simply coming for the Larkin corpse? As I think it is stated in the book, the Larkin was given to Rysn by the island itself, which if your statement is true, the Greatshell has some power in the Cognitive relm (or perhaphs it is actauly a spren, or being inhabited by a spren, this also leads to the question of if greatshell have at least some intelligence, or if thought is only given to these Huge greatshells. The Reshi believe these are their Gods, if that information is actually true, then I would assume that yes, they have thought.) If the Greatshell doesn't have power over the Cognitive realm though, this might suggest Axies' changed into a Larkin to escape and simply was hoping they would assume the excuse of the Greatshell giving a gift to Rysn. Ah this is all so confusing.
Curiosity he/him Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Facts known (and speculated) about Aimians and larkins and ramifications flowing from this theory: Larkins can possibly suck the Investiture from people? (cf. WoR, I-9, pp 1227 in Apple e-book)According to the theory, then Aimians may have proto-Investiture robbing abilities as well. Aimians, with their shape changing ability (reminiscent of Returned and their Cognitively determined appearance) and backwards-pointing shadows, are most likely more connected to the Cognitive Realm. I personally think that Larkins are more connected to the Spiritual, since Stormlight probably nestles in the broken SpiritWeb of proto-Radiants. Perhaps Vstim wasn't aware of Axies' presence in Reshi, and was simply coming for the Larkin corpse? I'm pretty sure that some sort of gravityspren bond with greatshells to allow them to grow to such magnificent sizes, so Cognitive influence is possible. (See "smoky" looking spren around the chasmfiend in WoK, ch13 IIRC.) 1
Xaladin he/him Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 Probably the thing that makes the least sense about this theory is that Larkins are clearly smaller than Aimians. Why would someone metamorphose into something smaller? I just can't help but think Axies was involved somehow, but I am out of ideas.

No way that's an Aimian! . . .is what they all want you to think I'm not too keen on it yet myself but I couldn't resist.
